Abstract

This article aims to examine the general patterns of language variation as a prominent sociolinguistic phenomenon in multilingual societies. Language variation reflects the social, cultural, and identity dynamics of its speakers. The fact that even speakers who share the same mother tongue use different linguistic forms demonstrates how complex and systematic this phenomenon is. Utilizing a descriptive-qualitative approach and a literature review method, this study identifies six main patterns of language variation: (1) speaker-based variation (idiolect, dialect, and sociolect); (2) situational variation (formal and informal registers); (3) geographical variation; (4) age-based variation (chronolect); (5) variation based on communication media; and (6) variation based on group identity. The results of the study show that language variation is not merely a deviation from the norm, but rather an adaptive strategy used by speakers in response to various social contexts. These findings align with the perspective developed by researchers at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, who emphasize the role of language as a marker of social and cultural identity.

Abstract

Language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a medium of expression that embodies aesthetic and rhetorical values. In linguistic studies, variations in language use related to modes of expression are examined within the field of stylistics, which in the Arabic linguistic tradition is known as al-uslubiyyah. This study aims to explore the theoretical concept of al-uslubiyyah, the stylistic elements within the Arabic linguistic tradition, its historical development, and its role in the analysis of the Arabic language. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The findings reveal that al-uslubiyyah is a field of study that analyzes language style through various linguistic dimensions, including phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and rhetorical aspects, while also taking into account the context of communication in language use. Furthermore, the development of al-uslubiyyah demonstrates a continuity between the classical tradition of balaghah (Arabic rhetoric) and modern linguistic approaches. Stylistic studies also play a significant role in understanding the characteristics of language style in literary works, religious texts, and academic discourse in Arabic. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that al-uslubiyyah constitutes a comprehensive approach to Arabic language analysis, as it integrates linguistic, aesthetic, and communicative dimensions, thereby contributing significantly to a deeper understanding of the meaning, function, and beauty of the Arabic language.

Abstract

This study discusses the communicative paradigm in Arabic language learning as an approach that emphasizes the use of language for real communicative purposes. The main focus is speaking skills or maharah al-kalam, namely the ability to convey ideas orally with precision, fluency, and contextual appropriateness. The communicative paradigm is considered relevant because it encourages learners to actively use Arabic through dialogue, question and answer, simulation, and meaningful interaction activities. This study uses a library research approach by examining the basic concepts of maharah al-kalam and the application of the communicative approach in Arabic language learning. The results show that the communicative paradigm can improve students' courage, fluency, active vocabulary, and speech accuracy in speaking Arabic.
