Abstract

Adolescence is a transition phase from childhood to adulthood often accompanied by changes in intense activity patterns and psychological instability. Hypertension currently affects not only the elderly but also younger age groups with significant prevalence due to poor lifestyle choices. Lifestyle plays a crucial role as a major factor contributing to the risk of early hypertension, including unhealthy diets, low physical activity, irregular sleep patterns, and smoking behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between adolescent lifestyle and the risk of early hypertension in class X students aged 15-17 years at SMAN 4 Banjarmasin. This research method uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study was 98 people using purposive sampling technique to obtain a sample of 79 respondents. Data collection used lifestyle questionnaires and observation sheets for blood pressure measurement. Based on the Spearman Rho correlation test, the results obtained p value (0.001) < α (0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.432, so it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship with moderate strength between adolescent lifestyle and the risk of early hypertension in class X students aged 15-17 years at SMAN 4 Banjarmasin. The worse the adolescent's lifestyle, the higher the risk of early hypertension. Suggestions for the school to increase promotive and preventive efforts through periodic blood pressure checks and healthy lifestyle education for students.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that can lead to serious complications, one of which is diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Inadequate foot care increases the risk of ulcer development; therefore, its association needs to be examined scientifically. This study aimed to analyze the association between foot care and the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers in patients with diabetes mellitus. A correlational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The sample consisted of 60 patients with diabetes mellitus selected using purposive sampling. Foot care data were collected using the Nottingham Assessment of Functional Footcare (NAFF) questionnaire, while the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers was assessed through an observation checklist. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation test. The results demonstrated a statistically significant association between foot care and the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers (p = 0.008 < α = 0.05). Patients with poor foot care tended to experience diabetic foot ulcers with greater severity. In conclusion, appropriate foot care plays an important role in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. Therefore, health education and the establishment of routine foot care practices should be strengthened to reduce the risk of complications and improve the quality of life of patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases with a high prevalence among the elderly in Indonesia. Efforts to control blood pressure through the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet therapy are essential; however, various factors are believed to influence its effectiveness at the primary healthcare level. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with DASH diet therapy in blood pressure control among the elderly at the Cempaka Public Health Center, Banjarmasin. This study employed a cross-sectional design with a sample of 188 elderly patients with hypertension selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering age, sex, educational level, and dietary adherence, as well as data on the frequency of healthcare visits obtained from patients’ medical records. Blood pressure measurements were conducted after the implementation of the DASH diet for 30 days. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed significant associations between age (p = 0.000), sex (p = 0.000), educational level (p = 0.000), dietary adherence (p = 0.000), and frequency of healthcare visits (p = 0.000) with DASH diet therapy in blood pressure control. Age, sex, educational level, dietary adherence, and frequency of healthcare visits significantly influenced the success of DASH diet therapy.

Abstract

The Dayak Meratus tribe commonly practices traditional medicine that focuses on prevention and first aid for childbirth, injuries, and various illnesses. In treating lacerations, they use locally available materials such as ground coffee, amoxicillin powder, banana shoot leaves, and other plants. The practice poses a risk of infection due to poor hygiene and contaminated tools. The research aimed to explore and describe the lived experiences and meanings that Dayak Meratus tribes attribute to providing first aid for lacerations. This was a qualitative phenomenological study conducted with 25 Dayak Meratus community members with experience in traditional laceration treatment, selected through purposive sampling. The lived experiences of participants were captured through in-depth interviews and were analyzed thematically using Colaizzi's method. Four key themes emerged: (1) types of raw materials used to stop bleeding, (2) first aid practices for lacerations, (3) culturally influenced health-seeking behavior, and (4) wound healing duration. Overall, the Dayak Meratus tribe's traditional wound-care practices are diverse and locally resourceful. However, several practices appear to lack standardized, evidence-based guidance and may raise concerns regarding hygiene and safety. The study found that although some practices appeared effective, they were undermined by the lack of aseptic procedures. The study recommends improving the health education practice by integrating traditional culture and wisdom with modern medical safety standards.
