Abstract

The length-weight relationship of fish and the condition factor provides an overview of the fish growth conditions in the river. The purpose of this study was to determine the length-weight relationship and factor condition of five fish species in the Suwi River wetlands. The method of catching fish used gill nets, ceiling nets, fishing rods, traps, and other nets. The research was conducted for to months in the Suwi river wetlands. The results the length-weight relationship of five fish were varied, Ompok bimaculatus had b value 2,93, Helostoma temminckii (b  value 2.15), Mystus nemurus  (b value 2,62), and Channa) micropeltes (b 2.61) which indicated a negative allometric growth pattern. Meanwhile Leptobarbus hoevenii (b 3.12) was a positive allometric growth pattern. Negative allometric indicates growth in length faster than weight growth, thus the physical shape looks flattened, while positive allometric indicates growth in fish length slower than growth in fish weight. Based on the relative weight (Wr) of Ompok bimaculatus 101.28 ± 19.13, Helostoma temminckii 101.05 ± 15.51, Mystus nemurus 100.95 ± 14.84, Channa micropeltes 101.09 ± 14.14, Leptobarbus hoevenii 103.71 ± 34.57. Condition factor above 100, indicates sufficient food availability or low predator density

Abstract

Catfish sangkuriang(Clarias gariepinus)is one of the aquaculture commodities with great potential to be developed in Indonesia to support the demand for feed. Efforts to reduce dependence on imported feed raw materials for fish feed is continued. Water hyacinth(Eichhornia crasspies)leaf which contains phytochemical compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, steroids and saponins is an alternatif raw material for fish pellet component. This study aimed to determine the addition of fermented water hyacinthleaf meal in fish feed on the growth, survival rate, and blood profile of sangkuriang catfish. In total 150 fish (Average initial weight 5.45 0.02 g)were randomly divided into triplicates of five groups, containing 10 fishes per group. Group one is a control group, P1 (10% of non fermented water hyacinth leaf meal), while P2, P3 and P4were treatment groups of fish fed with 10 , 15, and 20% fermented water hyacinth leaf meal byAspergillus niger. At the end of the 42 days of treatment, growth, survival rate, and blood profile of all fish were determined. The results showed that the addition of 10% water hyacinth leaf meal fermented byAspergillus nigerhad an effect on the growth of final weight, body weight gain and spesific growth rate (p 0.05) in comparison to all groups. However, the addition of any concentration of water hyacinth leaf meal did not affect on the feed conversion ratio and survival rate value. Further, the addition of water hyacinth leaf meal had a significant effect (p 0.05) on the erythrocytes, leukocytes and hemoglobin of fish, but did not show a significant effect on the values of hematocrit and platelets.

Abstract

This research examined the effect of nutritional supplementation of 5% chitosan and nano-chitosan sourced from black soldier fly larvae exuviae on the growth and physiological profile of Clarias gariepinus (initial weight: 2.054 ± 0.02 g) over a period of 30 days. The feed treatments consisted of chitosan-supplemented, nano-chitosan-supplemented, and control feed, arranged in triplicate. In each trial unit, 30 fish were reared in plastic tanks (60 L capacity, filled with 50 L of freshwater). Growth, hematological profiles, and antioxidant activities were assessed after 30 days. The findings indicated that nano-chitosan markedly improved growth performance, as shown by increased final weight, body weight gain (BWG), and feed efficiency (FE), in comparison to chitosan and control diets. Specifically, nano-chitosan-fed fish exhibited a final weight of 2.878 ± 0.16 g ind-1 and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.376 ± 0.15, outperforming the chitosan group (2.660 ± 0.12 g ind-1; 1.267 ± 0.12) and the control group (2.344 ± 0.04 g ind-1; 1.857 ± 0.05). Additionally, nano-chitosan significantly increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, including those of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), while reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, indicating reduced oxidative stress. The hematologicalprofile remained stable across the groups, confirming the safety of these feed additives. This research emphasizes nano-chitosan as a viable sustainable food additive for improving growth rate and oxidative resistance in C. gariepinus.

Abstract

Diabetes is a health problem that affects more than half a billion people in the world. Several plants are known to have anti-diabetic activity, one of which is Dutch jasmine (Combretum indicum). This research was conducted to determine the effect of Combretum indicum leaf extract on blood sugar levels and histology of islets of Langerhans in mice. A total of 36 male mice aged 6-8 weeks were divided into 6 treatment groups, namely normal control (KN) without treatment; negative control (K) with alloxan treatment; positive control (K+) with alloxan and glibenclamide treatment; P1 treated with alloxan and Combretum indicum leaf extract at a dose of 100 mg/kgBW; P2 with treatment with alloxan and Combretum indicum leaf extract at a dose of 200 mg/kgBW; P3 with alloxan treatment and Combretum indicum leaf extract at a dose of 200 mg/kgBW. Mice that have been induced by alloxan will be treated with leaf extract and glibenclamide for 20 days. Blood sugar levels 3 days after alloxan induction were checked and checked again on the 10th and 20th days of treatment by taking blood through the blood vessels in the mice's tails and then measuring them using a glucometer. The pancreas was dissected on the 20th day and pancreatic histology preparations were made for histological analysis. The results of this study indicate that Combretum indicum leaf extract has antihyperglycemic effects by protecting islets of Langerhans cells from alloxan-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract

Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) oil is currently an insect oil that potentially replaces fish oils in animal feed. However, there are limited information on its benefits and nutritional comparison of BSLF oil to fish oil. Present study was to evaluate the benefits of BSFL oil in animal feed and compare the BSFL to Fish oil. Collected data of BSFL oil in the animal feed and its physiological effects was obtained from several articles of  reputable journal and compiled into a table. Meanwhile, BSFL was reared and extract their oil to determine the fatty acid composition and compare to fish oil. The current study indicated that BSFL oil can be used in various animal feeds, such as aquafeed, broiler feed, and pets. The BSFL oil which is included in the feed showed an improvement in growth and other physiological responses of animals. Meanwhile, in comparison to fish oil, BSFL oil has a similar composition of fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n3) is detected in the BSFL oil, though the quantity is much lower than in fish oil.  Further, the BSFL oil also contains lauric acid. In conclusion, BSFL oil can be an alternative feed ingredient to substitute fish oil and has beneficial to the growth and physiological responses of the animal.
