Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between peer attachment and aggressiveness among adolescents in South Tangerang. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were collected from 320 students aged 13–17 years through stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the Peer Attachment Scale (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987) and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992), both adapted and validated for the Indonesian context. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The results demonstrated that peer attachment was negatively associated with adolescent aggressiveness (β = -0.503; f² = 0.21; Q² = 0.31). Communication emerged as the most dominant indicator of peer attachment, whereas hostility was the strongest indicator of aggression. Multi-group analysis showed no significant gender differences in the structural path, indicating that peer attachment consistently reduced aggressiveness in both male and female adolescents. These findings reinforce Bowlby’s attachment theory, emphasizing the role of secure peer bonds as a cognitive-affective regulator that mitigates aggressive tendencies. Practical implications suggest the need for school-based interventions that enhance peer attachment through evidence-based programs, such as peer mentoring models and social-emotional learning (SEL) modules from CASEL. Future studies should employ longitudinal designs and include mediating variables such as emotion regulation and moral disengagement to deepen the understanding of this relationship.
