Abstract

This research’s purpose is to describe the mathematical errors of civil engineer college students in subject Calculus II. The research’s method uses a qualitative approach that are reducing data, serving data, and conclude. Based on the research, it found that the major error to solve the problems of Calculus II is manipulating algebra form. The error of calculating is the second one after the error of manipulating algebra form. The researcher also finds that even the college students choose the right formula to solve the problems, they make an error in implementing the formula that they were chosen.

Abstract

This article describes junior high school students' literacy numeracy skills in solving story problems on algebra. The research was conducted at private-junior high school located in Batam with 25 female students' research subjects. The data were obtained through the literacy numeracy skills test and interview results, and then the data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive study. The results showed that the literacy numeracy skills of 25 female students showed an excellent category with an average score of 84.7. Students with the highest score can fulfilled two to three indicators, while students with low score of literacy numeracy skills’ test only fulfilled one indicator. The unfulfillment of indicators is caused by student errors include: 1) Not writing known data information and asked, 2) Wrong in solving the problem, 3) Wrong when calculating, and 4) Not writing conclusions on the results of the answers obtained.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan kesalahan representasi simbolik mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan HOTS. Penelitian merupaka  kualitatif deskriptif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan dokumentasi dan tes. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 9 mahasiswa yang dipilih berdasarkan hasil pengerjaan Lembar Kegiatan Mahasiswa (LKM). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan representasi simbolik yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa terdiri dari (1) kesalahan penulisan simbol turunan parsial, (2) kesalahan dalam menentukan hasil turunan parsial, (3) kesalahan dalam menentukan nilai fungsi turunan parsial, dan (4)  kesalahan dalam memahami perintah soal. Kesalahan-kesalahan representasi simbolik tersebut terjadi karena beberapa faktor yaitu kurangnya pemahaman terhadap simbol – simbol turunan parsial, ketidaktelitian dalam menyelesaikan soal, tidak memperhatikan dan memahami perintah soal dengan baik, tidak teliti dalam menuliskan jawaban akhir, tidak memahami konsep turunan parsial dengan baik, dan tidak memahami konsep dalam menentukan nilai fungsi dengan baik. AbstractThe purpose of this study is to describe the symbolic misrepresentation of students in solving HOTS problems. Research is a qualitative descriptive. Data collection is done by documentation and tests. The research subjects consisted of 9 students selected based on the results of the Student Activity Sheet (LKM). The results showed that the symbolic error made by students consisted of (1) writing errors of partial derivative symbols, (2) errors in determining the results of partial derivatives, (3) errors in determining the value of partial derivative functions, and (4) errors in understanding command matter. The errors of symbolic representation occur due to several factors, namely the lack of understanding of partial derivative symbols, inaccuracy in solving problems, not paying attention and understanding the order of questions properly, not careful in writing the final answer, not understanding the concept of partial derivatives well, and do not understand the concept of determining the value of a function properly.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan Lembar Kegiatan Kalkulus bercirikan representasi matematis yang valid, praktis dan efektif. Prosedur penelitian terdiri dari penelitian pendahuluan, pembuatan prototipe, dan penilaian. Hasil validasi, observasi, kuesioner, dan tes dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan dijelaskan secara kualitatif. Penelitian ini telah menunjukkan bahwa Lembar Kegiatan Kalkulus yang ditandai dengan representasi matematis memenuhi kriteria valid, praktis dan efektif. Lembar Kegiatan Kalkulus bercirikan representasi matematis yang telah dikembangkan meliputi: pertanyaan terbimbing untuk menulis ringkasan sehingga memperoleh data representasi verbal, masalah matematika untuk memperoleh data representasi simbol, dan pertanyaan refleksi di akhir Lembar Kegiatan Kalkulus untuk mengukur representasi verbal dan simbolik. AbstractThis study aimed to product Calculus Activity Sheets characterized by mathematical representations that are valid, practical and effective. The research method consisted of preliminary research, prototype making, and assessment. The results of the validation, observations, questionnaires, and tests were analyzed quantitatively and described qualitatively. This research has shown that Calculus Activity Sheets characterized by mathematical representations meet valid, practical and effective criteria. The Calculus Activity Sheets characterized by mathematical representation have been developed was include: guided questions to write summaries so that obtain verbal representation data, mathematical problems to obtain symbol representation data, and reflection questions at the end of Calculus Activity Sheets to measure students' verbal and symbolic representations.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan komunikasi ide matematis gaya belajar visual dan kinestetik pada pembelajaran online dalam menyelesaikan masalah terkait geometri. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian diskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan ialah angket, tes, dan wawancara. Subjek penelitian adalah 77 mahasiswa Pendidikan Matematika semester V yang menempuh mata kuliah Geometri Analitik. Dua mahasiswa dari setiap gaya belajar secara acak dipilih yang memiliki kemampuan komunikasi ide matematis katagori baik dan cukup untuk kemudian diwawancara. Analisis data hasil pengisian angket gaya belajar dilakukan secara kuantitatif. Sedangkan data hasil tes dianalisis dengan mengkategorikan hasil pengerjaan maahsiswa berdasar keterpenuhinya indikator komunikasi ide matematis, hasil wawancara digunakan sebagai data penegas dan pelengkap hasil tes. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan komunikasi ide matematis gaya belajar visual berbeda dengan gaya belajar kinestetik. Subjek dengan gaya belajar visual memiliki kemampuan komunikasi ide matematis lebih baik dibandingkan gaya belajar kinestetik pada pembelajaran online materi geometri analitik. Subjek yang memiliki gaya belajar visual lebih dominan menguasai indikator kedua terutama dalam menulis prosedur penyelesaian masalah secara runtun. Sedangkan subjek dengan gaya belajar kinestik tidak memiliki penguasaan secara dominan pada indikator komunikasi ide matematis.

Abstract

Representasi simbol melibatkan metonymy dan metaphor. Metonymy sebagai rantai penanda, dalam hal ini simbol, sedangkan metaphor sebagai pemaknaan dari penanda (simbol). Metonymy dan metaphor saling terkait dan terlibat dalam sistem penyimbolan saat seseorang menemukan simbol baru dalam proses pembelajaran matematika. Mahasiswa Teknik Sipil banyak menemukan simbol baru dalam perkuliahan Kalkulus II, seperti simbol fungsi dua variabel atau lebih beserta turunannya. Simbol-simbol tersebut tentunya berbeda dengan simbol fungsi satu variabel dan turunannya yang telah dipelajari pada Kalkulus I semester sebelumnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan mahasiswa Teknik Sipil dalam merepresentasikan simbol sebagai metonymy dan metaphor melalui penyelesaian masalah Turunan Parsial. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian studi kasus, sebagai salah satu upaya untuk mendeteksi kesulitan mahasiswa dalam belajar Turunan Parsial. Mahasiswa diberi worksheet berisi masalah Turunan Parsial yang difokuskan pada representasi simbol sebagai metonymy dan metaphor. Hasil penyelesaian masalah pada worksheet dianalisis berdasarkan representasi simbol turunan parsial baik dari notasinya maupun makna dari notasi. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah bahwa mahasiswa Teknik Sipil kurang mampu dalam merepresentasikan simbol turunan parsial fungsi f terhadap x maupun y. Mahasiswa mampu menentukan selesaian akhir turunan parsial dengan benar, namun kurang baik dalam penandaan simbol turunan parsial.

Abstract

Mathematical representation is one of the mathematical recognition’s form. This study aimed to compare the ability of students' mathematical symbol recognition between learning using Student Activity Sheets characterized by mathematical representation and learning using group presentation assignment activities. The research method employed Posttest-Only Control Group Design, between the control class and the experimental class. The control class is a class with group presentation learning assignments while the experimental class is a class with learning that uses MFIs characterized by mathematical representations. The data were obtained by providing tests to measure students' mathematical recognition abilities. The data were analyzed by using the t-test. The results of calculations with the help of SPSS showed that data from both classes are normally distributed and homogeneous. The results of data analysis conducted by t-test showed sig. ≥0.05 so H1 is rejected and H0 is accepted which means that there was no difference in the ability to recognize mathematical symbols between the control class and the experimental class. There was no difference in recognition abilities between the control class and the experimental class because learning activities in both classes are student-centered learning.

Abstract

Pembelajaran pada perguruan tinggi perlu memberikan banyak ruang kepada mahasiswa untuk mengembangkan ide dan keaktifan dalam kegiatan pembelajaran. Salah satu tolak ukur ketercapaian terhadap pembelajaran mahasiswa adalah hasil belajar. Oleh karena itu, peningkatan hasil belajar mahasiswa merupakan fokus tujuan yang akan dicapai melalui guided discovery learning pada matakuliah aljabar linier. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah meningkatkan hasil belajar mahasiswa melalui guided discovery learning. Pendekatan penelitian yang dilakukan adalah kualitatif berjenis Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Penelitian dilaksanakan dengan langkah-langkah sebagai berikut: melakulan analisis permasalahan, studi literatur, pelaksanaan penelitian, analisis data, kesimpulan dan pelaporan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah satu kelas mahasiswa angkatan tahun kedua Jurusan Pendidikan Matematika yang berjumlah 40. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dengan menggunakan guided discosvey learning, jumlah mahasiswa yang mendapatkan minimal nilai tuntas pada siklus kedua mengalami peningkatan dibandingkan jumlah mahasiswa yang mendapatkan minimal nilai tuntas pada siklus kedua. Peningkatan jumlah mahasiswa yang mendapatkan nilai di atas nilai yang telah ditetapkan, yaitu 70, adalah sebanyak 10 % atau sejumlah 4 mahasiswa. Temuan penelitian tidak menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan terhadap hasil belajar mahasiswa, namun berdasar pengamatan observer dan peneliti, mahasiswa menunjukkan respon yang baik dan sikap kolaboratif dalam kegiatan kelompok pada pelaksanaan guided discovery learning. Kata kunci: Guided Discovery Learning, Hasil Belajar, Aljabar Linier Abstract: Learning in higher education also needs to provide plenty of space for students to develop ideas and be always active in learning activities. One of the benchmarks for the achievement of student learning is learning outcomes. Therefore improving student learning outcomes is the focus of the goal to be achieved through guided discovery learning in linear algebra courses. The purpose of this study is to improve student learning outcomes through guided discovery learning. The research approach taken is a qualitative Classroom Action Research. The research was carried out with the following steps: carrying out problem analysis, literature study, research implementation, data analysis, conclusions, and reporting. The subjects of this study were a class of second-year students of the Department of Mathematics Education totaling 40. The results showed that by using guided discovery learning, the number of students who received a minimum grade point completion in the second cycle had increased compared to the number of students who received a minimum grade point score in the first cycle. Increasing the number of students who get a value above the predetermined value, which is 70, is as much as 10% or a number of 4 students. The findings of the study did not show a significant increase in student learning outcomes, but based on observer's and researchers' observations, students showed good responses and collaborative attitudes in group activities on guided discovery learning.Keywords: Guided Discovery Learning, Learning Outcomes, Linear Algebra

Abstract

The ability of students to represent mathematical expressions related to HOTS problems is still not good. This study aims to describe the representation of the mathematical expression of students in solving HOTS problems. This type of descriptive research using a qualitative approach in terms of aspects of the representation of mathematical expressions. The subjects of this study were 17 Civil Engineering students who were taking lectures in the academic year 2018/2019. The data collection technique in this research is the test item description. The instrument used was in the form of a test sheet. Data analysis was carried out through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students could involve mathematical symbols correctly and appropriately in each stage of solving HOTS analysis type questions. Students can present other mathematical representations into mathematical expression representations and involve mathematical symbols correctly and appropriately in each stage of HOTS problem solving, both Evaluation type and Creating type. Abstract

Creativity is the important thing that have been used to solve and face a problem. Training the creativity continue to be made to improve the ability to solve problems. This research aims to describe the upperclassmen college student’s creativity in solving the open ended problem in vector material. This research measure the mathematical creativity by indicators based on the aspect of fluency, flexibility, originality. The qualitative research was done with the first step, identification of the phenomenon, the creativity of students in resolving the open ended problem of vector material. Second, the identification of the subject, 41 upperclassmen college students. Third, hypothesis, how to solve the open ended problem of vector can describe the creativity of the students. Fourth, collecting the data, the results of the student's answer and the data were analyzed using critical thinking indicators. Fifth, interpretations and conclusions, using indicators to describe the results of the work of students and conclude. The results showed 10% of students are creative in solving a given problem because convenient these three aspects of creativity that has been set, 22% of the students are said to be creative enough because it convenient meets the two aspects of the third aspects of the set, and 68% of students including categories less creative because it convenient less than or equal to one aspect of the three aspects. Summary obtained suggests that aspects of the least convenience is the aspect of flexibility which suggests that the student cannot present more than one different way.
