Abstract

This study aims to investigate the factors influencing English teachers’ preferences for textbooks provided by private-sector publishers, with a focus on teachers in SMP 09 Tegal, Indonesia. The importance of textbooks in the teaching-learning process is crucial, as well as selecting appropriate textbook used in the classroom. Despite the availability of textbooks from both government and private-sector publishers, there is limited research on teachers’ preferences in this context. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological approach that involves in-depth interviews and observations of English teachers and students at SMP N 09 Tegal. Participants included three experienced English teachers and one chairman of the MGMP Bahasa Inggris (English Teacher Forum), as well as three students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected and analyzed thematically to uncover the underlying factors influencing textbook selection, teachers’ perception towards the use of private-sector publisher’s textbook, and challenges in the use of textbook by private-sector publisher’s textbook. The findings reveal that content quality and variety, including the incorporation of practice questions and visual media, are significant factor in teachers’ textbook preferences. Teachers also value textbooks’ usability, practicality, readability, and the availability of supplementary materials. Despite generally positive perceptions of textbook by private-sector publisher, several challenges have been identified., such as language and content complexity, lack of local context, and infrastructure limitations. Student related challenges include diverse characteristics and varying levels of English proficiency that needs adaptable teaching strategies from teachers. Therefore, this study suggests that government through Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research can make textbook that better suits the needs of students and teachers in the classroom in order to benefit Indonesian education in general. Keywords: challenges, English teachers, private-sector publishers, teachers’ perceptions, teachers’ preference.

Abstract

Short story writing instruction in the Indonesian Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Unsoed, aims to help students develop ideas through writing and improve vocabulary mastery. However, students often struggle to generate ideas independently and frequently rely on content from other sources. Additionally, many students have limited vocabulary, which affects their confidence in their writing. The project-based learning model has proven effective when applied to various learning activities. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the effectiveness of project-based learning in short story writing instruction within the Indonesian Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Unsoed. The study employs a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design, with third-semester students from the program as the population. The third-semester students involved in the study totaled 24. Measurements were taken with a pre-test conducted before the intervention and a post-test after the intervention. The results showed an average pre-test score of 68.25 for short story writing. The average post-test score, after applying the project-based learning model, was 80.33. This represents an increase of 12.08 points following the use of the project-based learning model for short story writing. The use of this model was effective, as the average score improved after the intervention.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the difficulties sixth-grade elementary school students face in improving speaking and the effectiveness of utilizing the Free4talk application in improving their speaking skills. Identified issues include lack of time for English practice, feelings of embarrassment lack of confidence in pronunciation, and limited vocabulary in English. This research used a pre-experimental method with a purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted on grade 6th students at SD Al Furqoon in the Academic Year of 2023/2024, with a total sample are 22 students. The research instruments to collect the data included a questionnaire, pre-test, post-test, and observation. Identified issues include lack of time for English practice, feelings of embarrassment lack of confidence in English pronunciation, and limited vocabulary in English. This is evident from the F value of 1.286 and sig=0.000, which means <0.05, this implies that there is an influence from the implementation of the Free4talk application on language speaking skills. For the second question, the researcher found the formula d(f) = n-2, resulting in a calculated d(f) value of 20 and the result of testing the variables of Free4talk application implementation (X) and improvement of speaking skills (Y) above supported by Cronbach’s Alpha values generated successively of 0.737 and 0.819. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ speaking skills after using the Free4talk application. Statistical analysis reveals a significant value indicating a meaningful impact of implementing the Free4talk application on students’ language-speaking skills. In conclusion, the utilization of the Free4talk application in enhancing the speaking skills of sixth-grade elementary school students is quite effective. This suggests that the application can be a beneficial tool in English language learning at the elementary level.
