Abstract

Abstract: In literary education, literary competence lies in important position as it reflects students’ critical thinking ability to understand text as a whole and connect it to both their experience and social phenomenon. Recently, the research on literary competence focuses on the implementation of reader-response writing; however, it rarely highlights the importance of literary competence mapping through the quantification of the responses. This research aims at revealing the implementation of students’ literary competence mapping by using reader-response writing and The Council for the Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Mark Scheme for literature subject for the assessment. Seven reader response strategies by Beach and Marshal (1991) were used as the framework. Selecting 21 students of English Literature in Prose Analysis class as the research object, this research employed qualitative descriptive method. The result shows, in completing seven reader responses, students provide various answers reflecting their ability to get into the stories. The students mostly find it difficult to describe setting of place and time and their influence to the plot of the story. In assessment process, several adjustments on distributing points of CCEA GCSE Mark Scheme for literature subject.  Mark Scheme in each strategy have been made. Almost half of the students are in the band 4 and band 5 meanwhile the rest of them are in band 2 and band 3. This research concludes that reader-response writing and CCEA GCSE Mark Scheme can be alternative to map the students’ literary competence. The research further suggest that the students should be exposed more on the analysis of setting and on the argumentation building on how they should provide sufficient reason and textual evidence. In addition, the lecturer should also emphasize the expected competence level the English Literature students should acquire.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative content analysis to examine Maroon 5's "Animals" as a multi-layered narrative that explores themes of obsession and desire. The lyrics frame desire as a predatory act, blurring the lines between attraction and obsession, while simultaneously raising critical concerns about objectification and gendered power dynamics. Through close analysis of the song"™s lyrics, particular attention is given to phrases and metaphors that invite multiple interpretations. The analysis is anchored in Jacques Derrida's theory of deconstruction, which reveals how the song destabilises traditional binary oppositions, such as predator and prey. This approach illuminates the nuanced interplay of dominance and vulnerability within the song's narrative. The findings suggest that "Animals" offers an intricate commentary on complex human relationships, while also reflecting broader societal attitudes toward gender and power. The study contributes to the growing discourse on media representation and encourages critical engagement with popular culture as a means to challenge and dissect prevailing cultural  narratives.

Abstract

This study examines Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House through feminist frameworks, focusing on Nora’s navigation of 19th-century Norway’s public and private spheres. Using Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of “the Other” and Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, the analysis reveals how patriarchal norms shaped Nora’s subjugation and ultimate rebellion. The study highlights the play’s enduring relevance in advocating for gender equality and contributes to feminist literary criticism by exploring the intersection of gender, power, and societal norms. While previous studies have extensively analyzed Nora's character, this study explores how the play's portrayal of the duality of public and private spaces shapes Nora's rebellion against societal expectations. Furthermore, this study explores how Ibsen's work continues to resonate with contemporary audiences, highlighting the enduring relevance of his critique of gender inequality and the need for women's empowerment. By examining the enduring power of A Doll's House, the article argues that Ibsen's play continues to serve as a vital tool for understanding and challenging the structures that perpetuate gender inequality in the modern world.

Abstract

Semiotics is a scientific study or method of analysis used to examine signs in a context of scenarios, images, texts, and scenes in movies into something that can be interpreted. In this qualitative research, the researchers will examine Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis with a focus on the difference between denotative meaning (literal meaning) and connotative (deeper or implied meaning) in the representation of visual and verbal symbols in the movie. By examining visual and verbal symbols, such as striped pajamas and barbed wire fences, the research reveals themes of oppression, social inequality, and innocence. The qualitative method includes repeated viewing and detailed note-taking of symbolic elements. This analysis provides insights into how visual media communicates complex historical trauma and moral messages. This movie tells about the friendship between a boy who is the son of the leader of the Nazi armed forces and a boy who is a prisoner living in a concentration camp. This study found that there are 7 elements contained in the film such as the cover, Bruno's family home, concentration camp, striped pajamas, numbers on pajamas, wire fences, and also the friendship between Bruno and Shmuel which illustrate the historical conditions at that time and also reflect the themes of oppression, social differences, injustice, and innocence. The results of this study are expected to deepen the understanding of the use of visual and verbal symbols in film as a tool to convey ideology and cultural insights, as well as moral messages. Keywords: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas; semiotic analysis; denotation; connotation
