Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the speech features in gossiping produced by the female characters, of the Film “Bridesmaids” in which the settings are a house, apartment, and restaurant.  The theories used are Jone’s theory about gossiping, and Lakoff and Holme’s theory of female speech features and social factors  The descriptive qualitative method is used in this study as the research method since the numbers are not the form of the data but in the forms of utterances. This study aims to answer the problem of what speech features are used in gossiping.   This study found that the topic that is mostly revealed gossiping is house talk and the most speech features used is swearing and many produced in topics of gossiping ‘bitching’.

Abstract

Translating is a process of transferring meaning from the SL forms of words, phrases, clauses and sentences to the TL forms. In translating source language text (English) into target language text (Indonesian) will find some problems because of the different grammatical rules between them. One of the problems occur when translating English adverb of manner with suffix –ly into Indonesian is how to change the form of English adverb of manner with suffix -ly into Indonesian adverb of manner since both languages have different grammar system of adverb of manner. This research focused on what kinds of shifts occur when translating adverb of manner sih suffix –ly in Poe’s work entitle “Pit Pendulum” into Indonesian “Jurang dan Pendulum” by Maggie Tiojakin. The results of analysis were described not in number but in form of narration qualitatively. The results showed that the Unit shift, structure shift, class shift and intra- system shift occurred in translating passive voice of English as SL to Indonesian as TL.

Abstract

A sentence is a grammatically complete string of words expressing a complete thought. ThIs concept means tgat tgere wukk be kujekt varuiys strubg if wirds . This various string of words will cause different kinds of sentence. The kinds of sentence can be studied from syntactic  and semantic point of view.This article discusses the kinds of sentence from syntax ad semantic point of view. It tries to discuss what kind of sentence a sentence belongs to. The discussion is based on theory of syntax and theory of semantics  and takes a concclussion.A sentence which has one clause and it is ended by a full stop and the speaker asserts its proposition will be a simple sentence, a statement sentence and a declarative sentence as well. Besude these, it may also belong to an analytic sentence if it is necessarily true as the result of the sense of the words in it.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental literacy skill that determines students’ academic success and readiness for the workforce. However, Indonesian students’ low performance in international assessments highlights the urgency of addressing reading literacy, particularly at the vocational high school level where learners are preparing for internships and direct entry into employment. This study examines the influence of verbal-linguistic intelligence and teacher competence, within the framework of the Understanding by Design (UbD) approach, on students’ reading comprehension, with learning motivation considered as a mediating variable. A quantitative research design was applied, involving 104 students from a Vocational High School (Phase F), selected using Slovin’s formula and simple random sampling. Data were collected through tests and questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with the Partial Least Squares method. The findings demonstrate that both verbal-linguistic intelligence and teacher competence have a significant positive effect on learning motivation. These factors also showed a positive influence on reading comprehension, although their direct influence had weak significance. Importantly, learning motivation is confirmed as a strong mediator, strengthening the impact of teacher competence and verbal-linguistic intelligence on reading comprehension. This study underscores the importance of fostering students’ linguistic capacity and enhancing teacher competence through the UbD approach, as these efforts are more effective when supported by high learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze morphemic changes through the process of derivation in the lyrics of songs on Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, as well as explain the emotional and artistic functions that arise from these changes. The focus of the research includes three songs, namely But Daddy I Love Him, Fortnight, and Guilty as Sin?. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a morphological approach to identify forms of derivation, as well as an analysis of emotional and aesthetic meaning based on the stylistic theory of Leech (1981) and the conceptual metaphor of Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The results show that the use of prefixes (un-, dis-, a-) and suffixes (-y, -ful, -ous, -ing, -al, -ly, -ity, -er, -ic, -less, -ify, -ry) Not only does it change the class of words, but it also enriches the emotional meaning and artistic imagery in the lyrics. Derivation is used as a poetic strategy to describe inner conflicts, emotional vulnerability, and the dynamics of personal relationships in musical works. Thus, derivation serves not only grammatically but also as a means of creative expression that connects the structure of language with emotional experience in popular music.  Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perubahan morfem melalui proses derivasi dalam lirik lagu pada album The Tortured Poets Department karya Taylor Swift, serta menjelaskan fungsi emosional dan artistik yang muncul dari perubahan tersebut. Fokus penelitian meliputi tiga lagu, yaitu But Daddy I Love Him, Fortnight, dan Guilty as Sin?. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan morfologi untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk derivasi, serta analisis makna emosional dan estetik berdasarkan teori stilistika Leech (1981) dan metafora konseptual Lakoff dan Johnson (1980). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan prefiks (un-, dis-, a-) dan sufiks (-y, -ful, -ous, -ing, -al, -ly, -ity, -er, -ic, -less, -ify, -ry) tidak hanya mengubah kelas kata, tetapi juga memperkaya makna emosional dan citraan artistik dalam lirik. Derivasi digunakan sebagai strategi puitis untuk menggambarkan konflik batin, kerentanan emosional, serta dinamika hubungan personal dalam karya musik. Dengan demikian, derivasi berfungsi tidak hanya secara gramatikal, tetapi juga sebagai sarana ekspresi kreatif yang menghubungkan struktur bahasa dengan pengalaman emosional dalam musik populer.

Abstract

his study analyzes the forms and functions of sarcasm in viral memes and audio parodies on social media using a pragmatic approach. The results show that sarcasm does not merely function as a form of ridicule but becomes a mechanism of humor that emerges through the discrepancy between literal utterances and actual intentions. Based on Attardo's classification, the dominant forms of sarcasm in the data include aggressive sarcasm, mock politeness, ironic encouragement, and hyperbolic sarcasm, which function to criticize characters' behavior, express annoyance, and create comic effects through exaggerated emotional responses. All the data indicate that humor is formed through violations of Grice's maxims, particularly the maxims of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. These violations do not signify a failure of communication but rather a deliberate linguistic strategy used to create digital humor. Additionally, memes work through a pragmatic construction based on emotional contrast—for example, when a request for help is met with a sarcastic response that enhances the comedic effect while making it easier for the audience to recognize the sarcasm. Overall, this study confirms that understanding sarcasm in digital culture depends on the pragmatic context and shared knowledge among users. Abstrak Studi ini menganalisis bentuk dan fungsi sarkasme dalam meme viral dan parodi audio di media sosial menggunakan pendekatan pragmatik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sarkasme tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai bentuk ejekan, tetapi menjadi mekanisme humor yang muncul melalui ketidaksesuaian antara ucapan literal dan niat sebenarnya. Berdasarkan klasifikasi Attardo, bentuk sarkasme yang dominan dalam data meliputi sarkasme agresif, sopan santun palsu, dorongan ironis, dan sarkasme hiperbolik, yang berfungsi untuk mengkritik perilaku karakter, mengekspresikan ketidaknyamanan, dan menciptakan efek komik melalui respons emosional yang berlebihan. Semua data menunjukkan bahwa humor terbentuk melalui pelanggaran terhadap maksim-maksim Grice, khususnya maksim kualitas, kuantitas, relevansi, dan cara. Pelanggaran ini tidak menandakan kegagalan komunikasi, melainkan strategi linguistik yang disengaja untuk menciptakan humor digital. Selain itu, meme bekerja melalui konstruksi pragmatik berdasarkan kontras emosional—misalnya, ketika permintaan bantuan dibalas dengan respons sarkastis yang memperkuat efek komedi sambil memudahkan audiens mengenali sarkasme. Secara keseluruhan, studi ini menegaskan bahwa pemahaman sarkasme dalam budaya digital bergantung pada konteks pragmatik dan pengetahuan bersama di antara pengguna.

Abstract

Indonesia sedang mengalami akselerasi ekonomi digital yang eksponensial, namun bonus demografi yang didominasi oleh Generasi Z menghadapi paradoks kesenjangan keterampilandigital produktif. Penelitian berbasis pengabdian masyarakatini bertujuan untuk mentransformasi literasi digital konsumtifmenjadi kompetensi wirausaha produktif pada 76 siswa SMK Ma'Arif Purbolinggo, Lampung Timur—sebuah wilayah non-perkotaan yang merepresentasikan tantangan pemerataanketerampilan nasional. Program ini diimplementasikan dariApril hingga September 2025 menggunakanmetode Participatory Action Research (PAR) yang terstrukturdalam lima tahapan: sosialisasi, pelatihan intensif (content creation dan copywriting), penerapan teknologi, pendampingan, dan strategi keberlanjutan. Pengukurandampak menggunakan pendekatan mixed-methods, yang mengombinasikan data kuantitatif dari pre-test dan post-test dengan analisis kualitatif melalui penilaian portofolio dan wawancara semi-terstruktur. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkanpeningkatan signifikan pemahaman konseptual dan keterampilan praktis pemasaran digital sebesar 60%. Secarakualitatif, terjadi pergeseran pola pikir mendasar, di mana seluruh peserta (100%) berhasil menciptakan portofoliodigital awal dan lebih dari 70% aktif memproduksi kontenperdana. Program ini berhasil menanamkan fondasiketerampilan teknis menggunakan low-barrier tools sepertiCanva dan CapCut, serta membangun kesadaran personal branding sebagai modal awal memasuki ekonomi kreatif. Model intervensi ini terbukti efektif dan dapat direplikasiuntuk memperkuat ekosistem wirausaha digital di tingkatlokal, sekaligus menjawab tantangan kebutuhan talenta digital nasional.
