Abstract

This study aims to investigate how inquiry chart facilitates students in learning critical reading and to describe benefits and challenges found by students during teaching and learning process. Qualitative research data were collected through classroom observation, written test and depth interview. The results revealed that I-Chart learning strategy facilitated students to learn critical reading abilities. Deep interview confirmed that students responded positively toward the I-Chart learning strategies. They were motivated to learn and read more texts. They admitted that the learning strategies might have been the tool for them to enhance deep knowledge of a topic. However, the study found that students remained inactive in delivering arguments in the classroom. Students’ background knowledge had been one of the teaching obstacles found in this study. Time constraints and unavailability of internet access might be the serious problem to encounter in the process of teaching and learning in the classroom. More participants are recommended for further research. Keywords:  Inquiry-Chart, Reading

Abstract

The events of crimes in society receive big attention from mass media, as well as SOLOPOS, one of the biggest newspapers in Central Java. The mass media cannot be considered a neutral channel that reports the social actors in crime news. This study observes and researches the discourse of crime news in SOLOPOS, identifies how the newspaper represents the social actors in the discourse, and explores the representation. The discourse analysis of Theo van Leeuwen's model is used to find qualitative content analysis methods. This method tries to understand the message reflected in the representation of social actors in discourse. The results of the study showed that SOLOPOS uses a strategy of exclusion and inclusion. The exclusion strategies used were nomination and elimination of adverbial function. The inclusion discourse strategies used were differentiation, abstraction, categorization, identification, determination, assimilation, and association. The strategies were found in all parts of the text, those were in the title, lead, and news body. Furthermore, the exclusion strategy was found in reporting criminal cases of corruption which tried to exclude the actor or the perpetrators. Then, the inclusion strategy involved in almost a variety of cases that tried to expose the perpetrators. It means that SOLOPOS tend to display the perpetrators in their crime discourse presentation for the benefit of the victims.

Abstract

Reading is a fundamental tool for gleaning information and engaging in many fields of literacy. However, poor reading outcomes among Indonesian students on the PISA test indicate a low literacy level. The reading ability referred to in this study is the ability to understand reading texts on various topics and forms. This study used a sample of 234 students from eight schools in North Kalimantan Province. The data were obtained from reading tests carried out by students via computers. The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, short answers, and essays. The data was processed in several stages, including data reduction and item calibration using the Rasch Model. Apart from reading tests, data were also obtained through questionnaires to gather information about literacy activities carried out by students at school and at home. The results showed that nationally the average reading literacy ability of students in North Kalimantan Province was at a low level, namely at score 349, while the highest reading literacy ability average score in Indonesia was 489. The results also showed that there was a relationship between students' reading literacy skills and their conditions and habits at home. As a recommendation, students need to be more accustomed to reading multimodal texts through multimedia devices. It is important to make them capable of understanding texts containing not only words, but also pictures, numbers, graphs, and tables as demands for modern literacy. Moreover, parents also need to be to encourage to help improve the students’ literacy capacity.
