Abstract

______________________________________________________________________________________ Interest is one of the key factors that motivates students to learn English, particularly in informal educational contexts involving immigrant children. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence students' interest in learning English at Sanggar Bimbingan Sentul, an informal learning center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five students selected purposively based on their active use of English. The interviews, conducted in a relaxed setting outside the classroom, explored students' experiences, motivations, and social contexts related to English learning. The findings reveal that students' interest in English is shaped by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsically, students are driven by aspirations to pursue higher education and a genuine enjoyment of the language, particularly when engaging with peers. Extrinsically, the demand from the school environment to use English in daily activities reinforces habitual use, which gradually enhances interest. Additionally, social interactions with friends who speak English further strengthen motivation and increase confidence. The study contributes to the growing body of research on language learning motivation by providing empirical insights from marginalized immigrant students in informal educational settings. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating culturally responsive approaches, peer collaboration, and digital media into English language instruction. These implications may guide teachers, informal education providers, and policymakers in designing more inclusive, motivating, and sustainable learning environments for vulnerable learners.

Abstract

Blended learning yields some challenges and difficulties for learners, and they should have an appropriate strategy to deal with the use of e-resources. This research aimed at: (1) explaining the various learning strategies used by students to learn English using e-resources in blended learning, and (2) determining the factors that influence their choice of these strategies. The researcher used descriptive-quantitative methods in this study, with the participants involving 2 universities. The SILL questionnaire and interviews were used to collect the data. The results showed that the participants mostly used the metacognitive method, with an average of 3.86. The study also revealed that students used five other methods, including cognitive (M = 3.35), compensation (M = 3.34), affective (M = 3.20), social (M = 3.16), and memory (M = 3.14). Moreover, students’ use of these strategies was influenced by some factors, including motivation to learn English, learning style, and ease of learning. In conclusion, the various strategies employed for learning English were different, as were the factors influencing strategy selection by each participant. This research provides meaningful insights into how the blended learning can be boosted through the implementation of appropriate learning strategies, particularly related to the use of e-resources, so that it will increase students' comprehension and achievement during the learning process.

Abstract

Batik learning faces persistent challenges, particularly the scarcity of alternative instructional media and limited student engagement in the digital era. This study developed POBALIS LIDI, a hybrid media that integrates physical and digital elements to support students’ batik-making achievement in a valid, practical, and effective manner. The research employed a design-based research approach using the ADDIE model, involving fifth-grade students from a primary school in Indonesia. Data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and tests. The validity tests demonstrated that the media was highly valid, with material validation at 91.66%, media validation at 97.50%, and instructional validation at 93.75%. The media’s practicality was also rated highly, with a score of 90.33% based on positive user feedback. Implementation proved effective, as indicated by a one-sample t-test yielding p 0.001 and a Cohen’s d value of 1.687, indicating a large effect size. The average student learning outcome was 81.91, exceeding the minimum mastery criteria. This study concludes that the developed hybrid media successfully integrates authentic and digital learning experiences. The research contributes to educational technology by developing culturally grounded hybrid media that enhance adaptive learning in the digital era.

Abstract

There were many researchers bring out the topic of the community of inquiry (CoI) in education but there were still few teachers who were aware of the importance of CoI and how to implement CoI into learning. This study was, then, aimed at finding out (1) how the community of inquiry was explicitly applied to English language learning, as well as (2) the impact of the community of inquiry to promote students’ autonomous learning. This research was a case study. The researcher used observation and interview as the research instrument. The subjects were the seventh and eighth-grade students of Pangasinan State University (PSU) Integrated High School, Philippines. The sample has consisted of 101 participants from three classes: 7th-grade Malakas and Maganda, and 8th-grade Matapat. The finding showed that CoI had been implemented during the English language teaching and learning process. Group activity or collaborative task was mostly used to engage students to learn and work in a community. In language acquisition, CoI was supposed to provide students with not only cognitive intelligence but also much-needed social intelligence. Therefore, the CoI approach has been considered to be effective in language teaching activities for secondary education students to enhance students’ autonomous learning.
