Abstract

This study examines how the systemic functional grammar is employed in Vaseline advertisements to construct and convey notions of beauty, as well as the underlying brand messages communicated through promotional content. Specifically, it compared the linguistic features on the Vaseline ads for the US and Indonesia. Qualitative-descriptive methodology was employed in this study. The data collected correlated to the transitivity found in the sentences on both advertisements. The Transitivity in SFG theory by Halliday & Matthiessen serves as the analytical framework, which focuses on three elements of transitivity: process, participants, and circumstance. The findings show that Vaseline advertisements' transitivity refers to a reflection of relational and material processes. Vaseline US focuses on its line of products and services to achieve dream skin, while Vaseline Indonesia emphasizes its key ingredients and reputation as an innovator. The concept of beauty in both nations is also reflected in the transitivity. Vaseline US encourages Americans to strive for healthy skin, while Vaseline Indonesia perpetuates the myth of ageless and bright skin. In conclusion, Vaseline's technique of differentiating linguistic elements in Vaseline advertisements based on the concept of beauty standards might be considered effective as it makes Vaseline becomes one of the biggest beauty brands.

Abstract

This article examines the impact of translanguaging spaces on the language practices and identity constructions of Indonesian English learners. To answer these questions, we employed multiple conceptual frameworks, including the concept of translanguaging, moment analysis, and English global positions. We collected the data through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and an analysis of written texts from fifth-semester students in the English Literature department at an Indonesian university in Malang. The findings show that translanguaging is highly appreciated by most Indonesian English learners, both in oral presentations and written works. Translanguaging has several pedagogical functions, including improving students' understanding of content, clarifying complex ideas, providing authenticity to stories, and reducing language anxiety. We also found multiple and dynamic identities constructed by participants in different contexts, namely hybrid identity, multilingual identity, laissez-faire liberalism, colonial celebration, and linguistic imperialism. These dynamic identities are primarily influenced by the dominance of monolingual and colonial celebration views in various contexts, despite the increasing use of translanguaging in classrooms.

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines the representation of Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Kaesang Pangarep on the cover of Tempo newspaper within the context of political nepotism allegations in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies multimodal analysis to uncover the visual meanings and narratives in the newspaper cover’s illustration and texts. Data were collected from several editions of Tempo’s newspaper featuring both sons of President Joko Widodo in various political nomination contexts. The analysis reveals that the illustrations on the newspaper covers depict Gibran and Kaesang as central figures benefitting from their positions as the president's children, often accompanied by elements of satire and criticism regarding nepotistic practices. Through the combination of visual elements and text, Tempo constructs a narrative that questions their political legitimacy amid the dynamics of national political contests. This research aims to provide insights into how mass media play a role in framing issues of nepotism and influencing public perceptions of political integrity during Jokowi's era.

Abstract

This study departs from the view that Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa website serves as a showcase for the national and international language. How does the website display and represent the image and value of the Indonesian language both domestically and abroad. The purpose of this study is to reveal the linguistic ideology and diffusion of language (terminology) through the digital media of official state institutions. The research method used is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (CDA), focusing on three dimensions of analysis, namely textual analysis (micro description), discursive practice (meso interpretation), and social analysis (macro-explanation). This study focuses on the features of BIPA, Penerjemahan Daring, and KBBI Daring on the website. The results of the study show that the features on the Badan Bahasa website represent Indonesian as a national identity and a means of diplomacy. These features are not merely a collection of data or terms, but play a role in spreading the ideology, hegemony, and legitimacy of Indonesian at the regional, national, and international levels. Although the language standardization efforts have been relatively successful, it is necessary to continuously update the data and evaluate its effectiveness in society. This study is limited to the study of language diffusion, and further in-depth research is needed through other approaches such as linguistic corpus, sociolinguistics, and comparative historical linguistics.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to determine how women’s bodies are commodified through analysing the use of visual and verbal elements in the French Bio yoghurt advertisement. The analysis was conducted using Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s multimodal theory as well as Firouzeh Nahavandi’s theory of body commodification to examine how women’s bodies become commodities in the media context. Research data in the form of a video clip of advertisements was taken from the official website of Institut national de l’audiovisuel. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The results indicate two forms of  commodication of women’s bodies in Bio yoghurt advertisements, consisting of commodification of women bodies through sensuality and through youthful body. Women’s bodies as an important part of the marketing strategy for Bio yoghurt products. The combination of visual elements, such as the gestures and actions performed by the actors in the advertisement, eye contact, camera focus on certain parts, shooting techniques, lighting direction, colours, and verbal elements, such as narration, shows that women’s bodies are commodified to create appeal so that the audience is interested in watching the advertisement, which then leads them to buy and consume Bio yoghurt products. This finding confirms that women’s bodies are used as capitalist values, that sensual, happy, young and healthy bodies are bodies that can be shaped and maintained through product consumption.
