Abstract

Abstract

Although frequently described as low-fertility or low-productivity habitat, coastal mudflats serve as important feeding grounds for fish. Many fish species from adjacent coral reefs, seagrass beds, or mangroves foraging periodically in mudflats. Because of this foraging behaviour, some local fishermen are known to utilize the mudflats to catch fish. However, the impact of this catching activities to the ecosystem has not been fully discovered. An examination of the fish community structure and levels of environmental stress had carried out in the mudflat ecosystem of the coast of Kaledupa Island in Wakatobi National Park (WNP), Indonesia. Two mudflat study sites were selected from the shore of Balasuna and Tampara villages located between mangroves and coral reefs. Data were sampled from the fish catch of local fishermen using fish fences (sero) installed in each mudflat area. Fish community structure was analyzed using diversity index and index of relative importance (IRI). ABC curves and species exploitation rate were used to assess the local environmental pressure. A total of 74 fish species were recorded from the mudflats of Kaledupa, which was found to be dominated by reef-associated fish species, comprising 63 species and accounting for 85% of the total catch. Additionally, although both sites had relatively high reef fish diversity, the obtained Clarke’s W-statistic values were approximately 0, indicating that the local fish communities presented moderate levels of disturbance. Three out of five fish species with the highest IRI values were found to be over-exploited, namely Siganus canaliculatus, Lethrinus ornatus, and Lethrinus variegatus.

Abstract

Forest fires have emerged as a significant threat to the environment, wildlife, and human lives, necessitating the development of effective early detection systems for firefighting and mitigation efforts. In this study, we introduce TeutongNet, a modified ResNet50V2 model designed to detect forest fires accurately. The model is trained on a curated dataset and evaluated using various metrics. Results show that TeutongNet achieves high accuracy (98.68%) with low false positive and false negative rates. The model's performance is further supported by the ROC curve analysis, which indicates a high degree of accuracy in classifying fire and non-fire images. TeutongNet demonstrates its effectiveness in reliable forest fire detection, providing valuable insights for improved fire management strategies.

Abstract

Alopias pelagicus Nakamura 1935 or pelagic thresher shark is an epipelagic species of shark prone to overexploitation due to its epipelagic habitat and slow life history. In 2019, based on existing data on abundance and exploitation, A. Pelagicus was included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species with the category of endangered (EN). This literature review analyzed the relationship between A. pelagicus life history and overexploitation susceptibility. The method used is a comprehensive search of international journals in online databases from ScienceDirect and Google Scholar with certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the criteria, seven out of 270 search results of international journal articles were included for the analysis. The results from the seven journal articles shows that A. pelagicus has a slow life history or k-selected life history. This life history is characterized by slow sexual maturity, low fecundity, long gestation period, annual reproductive cycle, slow growth, long lifespan, and low natural mortality rate. This life history makes A. pelagicus prone to overexploitation because if the mortality rate of catching exceeds the natural mortality rate, it will take a long time for A. pelagicus to return to their original population size.

Abstract

The lower area of the Ie Seu-um manifestation, located in Ie Seu-um village, Aceh Besar District, harbors several medicinal plants that exhibit potential for the treatment of infectious diseases. This study aims to assess the secondary metabolite content and in vitro antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans of medicinal plants inhabiting the geothermal region. Medicinal plants, namely Pluchea indica (L.) Less., Acrostichum aureum L., Acacia mangium L., and Calotropis gigantea (L.) Dryand., were collected within a range of 100-150 meters from the hot springs in the lower area. Methanol extracts of these medicinal plants underwent phytochemical screening and were tested for antimicrobial activity using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method at a concentration of 50%. The results of phytochemical screening demonstrated positive variations in alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, triterpenoids, and tannins for each medicinal plant. The antimicrobial activity of the methanol extracts noticeably inhibited the growth of S. aureus compared to E. coli and C. albicans. The largest inhibition zones were observed for the leaf part of A. mangium (12.70 ± 2.30 mm) against S. aureus, the aerial part of A. aureum (11.57 ± 2.01 mm) against E. coli, and the aerial part of P. indica (9.89 ± 1.11 mm) against C. albicans. Based on the research findings, medicinal plants originating from the lower area of the Ie Seu-um manifestation exhibit potential as antimicrobial agents, particularly against gram-positive bacteria.
