Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of English language teaching in the elementary school teacher education program within the framework of progressive education philosophy. Employing a qualitative descriptive research method, the study was conducted at a university in Yogyakarta, specifically within the Elementary School Teacher Education (S1 PGSD) program. The research subjects included English language lecturers and first-semester students. Data collection techniques involved participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that English language teaching in the PGSD program, viewed through the lens of progressive education philosophy, can be observed from the aspects of educators, learners, teaching methods, and curriculum. Educators play a crucial role in creating learning that is according to student needs, active, democratic, and motivates learning environments. Learners are considered active participants in the learning process. The applied teaching methods include problem-solving and learning by doing. The curriculum is tailored to meet learners' needs, experience-based, and open in nature. The implications of this research underscore the importance for educators to design meaningful, contextually relevant, and contemporary learning experiences for students. It also encourages further exploration by other researchers into the implementation of English language teaching from alternative educational philosophy perspectives.

Abstract

Student achievement is an indicator of learning success that indicates the extent to which a student has acquired the skills and knowledge set forth by their educational program. Understanding students' learning styles plays a significant role in determining learning success. One of the efforts to optimize student achievement is facilitating learning activities that align with students' learning styles. Students are no longer preoccupied with understanding their learning styles but are focused on deepening the material. This study aims to describe the learning style profiles of students, and students and lecturers in the learning process can follow up on the results. This study uses a survey research method with a questionnaire instrument containing 54 statements. A learning styles questionnaire prepared based on the opinion of De Poter & Hernacki is used as a data collection tool. Learning styles are identified as visual learning style, auditorial learning style, and kinesthetic learning style. The questionnaire was distributed to students in semesters 2, 4, 6, and 8, totaling 51 students. The data analysis technique used is a descriptive analysis of the questionnaire results. The questionnaire results show that 36% of students have visual and kinesthetic learning styles, 14% have auditory, and 14% are inconsistent. This inconsistency may suggest a balanced learning style, where students do not rely heavily on one learning mode but rather integrate multiple styles depending on the context. Therefore, the Science Education Study Program lecturers should implement a learning model that can facilitate visual and kinesthetic styles, even though the subjects taught are theoretical. Incorporating a variety of teaching methods, such as visual aids, hands-on activities, and auditory discussions, can accommodate the diverse learning preferences of students, leading to a more inclusive and effective learning environment.

Abstract

Previous research has shown that school principals play a crucial role in supporting the success of English language teaching for young learners (TEYL) within the context of English as a second language (ESL). However, there has been limited research focusing on the role of principals in supporting the success of TEYL in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL). Therefore, the objective of this study is to describe the role of private elementary school principals in Yogyakarta in the implementation of TEYL. This study is a case study conducted in two private elementary schools (ES) in Yogyakarta that have achievements in the field of English language education. The subjects of this study include the school principals, curriculum coordinators, English teachers, and staff members of ES A and B. The research instruments were developed based on the Principals’ Work Manual (Directorate of Educational Personnel Development for Elementary and Secondary Education, 2017) and were used to collect data through interviews and observations. The data analysis technique to be used in this research referred to Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The activities in data analysis are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings indicate that the role of private elementary school principals in Yogyakarta in supporting TEYL encompasses several aspects. The aspects are curriculum implementation, student development, teacher professional development and involvement of educational staff, provision of infrastructure, fostering a positive academic culture and atmosphere, enhancing parental and community participation, and organizing additional programs aimed at improving the quality of teaching. The implications of this study suggest that school principals hold a strategic position in assisting teachers to optimize TEYL. Further research could explore the development of training programs for principals to support TEYL within the context of EFL. Keywords: principals, private elementary schools, TEYL, EFL

Abstract

A solid vocabulary foundation is essential in learning English as a foreign language. This study examines the impact of the 3N method (Niteni, Nirokke, Nambahi), rooted in Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational philosophy, on English vocabulary mastery among elementary students. Using a one-group pre-test and post-test design, twelve fifth-grade students in a private English tutoring program in Yogyakarta participated in structured sessions. Vocabulary mastery was measured through four indicators: pronunciation, spelling, grammar, and meaning, based on Cameron’s framework. The 3N method was delivered in three stages: observing (Niteni), imitating (Nirokke), and creating (Nambahi), supported by comprehensible input. Results showed gains across all indicators, with the highest in meaning (gain 0.75) and spelling (gain 0.60). Behavioral improvements were also observed, including increased confidence and contextual vocabulary use. The findings indicate that the 3N method effectively enhances vocabulary skills both cognitively and behaviorally. This study provides novel empirical evidence on the integration of a culturally grounded instructional model with a linguistic measurement framework, offering a validated alternative for vocabulary instruction in early English education.
