Abstract

Background: One of the areas of competence expected from a doctor in Indonesia is clinical skills. It will be assessed in the National Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). In the Faculty of Medicine Airlangga University, there are four clinical skill modules in second to fifth semester. Afterward, students go to clinical posting to apply their clinical skill and practice profesionalism to real patients. The objective of this study is to measure the correlation between clinical skill examination score, educational environment, and Grade Point Average (GPA) during clinical posting and National OSCE’s score.Method: This study used cross sectional approach. Data were obtained from 143 national OSCE’s participant. Primary data obtained from clinical posting’s educational environment questionnaire. Secondary data consisted of five categorized scores from clinical skill examination during preclinic; clinical posting GPA; and National OSCE’s scores. We conducted three different analyses: Spearman correlation test to measure the correlation of clinical skills examination scores to National OSCE’s scores; Pearson correlation test to measure the correlation of clinical posting GPA to OSCE’s scores; and correlation of clinical posting’s questionnaire to OSCE’s scores. Results: Clinical skills examination score was weakly correlated with OSCE’s score (r= 0,189, p< 0,05). Clinical posting GPA was also correlated with OSCE’s score (r= 0,417, p<0,001). But, there was no correlation of clinical posting’s educational environment with OSCE’s score (p>0,05).Conclusions: There is a correlation between clinical skills examination scores and academic achievement during clinical posting with OSCE’s score. But, there is no correlation between clinical posting’s educational environment with OSCE’s score.

Abstract

Introduction Student-centered learning (SCL) is based on students' needs, capacities, and other characteristics, making the method more personalized. This study aimed to analyze new questionnaires to categorize 4th-semester medical faculty students based on their characteristics. Understanding these characteristics could make the teaching and learning process more effective, potentially reducing the number of students retaking exams. Material and Methods: Subjects were 4th semester students who agreed to enroll and self-fulfilled the questionnaire. High achievers are defined as high expectations and consistent high performance (GPAs). Validity and reliability of each item were analyzed by statistical calculations accordingly. GPA in the next semester was used as threshold to confirm the participant's categorization. Results: The study commenced in March 2022, with 107 participants with Grade Point Averages (GPAs) available. The study demonstrated that the questionnaires had high validity and reliability (p-value < 0.005; Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Cronbach alpha). Among the participants, 3 (2.8%) were classified as high achievers, while 3 (28%) were categorized as low achievers. Notably, 44.86% of participants reported their passions as unrelated to medicine, while 5.61% were uncertain of their passions. Regarding vocation, 8.2% cited parental influence, and 10.3% felt their educational progress was not within their control. Conclusion: The questionnaires had high validity and reliability in item analysis. There were 2,8% of participants predicted as High Achievers and Low Achievers. Refinements of items and score presentation are needed. Follow-up activities should be given to the low achievers to prevent becoming retakers.

Abstract

Introduction: Independent learning capacity is an essential skill that students must possess in order to face educational challenges. However, students' difficulties in recognizing their potential, managing their study time, and designing independent learning strategies in high school can impact their readiness to enter higher education, which places greater emphasis on adult learning. This Community Service Program (PkM) focuses on developing self-directed learning (SDL) skills. Method: This activity was carried out at SMAIT Al Uswah Surabaya, involving 113 11th grade students and 11th grade teachers. The activity methods included: 1) Socialization and discussion with teachers and students, 2) Training in independent learning skills and SDL-Readiness measurement for students, 3) Development of SDL Modules, 4) Monitoring and Evaluation. Results: The evaluation results showed that SMAIT Al Uswah Surabaya students had a high readiness to apply independent learning skills, with a Mean SDL-Readiness of 114.36 (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.917). Students were also able to learn to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. Digital distractions from social media and a lack of reflective habits were identified as challenges to the application of independent learning. Conclusion: Students have strong potential to become independent learners. Self-reflection skills are necessary to manage the independent learning process effectively. Teachers, as facilitators, play an important role in creating a reflective, collaborative learning environment that supports student autonomy.
