Abstract

Abstract Science literacy in early childhood is essential for building scientific understanding and skills that will continue throughout life. This article discusses the use of project learning utilizing loose part media as an effective method to improve children's science literacy. Loose parts, which include a variety of natural and artificial materials that are flexible in their use, provide opportunities for children to be creative and explore science concepts directly. This study uses the Action Research method, this study involves teachers directly in improving classroom learning practices. This study was conducted at TK Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 27 Depok. Data collection techniques were carried out through triangulation (interviews, observation and documentation). The technique used is purposive sampling through project learning, children are involved in the process of identifying problems, planning, data collection, analysis, and presentation of results. This approach encourages critical thinking skills, collaboration, and increases curiosity and creativity. The resulting data is processed using the Miles & Huberman Interactive Model. The results of the implementation of this method show an increase in children's understanding of science concepts and practical skills. Thus, loose parts-based project learning has proven to be an effective means to support science literacy in early childhood. Abstract

Introduction Student-centered learning (SCL) is based on students' needs, capacities, and other characteristics, making the method more personalized. This study aimed to analyze new questionnaires to categorize 4th-semester medical faculty students based on their characteristics. Understanding these characteristics could make the teaching and learning process more effective, potentially reducing the number of students retaking exams. Material and Methods: Subjects were 4th semester students who agreed to enroll and self-fulfilled the questionnaire. High achievers are defined as high expectations and consistent high performance (GPAs). Validity and reliability of each item were analyzed by statistical calculations accordingly. GPA in the next semester was used as threshold to confirm the participant's categorization. Results: The study commenced in March 2022, with 107 participants with Grade Point Averages (GPAs) available. The study demonstrated that the questionnaires had high validity and reliability (p-value < 0.005; Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Cronbach alpha). Among the participants, 3 (2.8%) were classified as high achievers, while 3 (28%) were categorized as low achievers. Notably, 44.86% of participants reported their passions as unrelated to medicine, while 5.61% were uncertain of their passions. Regarding vocation, 8.2% cited parental influence, and 10.3% felt their educational progress was not within their control. Conclusion: The questionnaires had high validity and reliability in item analysis. There were 2,8% of participants predicted as High Achievers and Low Achievers. Refinements of items and score presentation are needed. Follow-up activities should be given to the low achievers to prevent becoming retakers.

Abstract

Early childhood education provides services in developing and facilitating children's growth and development in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. Teachers are required to develop these services in the form of fun learning activities according to the child's age and level of development. Scientific literacy is one of the abilities that must be developed in early childhood. However, based on the results of field surveys through interviews with early childhood teachers from several kindergartens in Depok City, it shows that teachers' abilities in designing science based learning activities are still limited to simple science experiment activities. Teachers have not optimally used the surrounding environment as a learning resource and medium. Based on the problems found, this research aims to analyze teachers' abilities in designing fun science play activities. Researchers used literature studies to determine the role of teachers in introducing science content through fun play. A qualitative descriptive analysis method was used to describe the results of this research. The research results obtained show that the teacher's ability to introduce science content through fun activities will make it easier for children to understand science content. The better teachers understand science content and develop it in the form of fun play activities, the easier it will be for children to have an understanding of science and meaningful experiences.
