Abstract

Increasing aging population causes an increased prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia that is associated with memory decline. Developing strategies for the prevention and therapy of age-related dementia is important to reduce the burden of treatment costs. Physical exercise is known to prevent cognitive decline and improve cognitive abilities. Physical exercise with moderate intensity for at least 150 minutes/week or 30 minutes/day for 5 days can reduce the incidence of degenerative diseases in the elderly. Thus, physical exercise appears as a simple, inexpensive, and affordable non-pharmacological therapy for most people. The processes of neurogenesis and neuronal survival involve the role of neurotrophic factors including BDNF, IGF-1 and VEGF, which are the three main neurotrophic factors that are known to increase after exercise. Many publications discuss about these neurotrophic factors, but their mechanism of signals and changes related to aging and exercise have not been completely studied. The purpose of this review is to discuss the mechanism of signals and changes of neurotrophic factors (focuses on BDNF, IGF-1, and VEGF) related to aging and exercise.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus has now become a major problem in non-communicable diseases whose prevalence continues to increase. Lack of family independence and client non-compliance with the diet program greatly affects blood sugar levels. This study needs to evaluate the effectiveness of family empowerment towards diet compliance and family independence in caring for family members with diabetes mellitus. A systematic review searched five electronic databases (Scopus, sciencedirect, pubmed, research gate, and google scholar) with the last ten years (2011-2021). The quality of the articles used in this study was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Guideline. The prism protocol is also used to review each journal. We found 15 studies out of a total of 5,865 studies that discussed family empowerment in increasing family independence and dietary adherence in family members suffering from diabetes mellitus. Family empowerment is one method that is quite effective in increasing family independence and adherence to diet programs. There are six articles (40%) that state that planned behavior theory is effective in increasing family independence and dietary adherence to family members suffering from diabetes mellitus. From all the articles analyzed, there are several effective theories to empower families to change the behavior of family independence and individual diet compliance, namely the theory of planned behavior. However, this study is not strong enough to provide an assessment that family empowerment based on the theory of planned behavior and empowerment is the best way to increase independence, therefore further research is needed.

Abstract

A single Memory impairment substantially reduces the quality of life in the elderly. It is associated with thealteration of neurotrophic (NT) factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glutamatereceptor N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). Exercise is often used to reduce cognitive impairment. Previousstudies show that the benefits of aerobic exercises on such impairments are correlated with increasing BDNFand preventing the production of NMDA. However, some results remain controversial. Thus, the associationbetween exercise and Memory was addressed by examining increases in BDNF and the reduction of NMDAin ageing rats. The study used a randomized, post-test-only controlled group of 30 male one-year-old ageingRattus norvegicus divided into three groups, namely, K0 (control) and K1 and K2 (aerobic swimmingexercise). K1 and K2 animals differed in the frequency of exercise, which is three and four sessions perweek, respectively. Memory was assessed using Y-maze performance. BDNF and NMDA were analyzedusing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. A significant improvement in memory function and reductionin the NMDA level were observed in K1 and K2 group rats (p = 0.001; p = 0.041). No significant impact onthe BDNF levels was observed (p = 0.387). Swimming may boost Memory by reducing the NMDA levelbut not by increasing BDNF. Swimming is a promising method for preventing or delaying memory loss indegenerative brain diseases. Further investigation is needed to fully understand underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

Indonesia’s swimming achievements are still far from that of other countries. Among other things, at the 2018Asian Games, Indonesia did not succeed in getting a single medal. If not improved, Indonesia’s swimmingperformance will get worse. One of the innovations is to identify the physical abilities and physiologicalresponses of an athlete through a physical loading test. This study aims to analyze the differences in acutephysiological responses between short and middle distance swimming athletes through continuous andinterval high intensity physical test. The sample of males aged 14-18 years consisted of the short distance(n=12) and middle distance (n=12) swimmers. Participants did a high intensity physical test with anergocycle for 21 minutes with a 7-minute warm-up and 3-minute cool down, intervally, and without restingfor continuous test. The variables studied included resting pulse rate, blood lactate, leg and shoulder musclestrength, arm andleg power. Data collected inbefore (pre) and after(post) physical test. The results showedthat the short distance swimmers had greater increase inlactate level and pulse rate in both physical tests. The leg power decreased significantly in the short distance swimmer when performed continue physical test, whereas the middle distance swimmer when performed interval physical test. The conclusion of this studywas to differ the leg power as acute physiology response for swimmers is more appropriate using continuousor interval high intensity physical test. Based on these results, training program for swimmer type can bedeveloped. However, further research is still needed to enhance the swimmers performance.

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of symptoms in reproductive women that appear on the 7-14 days before menstruation, such as physical, psychological, and behavioral disorders. Symptoms that often occur include excessive anxiety, irritability, breast pain, increased or decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, acne, lumbago and back pain which can reduce productivity. Some experts say that PMS occur due to decreased serotonin levels caused by low physical activity, less or excess BMI, and hypertension. This research aims to analyze the relationship between PMS with physical activity, BMI, and hypertension in women 18-40 years old. This research was an observational analytic study with a cross sectional approach. The total sample was 54 reproductive women in Tuban District according to the inclusion criteria and using purposive sampling. Chi square statistical test was used to determine the significant level of data obtained level of significant α=0,05. After the chi square test was carried out, it was obtained physical activity with ρ = 0,012, BMI with ρ = 0,002, and hypertension with ρ = 0,003. This means there are relationship between physical activity, BMI, and hypertension with PMS. The conclusion is habits in proper and routine physical activity, normal BMI, and no history of hypertension can reduce the PMS complaints.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the difference between the NLR and serum syndecan-1 level at the first, sixth, and twenty-fourth hours with the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) and non-AKI in sepsis. We observed thirty-one adult sepsis patients who admitted to the emergency room and ICU of Dr.Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia from March 30, 2020, to July 5, 2020 (fourmonth),and differentiated into two groups, AKI group (n=14) and non-AKI group (n=17). All septicpatients have been given the standard treatment based on Survival Sepsis Campaign 2018. The resultsshowed that the NLR at 1st-hours, 6th-hours, and 24th-hours in the non-AKI group were lower thanthose in the AKI group (1st: 15.9±2.6 vs 33.0±11.3; 6th: 14.2±1.8 vs 19.3±3.8; and 24th: 11.6±1.3 vs19.9±3.8) (p <0.00). Almost NLR at every groups based on serial hours were decreasing, except in theAKI group, the NLR at the 24th-hour group was higher than the NLR at 6-hour group, but still lowerthan the NLR at 1st-hours. Serum syndecan-1 levels were lower in the non-AKI group than in theAKI group, at 1st, 6th, and 24th-hours, (1st: 532.5±72.0 ng/mL vs 597.2±85.8 ng/mL; 6th: 557.6±71.6ng/mL vs 612.0±73.9 ng/mL; and 24th: 548.4±76.6 ng/mL vs 586.4±84.6 ng/mL) (p <0.05). It canbe concluded that the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and serum syndecan-1 levels at 1st, 6th,and 24th hours is higher in the AKI compared to non-AKI groups in sepsis. Hence, NLR and serumsyndecan-1 have a potential biomarkers for sepsis-induced AKI.
