Abstract

Abstract

Kepuh (Sterculiafoetida L.) is a traditional medicinal plant that is a source of secondary metabolites, also known for its phenolic content as an antioxidant and antibacterial.   The kepuh plant has been scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. The preparation of this literature review aims to provide information on the efficacy of the kepuh plant as an antioxidant. The methods used to test the antioxidant activity of kepuh are DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2-Azinobis-3-ethyl benzhothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid). Antioxidant activity is determined from the IC50 value. Where, the lower the IC50 value, the stronger the antioxidant activity of a sample.  The conclusion from this literature search is that kepuh is a plant that has strong antioxidant activity.

Abstract

The current condition of Indonesia can be said to be facing a triple burden. Based on research results from the Central Statistics Agency, the percentage of the population, especially the population of West Java, who had health complaints during the last month in 2022 showed an increase compared to the previous year (2021), this is of course related to the quality of public health. The problem currently faced by partners is the lack of information and education regarding the processing of nutritious plants. So far, the crops obtained have been used in simple ways, eaten directly as fresh vegetables or processed as food. This time the community service program was carried out in Cibiru Wetan Village, Cileunyi District, Bandung Regency. Activities include providing education regarding efficacious herbal plants and tutorials on making herbal tea as an effort to improve the quality of health. From the results of implementing this community service activity, the residents of Cibiru Wetan Village, Cileunyi District, Bandung Regency have understood the ingredients that can be used in an effort to improve the quality of health and one way of processing them

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that are capable of neutralizing free radicals. One plant with potential antioxidant properties is Peperomia pellucida. Objective: This study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content of extracts of the leaves and stems of Peperomia pellucida. Methods: Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH method, while the total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Extraction was performed via reflux using three different solvents: n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Results: The highest antioxidant activity was found in the ethanol extract of the leaves, with an IC50 value of 36.85 µg/mL, and in the stems, with an IC50 value of 71.28 µg/mL. The highest total phenolic content in the ethanol extract of the leaves was 14.46 mg GAE/g and that in the stems was 12.82 mg GAE/g. The highest total flavonoid content in the ethanol extract of the leaves was 12.12 mg QE/g and that in the stems was 10.49 mg QE/g. Conclusion: The results indicated that the ethanol extract of Peperomia pellucida leaves exhibited very strong antioxidant activity. Keywords: antioxidants, DPPH, phenolic, flavonoids, suruhan Plants

Abstract

The growing demand for convenient and palatable delivery systems for herbal medicines has significantly increased the interest in herbal effervescent formulations as an alternative to conventional dosage forms. Effervescent dosage forms offer rapid dissolution and the potential for enhanced absorption while masking unpleasant tastes often associated with herbal extracts. However, the successful formulation of herbal effervescent tablets presents unique challenges, including managing the complex physicochemical properties of herbal extracts, ensuring their stability and antioxidant activity within the effervescent matrix, and optimizing taste without compromising efficacy. Various studies have explored the formulation of effervescent tablets from diverse herbal sources like Kelakai root, Kaempferia galanga, and red ginger, employing different formulation methods, excipients like binders, lubricants, and sweeteners, and optimization techniques to achieve desired physical attributes and dissolution profiles. Given the expanding research in this area and the inherent complexities of herbal effervescent formulation, a comprehensive review is crucial to synthesize current knowledge, address existing challenges, and provide a roadmap for future research aimed at designing more effective and patient-friendly herbal effervescent products with improved stability, palatability, and bioavailability.

Abstract

Hypertension remains one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases worldwide and is increasingly becoming a health burden in Indonesian communities. Limited knowledge about hypertension and the lack of access to preventive strategies contribute to its high incidence in rural areas. This community empowerment program was conducted to improve public understanding of hypertension and to provide practical training on the production of a herbal tea formulation, known as Tensi Tea, using locally available ingredients such as breadfruit leaves, bay leaves, and cinnamon. The activity took place in Mandalawangi Village and involved community members, local health cadres, and students. The program was implemented in several stages, including educational sessions on hypertension prevention, interactive discussions, and hands-on training in harvesting, processing, and packaging herbal ingredients into tea bags. Participants were actively engaged, demonstrated high enthusiasm, and were able to produce the herbal tea product independently by the end of the training. The results showed an increase in community knowledge regarding risk factors and prevention of hypertension, as well as enhanced skills in producing a simple herbal preparation that has the potential to support both health promotion and local economic opportunities. In conclusion, education on hypertension prevention, accompanied by training on herbal tea, is an effective strategy to empower communities. It is recommended that similar programs be expanded to other rural areas and supported by local health services to ensure sustainability.
