Abstract

Corn cobs (Zea mays L.) can be used as sunscreen because it contains phenolic compounds. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of the physical and chemical properties of sunscreen lotion preparations of corncob ethanol extract and the formula and concentration that had the highest effectiveness in the value of Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The lotion was chosen because it is a topical preparation that is often used by the community. Corn cob powder was extracted by the maceration method. The results were formulated with extract concentrations, formulation I (5%), formulation II (10%), and formulation III (15%). The three formulas were tested for organoleptic, pH test, homogeneity, and lotion type. The resulting data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that all formulas with varying concentrations of extracts had good physicochemical characteristics during storage based on the results of pH, homogeneity, organoleptic, and emulsion-type tests. Corncob ethanol extract sunscreen lotion in Formula 1 (5%) has an SPF value of 2 (UV-A rays) and an SPF value of 7 (UV-B rays). Formula 2 (10%) has an SPF value of 2,3 (UV-A rays) and has an SPF value of 9 (UV-B rays) and Formula 3 (15%) has an SPF value of 3 (UV-A rays) and has a value of SPF 12 (UV-B Rays).

Abstract

Green-bean filling bread is made from wheat flour and water and fermented with yeast. The presence of carbohydrates and sugar in bread causes mold to grow. This examination aims to determine the presence or absence of fungus on green bean sandwiches according to the SNI standard with no more than 104 microbial ingredients. The medium used in this examination is Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) which has been added with 0.1% chloramphenicol. This examination uses an experimental method (parametric experiment). The sample in this examination is green bean stuffed bread traded in the Sei Sikambing market in Medan, the number of samples examined is 4 types from 2 shophouses in the Sei Sikambing market, Medan in 2015. The results of the examination showed the presence of fungal growth in all samples so the sample does not meet the requirements of SNI. To consume bread, you should pay attention to the condition of the bread at the time of buying.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease whose prevalence is increasing from year to year. This increase was accompanied by an increase in the cost of treatment and the number of complications. The use of traditional medicine is an alternative for the community to control blood sugar levels (KGD). Considering that synthetic drugs have various side effects, one of the medicinal plants used as traditional medicine is aloe vera leaf and mother-in-law's tongue leaf which contain flavonoid compounds, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and steroids/triterpenoids. The purpose of this study was to determine the antidiabetic activity of aloe vera leaf extract and mother-in-law's tongue and to compare the activities of the two. The results of the analysis of the glucose tolerance ANOVA test showed a significant difference in the percentage reduction at 60, 90, and 120 minutes for all treatment preparations. The alloxan induction test showed a significant difference in the percentage decrease from days 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Aloe Vera Leaf Ethanol Extract (EEDLB) and LidahMertua Leaf Ethanol Extract (EEDLM) with each dose of 150 and 200 mg/kg BW and the combination of the two gave antidiabetic activity against mice as well as differences in effectiveness between samples of aloe vera leaf and LidahMertua leaf as well as a single dose with a combination.

Abstract

Bananas are the most consumed fruit by the people of Indonesia. This fruit has many health benefits including improving digestion, treating anemia, healthy bones, and improving nerve function. The nutritional content contained in bananas is carbohydrates, sugar, dietary fiber, fat, protein, vitamins, and minerals such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. This study aims to determine the sodium content in golden bananas. The assay was carried out using an air-acetylene flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Quantitative analysis of sodium was carried out at a wavelength of 589.6 nm. The results of the study concluded that the sodium content of golden bananas was 1.8647 mg/100g. The results of the relative standard deviation test are 15% and have good precision because the results obtained for analytes with levels of parts per million are not more than 16% (Harmita, 2004).
