Abstract

The research aims to know the kinds of fungi that grow on palm trunk after logging in the process of rejuvnation of palm. The research was conducted in Kebun Percobaan Tambunan A Universitas Sumatra Utara. Fungi isolated and identified in Microbiology Laboratory of the Department of Biology Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra. The research was conducted from September 2011 until November 2011. The results obtained, four types of fungi found on oil palm trunks that have been process of rejuvnation, wich is taken from four palm  as a sample. for each palm trunk, made a division at the base of the trunk, middle, and end of the trunk. From the results of isolation obtained the Arthrinium phaespermum, Chaetomium brasiliense, Penicillium simplicissimum and Ulocladium botrytis as a result of identification from the sample. The type of fungi that most identified from the palm trunk is a type of fungi Arthrinium phaeospermumKey words : Elaeis guineensis Jacq, Fungi, Palm trunks

Abstract

The research of the diversity of macroscopic fungi in Education Forest of University of North Sumatra has never been reported. The research has been conducted at altitude: < 1000 m above sea level; 1000 – 1500 m above sea level; and ≥ 1500 m above sea level, on five different trail on each altitude category. The length of observation trail is 100 m. The first trail on each altitude category is determined with purpossive sampling method, then the next trail was determined with systematic sampling method. The observation and the collection of species has done exploratively in the plot sampling, size 20 m x 20 m. The results showed that was found 45 species of macroscopic fungi which consist of 2 divisions, 4 classes, 10 orders, and 19 families, where numbers of species of macroscopic fungi was found on each of altitude category consecutively 30 species; 42 species; and 32 species. The macroscopic fungi was found commonly living on the decayed wood and litter, and then a part of living on the living wood. Abstract

The aim of this research were to know the process and tecnique of mangrove nursery, the level of financial feasibility of mangrove nursery and to knew the development strategy of mangrove nursery business. The method of data collecting of this research was interview and observation. The evaluation of financial analysis was done by production cost and revenue analysis. Then was followed by analysis of R/C ratio and Break Event Poin (BEP), and the development strategy analysis was used SWOT analysis. The result show that the techniques of nursery was done by tradisional way. The nursery stage area: selection of place, nursery place, fruit selection, manufacture of seedlings and maintenance of seedling. The business of mangrove nursery feasible to run due to the R/C ratio more than one. The R/C ratio for R. Stylosa, R. Apiculata, Soneratia, Bruguiera sp. Were 1,2642, R. Mucronata was 2,4737 and A. Marina was 1,1939. Based on the SWOT analysis, the current position of the mangrove nursery rides was in quadrant III. It showed that business of mangrove nursery was many threat, but had a great opportunity to develop. Keywords: Mangrove, nursery, financial analysis, SWOT

Abstract

Research on "Analysis of the Trees and Nest Characteristics of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Bukit Lawang Langkat District" was conducted in July until September 2012 at Pusat Pengamatan Orangutan Sumatera (PPOS) in Bukit Lawang, Bahorok, Langkat District. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the nest tree and Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) based on age level and gender. Research method used line transect and focal animal sampling. Some characteristics of the Orangutans trees most often found in meranti trees (Shorea sp.) as Orangutans nest and feed, with hight 20-25 m, diameter 20-30 cm, branch pattern is adjacent and type of canofy is spherical, nest high 16-25 m. The position of the nest is most commonly found nesting in position III and nest type is B. There are differences and similarities between Orangutan who were subjected to experiments in determining the type of nest trees, nest trees high, nest trees diameter, nest high and position of nest. Keyword: Nest, Pongo abelii, Shorea sp., Sumateran Orangutans Trees and nest characteristic. Abstract

Indonesia's tropical forests is one of the richest in natural resources of orchids. North Sumatra is a suitable place for growing orchids. This study aims to inventory the orchids based on altitude in Siranggas Wildlife Kecupak I Village, Pergetteng-getteng Sengkut Subdistrick, Pakpak Bharat. Plots were determined by purposive sampling. The Observation of vegetation used line plot transect which divided in 3 locations with different altitude interval : 800 – 900 meter above sea level (m asl), 1.000 – 1.100 m asl and  1.200 – 1.300 m asl, measuring plot 20 m x 100 m, divided in to 5 subplots measuring 20 m x 20 m. The result found 54 species of orchids at Siranggas Wildlife from 21 genus, which there were 15 species of terrestrial orchids, 37 species of epiphytic orchids and 2 species os saprophyte. The highest of important value index (IVI) was 41,722% on Dendrobium tertraedre and the lowest was 0,884% on Vanilla sp. 1, Vanilla sp. 3 and Phaius sp 1.
