Abstract

Jawi script is Arabic/hijaiyah letters with 6 additional letters as local modifications which -when read or pronounced- form Malay words/sentences. This Jawi script is proof of the influence of Islam in the archipelago. This study is historical research employing literature analysis examining the Jawi script collection within the digital library provided by the Endangered Archives Program (EAP) Riau manuscripts: The Gateway to The Malay Intellectual World (EAP153). The data obtained was then analyzed qualitatively through historiography descriptive analysis. The data was then discussed by comparing with other literacy sources such as journals, books and internet sources. Malay manuscripts stored in the British Library EAP library & Linggam Cahaya Library consist of 454 manuscripts including 65 (14%) written in Dutch, 30 (6.6%) written in Indonesian, 3 (0.7%) written in Arabic, 2 (2) 0.4%) written in English and 353 Jawi manuscripts (78%) and 118 bi-lingual literature collections. Based on the Jawi manuscripts provided in the EAP British Library collection and that of Linggam Cahaya Library, it can be understood that the use of Jawi writing provides an overview of the socio-cultural conditions of Malay at the time. It is also revealed that there had been ups and downs in the use of Jawi script. In the 19th century Jawi writing was the government official script, the most mastered script by the community, a sign of identity and a resistance symbol against colonialism. The prestige of Jawi script began to decline since school system spread and the use of Latin script in the schooling world started as the impact of the ethical politics of 1901.

Abstract

Islam is rahmatan Lil 'Alamin, the universal religion. It means that its mission and teachings are not only for one group or country but all men. However, the meaning of the universality of Islam among Muslims is not uniform. Some group defines that the teachings of Islam brought by the Prophet Muhammad based Arabic culture are final, so this must be taken as granted as they are. Some groups also interpret the universality of Islamic teachings as being not limited to time and place. Hence it can blend into any culture. The first group has the ambition to uniform all Islamic cultural-based into one, as practiced by the Prophet Muhammad. They don't accept any particularity. This group is called fundamentalist. However, the second group considers that Islam is a value that can adapt to all existing cultures. Islam lies in its value, not its physical form. This group is called the substantive group. However, apart from both, another group reckons some Islamic value is fundamental and can not adjust to cultures.

Abstract

The concept of kesempitan jiwa (constriction of the soul) refers to a state of discomfort, anxiety, sadness, or emotional and spiritual suffering that one might experience. This constriction fundamentally originates from within the heart, where it induces a sense of suffering. The soul, in this context, is understood as encompassing the entirety of a person's inner life, including feelings, thoughts, imagination, and more. This study employs a qualitative approach, focusing on literature analysis from sources such as books, journals, papers, and other writings. It is a type of library research. This research finds, firstly, that the constriction of the soul in the Qur'an is associated with the term dhayq, which refers to a state where the heart feels tight due to excessive sadness, fear, worry, and anxiety over matters that are difficult to accept. Secondly, dhayq arises from various causes, such as arrogance within oneself, excessive worry about something, and fear that originates from within a person, disturbing their inner peace. According to the Qur'an, overcoming this constriction of the soul can be achieved through patience, seeking help from Allah, and avoiding negative assumptions. Thirdly, some scholars argue that humans are created with a tendency toward restlessness and anxiety, which is reflected in their behavior.

Abstract

Abstract

This research, titled “Islamic Universalism and Local Islam,” aims to analyze the relationship between the universal values of Islam and the expressions of local Islam that develop within the cultural context of society. The main focus of this study is to understand how Islam, as a universal religion, interacts with local cultures without losing its core principles such as tawhid (monotheism), justice, equality, and rahmah (compassion). The research method used is library research with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through the analysis of academic literature, scholarly journal articles, and other relevant scientific works. The analysis technique employed is content analysis, used to examine the relationship between universal Islamic values and their manifestations in local religious traditions. The findings indicate that Islamic universalism and local Islam are not opposing concepts but rather complementary ones. Islamic universalism provides an inclusive ethical and spiritual foundation, while local Islam reflects the contextual application of Islamic teachings within specific cultural settings. The integration of both creates a form of religiosity that is moderate, adaptive, and harmonious, making it relevant to the pluralistic society of the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the development of Malay Islam and Islam Nusantara by analyzing its historical, cultural, and social dimensions within the Southeast Asian context. The research employs a qualitative approach based on a literature review, analyzing academic books, journal articles, and relevant scholarly sources related to Islamization and local Islamic dynamics. The findings indicate that Islam developed in the Malay–Nusantara region through peaceful mechanisms, particularly trade, Sufi-based da‘wah, and sustained social interaction. This process not only facilitated the emergence of early Islamic centers but also encouraged cultural acculturation between Islamic teachings and local traditions. Culturally, this interaction produced moderate, adaptive, and contextual forms of religious expression, reflected in local customs, language, and Islamic literacy traditions. Socially, Islam played a significant role in shaping governance structures, educational institutions, and social cohesion from the pre-colonial period to the modern era. Overall, this study confirms that Malay Islam and Islam Nusantara represent a creative interaction between Islamic values and local culture, resulting in a distinctive, inclusive, and socially relevant form of Islam.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of madrasas during the Golden Age of Islam and compare them with the condition of contemporary madrasas. The research method used is library research with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from books on the history of Islamic education, scientific journal articles, research reports, and official documents on modern madrasas. Content analysis was employed to examine the characteristics of classical madrasas, while comparative analysis was used to compare them with present-day madrasas. The results show that madrasas in the Islamic Golden Age flourished due to the integration of religious and rational sciences, strong support through waqf, the presence of scholar-scientists as educators, and an academic culture open to dialogue and research. Meanwhile, modern madrasas have experienced significant progress in curriculum development and scientific integration, but still face challenges such as limited facilities, teacher competency gaps, and learning methods that are not yet fully innovative. The discussion emphasizes the importance of revitalizing the values of classical madrasas through strengthening research, integrating knowledge, and modernizing pedagogy so that madrasas can compete globally without losing their Islamic identity
