The Influence of Javanese Accent toward the Students’ English Consonant Pronunciation at English Education Study Program of Universitas Peradaban: Array Purwaningsih, Resti; Nurdiawati, Dede

Abstract

The aims of this study are to identify the Javanese students’ pronunciation of English consonant, to find out the influence of Javanese accent toward English consonant pronunciation, and to describe the difficulties faced and the solutions on Javanese students’ English consonant pronunciation. The writers use descriptive qualitative method. The writers start from test by collecting the data using pronunciation accent test material to find out how the Javanese students pronounce English consonant and do it through a record player. Next, the writers conduct interview to the Javanese students and the lecturer of Pronunciation course. Finally, based on the result of pronunciation test and interview, it can be concluded that the Javanese accent used by the Javanese students of English education study program at Universitas Peradaban is Banyumas accent. There are several problems on Javanese students’ English pronunciation, namely: the sound /p/ which is substituted with the sound /f/, the sound /ʒ/ which is substituted with the sound /ʃ/, the sound /ɵ/ which is substituted with the sound /t/, and there are five consonants which are influenced by Javanese accent, namely: consonant /b/, /d/, /g/, /dʒ/, and /ð/. In consonant /b/, there are 10% Javanese students who are influenced by their Javanese accent. It should be pronounced bilabial plosive, but Javanese students pronounce bilabial non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. 60% in consonant /d/, it should be pronounced voiced alveolar plosive consonant, but it is pronounced apico-dental non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. 90% in consonant /g/, it should be pronounced voiced velar plosive, but Javanese students pronounce dorso-velar non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. 55% in consonant /dʒ/, it should be pronounced voiced palate-alveolar affricative, but it is pronounced medio-palatal non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. The last 10% in consonant /ð/, it should be pronounce voiced dental fricative, but Javanese students pronounce apico-dental non continuant. It is identified by (h) aspirated. The difficulty faced on the students’ English consonant pronunciation is that their English pronunciation is still influenced by Javanese accent. To overcome their difficulty, they practice to pronounce English consonant every day, listen to the English song and then imitate it, watch English movies, and read some English books and then try to pronounce the words that they read.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to identify the types of idiom found in the album “Purpose – Justin Bieber” and to analyse the strategies used in idiom translation. The source of data is the album of “Purpose – Justin Bieber”. There are eighteen song lyrics in the album and their Indonesian translation. In this study, the writers identify the types of idiom by using Palmer’s theory (1976) and analyse the strategies used in idiom translation by using Baker’s theory (1992). The writers use descriptive qualitative design and Simak Bebas Libat Cakap as the technique of data collection. The result of data analysis in idiom translation strategies found in 9 songs lyric album. From the identification of idiom, the writers found 23 idioms in the song lyric album consisted of three types, they were phrasal verb, partial idiom, and prepositional verb. The result of data analysis shows that there are three types of idiom found namely phrasal verb, partial idiom, and prepositional idiom. Moreover, there are three strategies found in idiom translation, which are similar meaning and form, similar meaning and dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase.

Abstract

Teaching English for disability or special needs students is a challenge requires specific method or strategy and needs participation of all parties within the school. Deafness is one kind of physical disability. Teaching English to deaf student is so hard. The research is aimed at describing teacher’s strategy in teaching English for deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi. Qualitative approach is used in this research. Techniques of data collection used are observation, interview, and documentation (image). To analyse the data obtained, the writers use data collection technique, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of this study shows that the teacher emphasizes on conducting effective lesson by repeating the material and checking students’ understanding periodically, individualizing instructional practices in measure each student’s ability and students’ sitting position as the classroom accommodation as her strategy for teaching deaf students. She uses Total Physical Response, Grammar Translation Method as the English language development strategies in teaching English for deaf students combined with oral speech and sign language used, SIBI. It can be concluded that the goal of teaching English by using those strategies can be achieved. Teaching English to deaf students at SLB Manunggal Slawi focuses on reading and writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to identify various grammatical errors based on Linguistic Category Taxonomy and Surface Strategy Taxonomy, for their tendency of occurrence in the texts and to find out various kinds of student problems when writing text in English. This study is qualitative-quantitative research with an instrument in descriptive text written test essays and questionnaires from the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Purwokerto. Then, the texts are analyzed based on Dulay’s theory. From the results in text analysis, the writers find 4 types of grammatical errors by Dulay’s theory. The 4 types of errors are Omission (54.9%), Misordering (23.75%), Misformation (15.93%), and Addition (6.07%), with the total errors is 182 errors. The problems faced by students are low grammar mastery, low vocabulary mastery, low in composing sentences, and sentence pattern still influenced by mother tongue. As a result, the students still write text using the original or Indonesian sentence structure.

Abstract

The study is to analyze Expansion Relation on clause complex of Nadiem Makarim’s dialogue. The source of data is utterances of Nadiem Makarim in Singapore Summit 2020. The dialogue talks about education problem in that pandemic era of Covid-19. In this study, the writers analyze Elaboration, Extension and Enhancement which belong to Expansion. The writers apply Functional Grammar theory from Linda Gerot and Peter Wignell (1994). Based on characteristics of this study, the writers implement descriptive qualitative method, Simak Bebas Libat Cakap, and Teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung. The writers conduct six steps to analyze the data. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that there are 68 clause complexes. It is found out 95 times of Elaboration, 91 times of Extension and 51 times of Enhancement. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the identification of Expansion is dominated by Elaboration.

Abstract

The problems that are often faced by students in mastering English vocabulary is difficulty in memorizing the words. Quiz-quiz trade game is one of the techniques that offers the students to memorize vocabulary easily. Thus, by using quiz–quiz trade game can help the fourth-grade students to improve their vocabulary mastery. The aim of this research is to find out whether using quiz–quiz trade game is effective or not to improve students’ vocabulary mastery on the fourth-grade students. This research uses a true experimental study. This research collects the data from observation, documentation, and test. T-test is used to test the hypothesis. The result of t-test is to 3,956 > ttable 1,697, in other words Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The writers conclude that the quiz–quiz trade game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery on the fourth-grade students of MI Ma’arif NU Banjarsari. Abstract

Communication is one way for humans to interact with other. Communication is also a way for humans to give or get information. In tourism sector, tour guides must have good communication to speak with tourist. The aim of this thesis is to describe the Interpersonal communication skill used by the tour guides in Borobudur Temple area. To answer the question, the writers uses Joseph DeVito Theory about the effectiveness of interpersonal communication. The findings show the aspect of Interpersonal communication by the tour guides in Borobudur Temple area. The aspects are openness, positiveness, supportiveness, empathy, and equality. The Interpersonal communication used by tour guides in Borobudur Temple went well and effectively, all the tour guides can apply 5 aspect of Interpersonal communication such as tell the truth, think positively, support with the tourist, have empathy with the tourist, and respect to other culture. Abstract

This study is related to the use of coordinating conjunction in mass media, especially news. This research aims to analyze the coordinating conjunctions applied in entertainment and art column on the BBC news articles in November 2023. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Therefore, the writer uses Herring’s theory (2016) to analyze coordinating conjunctions. The source of data in this this study is taken from website of BBC news articles in November 2023. In collecting the data, the writer conducts observation and documentation. The study’s result shows that there are 268 coordinating conjunctions.
