Abstract

Modal particles in Mandarin Chinese serve a crucial role in conveying meaning and interpersonal nuances in communication. Nonetheless, scholarly investigations into the pragmatic functions of the particles 啊 (a), 吧 (ba), and 呢 (ne) within social media discourse remain scarce. This study aims to elucidate the functions of these modal particles in informal interactions among Mandarin speakers, with particular emphasis on politeness strategies. Data were sourced from speech act excerpts on the social media platform Xiaohongshu (小红书), collected through purposive sampling based on relevant keyword searches. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in pragmatic theory, the analysis focused on utterance context, speaker intent, and interlocutor responses. Findings reveal that these modal particles play a pivotal role in modulating conversational tone, mitigating illocutionary force, and fostering interpersonal closeness. The study underscores an observable adaptation of modal particle usage in digital communication environments and advocates for further research into politeness mechanisms within online interactions.

Abstract

This article analyzes the strategic role of the Alipay platform in supporting China's soft diplomacy through a case study of how foreign tourists represent Chengdu's culinary culture. The formulation of the problem in these studies on the representation of culinary culture has been widely conducted in various media, but few have highlighted the role of foreign tourists as carriers of local cultural meaning, particularly on the Alipay platform. This study examines in depth how video content uploaded by foreign tourists on the Alipay platform serves as a representational space for Chengdu's culinary identity while simultaneously positioning these tourists as cultural intermediaries in cyberspace. This study uses a qualitative, descriptive-interpretive approach. This type of research is qualitative content analysis. Data from this study includes videos, captions, and comment interactions taken directly from the accounts of three creators on the Alipay platform. The study's findings demonstrate that foreign tourists' use of the Alipay platform goes beyond facilitating transactions and has transformed into a significant tool for grassroots diplomacy. Abstract

This study investigates the acculturation of Chinese culture within the architectural visual identity and religious inculturation at Santa Maria de Fatima Catholic Church and Dharma Toasebio Temple in Jakarta. It compares how both institutions sustain their ethnic identity and spiritual functions within a pluralistic urban society. The originality of this work stems from its comparative framework, contrasting internal acculturation with contextual inculturation. It specifically highlights how architectural elements act as social instruments to negotiate identity within a multicultural environment. A descriptive comparative qualitative method was employed, utilizing literature reviews, digital site observations of the two primary buildings (n=2), and visual semiotic analysis. Results indicate that Dharma Toasebio Temple reflects internal acculturation through its Tri Dharma architecture, which is characterized by red and gold color schemes and swallowtail roofs. Conversely, Santa Maria de Fatima Church appropriates the design of a Chinese aristocratic residence to contextualize the Catholic faith. These distinctions demonstrate that such visual components extend beyond mere decoration; they serve as a community strategy to maintain social cohesion and spirituality in dynamic public spaces. Consequently, the findings expand the current understanding of cultural integration within urban religious architecture. Ultimately, both sites achieve a harmonious synthesis of religious conviction and ethnic identity through Chinese cultural symbols. This integration theoretically advances visual semiotics while practically reinforcing social cohesion and interfaith tolerance in an urban setting.
