Abstract

The pandemic situation required the majority of universities to carry out online learning, including Universitas Padjadjaran. The pandemic situation tends to decrease students' probability to interact while doing academic activities. This study was conducted to prove whether loneliness can also predict the emergence of suicide ideation during pandemic Covid-19 using the R-UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Suicide Ideation Scale. The research sample was 171 active students from Universitas Padjadjaran, with 49 male participants and 122 female participants. 20.47% of participants had severe loneliness and 19.3% of participants had high level of suicide ideation. Simple regression test showed that loneliness can be used to predict 27.8% the occurrence of suicidal ideation in male participants and 30% in female participants. Further research can be done by balancing the number of male participants.

Abstract

Measuring loneliness in children and adolescents is crucial, as it is a prevalent issue that can impact their emotional and social development. Despite its importance, there are limited validated tools available to assess loneliness within the Indonesian cultural context. The Loneliness and Aloneness Scale for Children and Adolescents (LACA) is a widely used instrument for assessing feelings of loneliness and aloneness among children and adolescents. This study aimed to adapt and collect evidence of the validity of the Indonesian version of the LACA following the International Test Commission (ITC) Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests. Using the convenience sampling technique, 297 children and adolescents aged 10–18 years were selected as respondents in this study. The results show that the Indonesian version of four LACA sub-scales has good internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis shows that the four-factor model has an acceptable model fit. However, six items were omitted from the LACA loneliness measurement model for having a low contribution to loneliness. As a result, the four-factor model with fewer items shows a better fit. According to the research findings, the Indonesian version of the LACA can be used to measure loneliness and attitudes toward aloneness in the population of children and adolescents in Indonesia, with a recommendation to omit six items. The results of the tests on alternative two-factor models show that the loneliness in relationships with parents and loneliness in relationships with peers sub-scales can be used separately to measure the source of loneliness in children and adolescents in Indonesia.

Abstract

Instructional quality is a form of classroom teaching which is important to support the development of students’ abilities in class. Instructional quality has three dimensions, that is a collection of teachers’ teaching behaviors, namely classroom management, supportive climate, and cognitive activation. Measurements of instructional quality has begun to develop; however, no measurement scale has been constructed and used in Indonesia. This study discussed the adaptation of Instructional Quality Questionnaire with the aim of obtaining a measurement for instructional quality that is standardized and can be used in Indonesian population. The adaptation process carried out includes pre-condition stage, development stage and confirmation stage. A tryout of the instrument is carried out on 242 high school students. The final instructional quality scale consists of 18 items which measure all three dimensions with reliability (r=0,886) which indicates that the instrument is reliable. Collection of internal structure validity using confirmatory factor analysis shows that the validity construct of the instructional quality model is a good fit. This adaptation of instrument is expected to help the development of research related to instructional quality as an important construct in determining the increase in students’ abilities and achievements, especially in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the construction of the items that is flexible to be used in any population and context is expected to facilitate the needs of various research.

Abstract

In the transition period from high school to college, freshmen have to deal with the new environment, which makes them vulnerable to experience symptoms of mental  disorders. The aim of the current study was to examine the role of loneliness as a predictor of symptoms of mental disorders among freshmen. Using a convenience sampling, 151 first-year undergraduate students from one faculty at Universitas Padjadjaran took part in the current study. The respondents completed a self-report questionnaire consisting of WHO Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ) to assess symptoms of mental disorders and UCLA Loneliness scale to assess loneliness. The result showed that loneliness significantly predicted  symptoms of mental disorders among freshmen. Theoretical implications of these empirical findings are discussed, as are practical implications highlighting the suggestions for the university stakeholders to implement an intervention that is effective in tackling freshmen’s mental disorders such as social skill training, increasing social support, and increasing probability of social contactPada masa transisi dari sekolah menengah atas ke perkuliahan, mahasiswa harus menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungan barunya.
