Abstract

Background: Irrational use of antibiotics has various side effects to resistance. Utilization of secondary metabolites of Andaliman plant endophytic bacteria (Z. acanthopodium DC) is an alternative known to act as an antibacterial to overcome this problem. Objective: This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of the crude extract of Andaliman endophytic bacteria against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.  Methods: This research is an experimental laboratory with qualitative data collection methods. The initial stages will be the isolation of endophytic bacteria from Andaliman, the antagonist test of Andaliman endophyte isolates against E. coli and S. aureus, and the extraction of endophytic bacterial isolates using ethyl acetate as solvent. An antagonistic test of bacterial isolate extract was performed using the disc diffusion method against pathogenic bacteria E. coli and S. aureus and observed by an inhibition zone. The final stage is the minimum inhibition test of endophytic isolates by dilution method on three potential endophytic isolates. Results: The results of the extraction of isolates EAA22, EAA28, EAB5, EAB6, and EAB7 Andaliman endophytic bacteria have inhibitory activity against S.aureus, and the results of the extraction of isolates EAB5, EAB6, EAA22 have inhibitory activity against E. coli. Conclusion: Endophyte bacteria isolates from Andaliman produce antibacterial compounds against E. coli and S. aureus.

Abstract

According to World health Organization (WHO), the age group >60 years is categorized as elderly (elderly). Normally with age, a decrease in organ function will also occur naturally, one of which is in the organs of vision. So far, the community considers the decline in the function of vision in the elderly group as a normal thing to happen and does not require routine checks. Even though this condition will increase the risk of falling in the elderly and can cause other complex problems. The social institution is a place that aims to accommodate the elderly so that they can live their old age in a more quality manner, the Tresna Werdha Social Institution is one example and is under the guidance of the Social Service of Bengkulu Province which accommodates quite a number of elderly as its fostered citizens with various existing health problems, One of them is the problem of decreased visual acuity. In view of the conditions above, then community service needs to be done in this place, such as counseling, visual acuity checks and providing reading glasses to the elderly at the Tresna Werdha Bengkulu social institution. The purpose of this activity is to improve the quality of life for the elderly and reduce the risk of falling, especially for the assisted residents of the Tresna Werdha Social Institution, Bengkulu Province. The result of this activity was that 43 elderly people took part in educational activities, visual acuity checks and the provision of reading glasses which were carried out on October 2, 2022 by a community service team from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Bengkulu. From this activity, it was found that 21 elderly people (49%) received assistance in the form of reading glasses while 22 (51%) other elderly people could not receive assistance in the form of reading glasses because they had cataracts.

Abstract

Abstract

The infectious disease COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus can infect all age groups. The symptoms that arise can vary from no symptoms to severe and critical symptoms. Differences in clinical symptoms can occur due to differences in the distribution, maturation and function of the SARS-CoV-2 virus receptors. These clinical symptoms will determine the severity of COVID-19. This study aims to analyze the relationship between age and clinical symptoms and the severity of COVID-19 in Bengkulu Province in 2020. This study used an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. Samples were taken using a consecutive sampling technique and a total of 109 subjects were obtained who were COVID-19 patients in Bengkulu Province from March to December 2020. Assessment of clinical symptoms used COVID-19 epidemiological investigations. The degree of severity is determined based on the Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. The relationship between the two variables was analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between the age factor of COVID-19 patients in determining the severity of COVID-19 (p=0.000; p <0.05).
