Abstract

This research deals with the students’ achievement of speaking skills and perception towards Implementing Individual Rotation of blended learning. The writers discuss the effectiveness of blended learning implemented in the pre-test and post-test of English speaking skill achievement of the 2nd semester of English Department students of the University of Sumatera Utara and their perception of it. This research aims to find out how the Individual Rotation Model of blended learning improves students’ English speaking skill achievement using the Learn Social platform and to find out students’ perceptions after implementing blended learning. In conducting this research, the writers apply descriptive with a mixed-method (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011) analyzing the students’ achievement found in the pre-test and post-test and giving the online questionnaire to assess their perception towards blended learning. The data shows that the student's achievement in the post-test (Mean=87%) was higher than the pre-test (Mean=85%) out of 50 students. According to the data, 90% of the 42 students gave a positive response to blended learning. The result showed Individual Rotation Model improves the English speaking skill achievement especially in the components of speaking skill namely, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension, and effective to be implemented for undergraduate students in the era of industrial revolution 4.0.

Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers' perceptions of the use of Google Translate as a translation tool. The problem of this study is to explain the teachers' perception towards the use of Google Translate as a translation tool. This study uses qualitative descriptive as the research method. The data of this study uses Questionnaire and Interview. The subject is the teachers at Hikmatul Fadhillah and there are 23 teachers. The results of this research showed that teachers can get translation results quickly and easily from Google translate. Almost all teachers realize that Google translate as a translation tool could not be a good tool because the grammar of the translation results is inappropriate. Although this application has weaknesses, teachers still have a positive perception of its use. It is found that all respondents stated they had positive perceptions towards the use of Google translate as a translation tool. Furthermore, the accuracy of Google Translate makes teachers continue to learn and practice grammar while also increasing their translation skills.

Abstract

The study attempts to find out the effectiveness of an online learning platform provided by the English Department language center at Universitas Sumatera Utara regarding to the English Literature class of 2018 students’ writing skill. The thesis was conducted by analyzing the result of the questionnaire given to the students via google form. The research used the qualitative descriptive method and the indicators proposed by Slavin. Based on the questionnaire result, it showed that Learn Social online platform is effective for students’ writing skill. It is shown through the students’ feedback by answering the questionnaire where the result is positive. The indicators used in order to measure the effectiveness of the online platform are instruction, the appropriate level of instruction, incentive, and time where all four of the indicators get a positive result.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi sastra dalam mencari fakta sosial pada novel Rara Mendut dengan latar belakang tokoh Rara yang berani melakukan perlawanan, menuntut kesetaraan gender dan mengambil keputusan. Atas keberaniannya, Rara dianggap sebagai pejuang emansipasi wanita. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode hermeneutik. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik baca dan teknik catat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fakta sosial yang melatarbelakangi tokoh Rara adalah lingkungan, stratifikasi sosial, dan ekonomi. Fakta lingkungan adalah iklim dan geografis daerah pesisir atau pantai yang menjadi tempat tinggal Rara. Fakta stratifikasi sosial dapat dilihat dari tokoh Rara yang hanya seorang nelayan. Fakta ekonomi masyarakat pantai jelas tergambar dalam novel Rara Mendut yang tergolong memiliki ekonomi lemah. Ketiga fakta sosial tersebut mampu menggambarkan tokoh Rara yang masih muda namun berani melakukan perlawanan dan penolakan.Kata-kata Kunci: perlawanan perempuan, fakta sosial, Rara Mendut, sosiologi sastra

Abstract

Every individual needs to survive and even succeed in their life. One of the ways to achieve such success is to be literate. Literacy makes people civilized and knows the purpose of their life. People need to build their awareness of the importance of literacy, one of which is through building reading literacy awareness. This paper aims at building literacy awareness through a community library built for the people in Regaji Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. This is a descriptive study taking the local people living in Regaji Village as the participants. Observations, interviews, and documentation were used to collect the data related to the past and current reading literacy awareness in this village. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the data analysis show that the reading literacy awareness of the local people was still relatively low. However, after the presence of the community library in this village, the literacy awareness of the local people, especially children, has grown, indicated by their increased reading habits. This current situation should be maintained and developed so that all the children in this village keep aware of the importance of reading literacy that eventually helps them get success in their future life.

Abstract

Speaking is the basic as well as the most important skill that needs to be acquired by English language learners. It is advisable that learning speaking English should begin as early as possible; however, to teach speaking skill to young learners is not an easy task since their age is the age of playing. Teaching speaking to young learners requires a teacher to find the technique best work with children, one of which is through games. One of the games that is corresponding to the age of young learners is a snake and ladder game. This paper aims at describing how a snake and ladder game is used in teaching speaking to young learners. Based on the discussion on applying a snake and ladder game, it is concluded that this game is the right game to apply in teaching speaking to young learners. People during early ages like playing and dislikes studying, especially in a formal education. By using this game, the children (learners) do not realize that they learn to speak English because they enjoy playing the game. In addition, this game supports the issue of student-centered learning because the students are the ones who actively practice speaking, while the teacher acts as the learning facilitator who provides assistance if needed.

Abstract

As the skill that usually becomes the reference of students’ success in learning English, teaching speaking needs to be given closer attention, especially in teaching English to elementary school students. Therefore, a careful choice of good approach, technique or media is required. This article aims at finding out the advantages of using multimedia-based teaching materials in teaching speaking to elementary school students in Kabanjahe, North Sumatra. This is a descriptive study taking the fifth year elementary schools students at SD Swasta Masehi in Kabanjahe of Karo Regency as the participants. The data were collected using observations and interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study show that using multimedia-based materials benefits the speaking learning process in terms of increasing the students’ interest, reducing the students’ shyness, increasing students’ motivation, and promoting student-centered learning. It is concluded that using multimedia-based materials helps build elementary school students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

Puncak Menara Api in Gunung Saribu Village, Munte Sub-District, Karo Regency, is a buffer zone of the protected forest area in Karo Regency. In 2020, all the local communities through village funds are trying to pioneer the development of Puncak Menara Api as a new tourist attraction. In relation to such an effort, the community service team of Universitas Sumatera Utara assisted the people in Gunung Saribu Village in creating the concept of developing Puncak Menara Api as a nature-based and education-based tourist attraction in Karo Regency. The assistance includes but not limited to improving the capacity of tourism management for rural communities, mapping the tourist sites, marketing the tourist sites, and so forth. For the many development activities items that must be done, the team selected mapping tourist sites as the only activity to be carried out in 2020. This study was conducted using a qualitative method. The data were collected using focus group discussion, observation, and interview techniques. The data were analyzed using visual analysis, including visualizing the point object attributes, visualizing point object distribution, and visualizing spatial groupings. The results of the study are: (i) the visualization on the point object attributes finds four main components related to tourism: Attractions, Accessibility, Amenities, and Ancillary Services; (ii) the visualization on the point object distribution results in predicting the initial picture of the arrangement of tourist attractions in Puncak Menara Api; and (iii) the visualization on the spatial groupings results in designing the tourist location in a three-dimensional design.

Abstract

The young generation is very vulnerable to negative associations, especially those related to drug abuse. One of the ways to save the young generation from the harmful effects of such drug abuse is encouraging them to get engaged in sports or physical activities, such as volleyball. This study aims at: (i) describing the facilities needed to make the local youth in Regaji Village engaged in playing volleyball; and (ii) finding out the advantages of playing volleyball in enhancing the local youth development in Regaji Village. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to describe the phenomenon of volleyball games among youth in Regaji Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The data were collected using direct observations and interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results show that the facilities available for playing volleyball in Regaji Village are not decent; meanwhile, many local young people like playing volleyball. Playing volleyball provides many advantages to help develop the youth potentials in Regaji Village. Attentions and concerns from the society members and the local government are required to attract more and more young generation in Regaji Village to get engaged in playing volleyball.

Abstract

Speaking is a skill often considered the benchmark of student’s success in learning English. Many studies have been conducted to examine the approaches, methods, and media that work best in improving the students’ speaking ability. One of the methods that can be used in teaching speaking is making a video project. This paper aims to find out how using a video project enhances the students’ speaking ability. This study was conducted using a descriptive method, taking the students at senior high schools in Medan as the participants. The data were collected using an observation method. The data were analyzed to show how a video project was used in teaching speaking and how it enhances the students’ speaking ability. The results indicate that using a video project in teaching speaking motivates the students to show their best speaking performance, eliminates their shyness and inhibition in speaking, and improves the students’ speaking fluency in English. Thus, the results recommend the use of a video project as a good method in teaching speaking English to senior high school students.
