Abstract

This study is motivated by the low motivation and conceptual understanding among the eighth-grade students at UPT SMP Negeri 8 Medan. The existing teaching methods, which do not address the students' needs or sufficiently motivate them, have led to a poor grasp of mathematical concepts, particularly in exponentiation. The "Teaching at the Right Level" (TaRL) approach, which is not confined to grade levels, can accommodate various student characteristics and enhance both motivation and conceptual understanding. Conducted over two cycles, this study aims to improve motivation and understanding of exponentiation concepts. Motivation data were collected through questionnaires, while understanding of the concepts was assessed via written tests, with both types of data analyzed quantitatively. The findings reveal an increase in motivation from 70.95% in Cycle I to 77.9% in Cycle II, and an improvement in understanding of exponentiation concepts from 80.63% in Cycle I to 86.9% in Cycle II.

Abstract

This research analyzes conceptual metaphors, as popularized by Lakoff and Johnson, which are divided into three types: structural metaphors, ontological metaphors, and orientational metaphors. The focus is on an editorial on Kompas.id titled "Child Bullying and Suicide," using a qualitative research method. The data collection technique involves the listening method, followed by note-taking. The examined data include the editorial text "Child Abuse and Suicide," containing structural metaphors, ontological metaphors, orientational metaphors, source domains, target domains, and image schemas. The research results were recorded and classified based on their categories. The findings reveal six ontological metaphors with image schemas of unity, force, space, and existence; two orientational metaphors with the image schema of space; and two structural metaphors with image schemas of unity and identity. This indicates that ontological metaphors are more commonly used in news writing on the online mass media platform Kompas.id compared to structural and orientational metaphors.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of interactive audio-visual learning media for short story materials in 11th-grade vocational school students. Utilizing the Research and Development (R&D) method based on the Borg and Gall model, the research process involved data collection, planning, product development, initial field testing, revisions, and implementation. The findings indicate that the developed media was rated as "Highly Feasible" by both material and media experts, with respective approval percentages of 90.4% and 93%. The effectiveness test revealed a significant improvement in students' learning outcomes, achieving a "Highly Effective" score of 87.28%. These results demonstrate that audio-visual media can significantly enhance student engagement and comprehension of the material. Furthermore, the media facilitates a more interactive and immersive learning experience, promoting independent learning and critical thinking skills among students. This study highlights the potential of technology-enhanced learning tools in improving the overall quality of education in vocational schools.

Abstract

This article is entitled Aliansi Gramatikal Na Lingua Melayu: Study of Linguistic Typology. This study of the Malay language's grammatical alliance aims to understand (1) the basic construction of clauses, (2) the construction of complex sentences, (3) the pivotal system, and (4) ultimately the definition of the grammar alliance system. This study uses the theory of language typology as the main theory proposed by Comrie. (1988). These research data are clauses and sentences. Qualitative descriptive. This approach aims to understand the existence of the overlap of different external and internal symptoms of the subject being the subject of the study. Data from the coordinative construction and subordinative construction of the Malay language typologically leads to the finding that in syntax, the Malay languages treat S equally with A, and give different treatment to P (S`=`A`≠ P). The Malay language is a group of languages that works with the S/A pivot system. A system of grammatical alliances such as this suggests that Malay is syntaxically a language of nominative-akusative type. Observing the behavior of S on the intransitive clause with the behaviour of A and P on the transitive clauses of Malay language which indicates that S is equal to A and equally equal with P, then morphologically Malay language has a tendency as a nominative-akusative language.
