Abstract

The rising demand for sustainable and welfare-conscious poultry production has driven renewed interest in forage-based feeding systems. This systematic review explores the nutritional and functional roles of various forage types such as legumes, grasses, and aquatic plants in poultry diets. The review synthesizes evidence from recent Scopus-indexed publications, focusing on nutrient composition, bioactive properties, performance outcomes, and potential limitations. Forages provide protein, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that can enhance feed efficiency, immunity, gut health, and product quality in poultry. Their integration also aligns with circular agriculture principles and improves animal welfare through behavioral enrichment. However, the practical adoption of forage in poultry systems is constrained by variability in nutritional value, the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs), low digestibility, and seasonal availability. Strategies such as fermentation, enzyme supplementation, and preservation techniques offer promising solutions to these challenges. This review identifies key research gaps, including the need for standardization of forage nutritional profiles, optimal inclusion rates, and long-term health impacts. Future directions highlight the potential of integrating precision nutrition technologies and policy support to enhance forage-based systems. Overall, forage represents a valuable component of sustainable poultry feeding strategies that balance performance, welfare, and environmental stewardship.

Abstract

The adaptive capacity of animals is a crucial factor in maintaining survival and productivity, particularly within sustainable livestock systems in tropical regions under climatic stress. This study aimed to analyze the physiological responses and daily behavioral patterns of Ettawa Crossbred (PE) goats to the environmental conditions of Mount Sangiang, Wera District, Bima Regency. The research was conducted using an observational descriptive approach with samples of PE goats from various age groups and sexes. Physiological parameters observed included body temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate, while behavioral aspects covered feeding, drinking, resting, exploration, and social interaction. The results showed that PE goats were able to maintain body temperature within the normal range (36–38°C), even when daytime environmental temperatures reached 32°C. Adjustments in respiratory rate and heart rate served as the primary mechanisms for coping with heat stress, with younger goats tending to be more sensitive than adults. In terms of behavior, PE goats grazed in the morning and afternoon when temperatures were cooler, while midday was used for resting and drinking to minimize the risk of heat stress. Exploration of the savanna was carried out to meet feed requirements, while social interactions occurred more frequently at night in the cooler and more humid coastal areas. Overall, PE goats demonstrated strong physiological and behavioral adaptability to the environmental conditions of Mount Sangiang.

Abstract

The availability of quality feed is a crucial factor in supporting the productivity of Peranakan Ettawa (PE) goats, which have high potential for both milk and meat production. The main challenges faced by farmers, particularly those in the Kerta Bangkit Livestock Group, Gangga Village, North Lombok, are the limited availability of forage during the dry season and the high cost of commercial feed. To address these challenges, a community service program was implemented, focusing on the utilization of organic waste as an alternative feed source. The program was conducted on June 25, 2025, involving 21 farmers as active participants. The activities included a preliminary survey, participatory socialization, training on semi-moist feed fermentation techniques using organic waste, and field mentoring. The training results showed an improvement in farmers’ knowledge and skills in processing organic waste into nutritionally valuable feed. Field evaluations recorded an average body weight gain of 62–85 g/head/day in PE goats after receiving fermented feed. In addition to reducing production costs, the program also contributed to environmentally friendly waste management. Overall, this community service program successfully enhanced farmers’ independence, supported the sustainability of smallholder livestock farming, and provided positive impacts on both community welfare and the environment. Abstract

Background: Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting the poultry industry. The NDV is classified into three strains based on their relative virulence, namely velogenic or highly virulent, mesogenic or moderately virulent, and lentogenic or lowly virulent. The clinical manifestations of the disease vary depending on many factors, such as host susceptibility and the virulence of the NDV strain. Objective: This study aims to analyze the amino acid mutations of the NDV in unvaccinated swan goose (Anser cygnoides) from various locations in Java. Methods: Samples were collected through cloacal swabs and isolated by inoculation in Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) embryonated eggs that were nine days old. Hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests were conducted to confirm that the isolated virus was NDV. The isolated virus was processed using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with primers that amplified partial sequences of the fusion (F) gene, which was analyzed to determine the pathotype. Results: The results indicated the presence of mutations in several regions. The amino acid changes occurred in 17 variable sites (7.2%) between RefSeq/JF950510 and ND/SW1/2018, 12 variable sites (5.1%) between RefSeq/JF950510 and ND/SW2/2018, 13 variable sites (5.5%) between RefSeq/JF950510 and ND/SW3/2018, and 19 variable sites (8.1%) between RefSeq/JF950510 and ND/SW4/2018. The amino acid sequences of the cleavage site of the fusion (F) protein revealed that all isolates had low virulence. Conclusion: The results indicated that mutations in the region outside the cleavage site not were incapable of altering the virulence of the virus.
