Abstract

The need for animal protein in Indonesia continues to increase, driving the popularity of goat milk as an alternative to cow's milk that is easier to digest and has health benefits. This study aims to review genetic and nutritional factors that affect the production and quality of dairy goat milk. The method used is a literature review of relevant scientific sources. Data analysis was carried out qualitatively. The results of the study indicate that genetic and nutritional factors play a major role in goat milk production. Imported goats such as Alpine (2,633 liters/lactation) and Saanen (2,621 liters/lactation) are more productive than local breeds such as Sapera (264.6 liters/lactation) and Peranakan Etawa (154.3 liters/lactation), supported by strict genetic selection and optimal maintenance management. Milk composition also varies, with Senduro goats having the highest total solids (14.30%), protein (3.74%), and fat (6.40%) compared to Alpine. Nutrition plays an important role in supporting milk production, with high protein sources such as lamtoro (32.0%) and turi (31.29%), as well as fat from turi (7.57%) and indigofera (6.15%) which increase milk fat content. Genetic and nutritional factors affect the production and quality of goat milk, with imported goats being more productive and Senduro goats being superior in milk composition. Proper feed and good management improve milk quality and livestock health. Understanding these genetic and nutritional factors is expected to be the basis for efforts to increase the productivity and quality of dairy goat milk in Indonesia

Abstract

This community service activity aims to inform the community about the importance of milk as a source of family nutrition, encourage the use of local livestock milk for this purpose, demonstrate the process of transforming buffalo milk into palopo, and highlight the economic benefits of livestock milk for improving farmers' incomes. This initiative addresses several issues: low public awareness of milk's health benefits and nutritional value, farmers' reluctance to milk lactating buffaloes due to concerns that this will deprive calves of their mother's milk, and the fact that milk is often wasted or not processed into other products. Additionally, there is a lack of familiarity with simple milk-processing technologies. To address these problems, the community service team from the Dairy Animal Science Department at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Mataram University, will conduct outreach and training activities focused on using local buffalo milk to increase family income and nutrition. The service activity, held on June 1, 2024, involved 25 participants, including housewives, buffalo breeders, and members of the general public. The activities included lectures, discussions, and hands-on training in making palopo. As a result of this initiative, the community gained a better understanding of milk's role in family nutrition, adopted the use of local livestock milk, and learned how to process buffalo milk into palopo.

Abstract

The dairy industry plays a strategic role in providing animal food, especially milk and its processed products. However, the sustainability of this industry is faced with the challenge of disease, one of which is mastitis inflammation of the udder which is generally caused by bacterial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Escherichia coli. Mastitis is divided into clinical and subclinical forms, with significant impacts on livestock health, animal welfare, decreased milk production and quality, and economic losses for farmers. This study aims to examine the causes of mastitis, its risk factors, and prevention and control strategies at the farm level. The method used is a literature study of various scientific sources and current publications. The results of the study indicate that controlling mastitis requires a holistic approach through hygienic milking practices, good barn management, application of dry cow therapy, chronic culling of dairy cattle, vaccination, and regular monitoring of udder health. Implementation of sustainable prevention strategies, accompanied by increased farmer awareness and policy support, is key to reducing the prevalence of mastitis and strengthening the resilience of dairy farming businesses.

Abstract

The adaptive capacity of animals is a crucial factor in maintaining survival and productivity, particularly within sustainable livestock systems in tropical regions under climatic stress. This study aimed to analyze the physiological responses and daily behavioral patterns of Ettawa Crossbred (PE) goats to the environmental conditions of Mount Sangiang, Wera District, Bima Regency. The research was conducted using an observational descriptive approach with samples of PE goats from various age groups and sexes. Physiological parameters observed included body temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate, while behavioral aspects covered feeding, drinking, resting, exploration, and social interaction. The results showed that PE goats were able to maintain body temperature within the normal range (36–38°C), even when daytime environmental temperatures reached 32°C. Adjustments in respiratory rate and heart rate served as the primary mechanisms for coping with heat stress, with younger goats tending to be more sensitive than adults. In terms of behavior, PE goats grazed in the morning and afternoon when temperatures were cooler, while midday was used for resting and drinking to minimize the risk of heat stress. Exploration of the savanna was carried out to meet feed requirements, while social interactions occurred more frequently at night in the cooler and more humid coastal areas. Overall, PE goats demonstrated strong physiological and behavioral adaptability to the environmental conditions of Mount Sangiang.
