Abstract

Abstract

The application of marine biology courses cannot be separated from field practicum activities which are integrated with the main scientific pattern of Pattimura University, namely build nobleh marine, meaning that the marine biology lecture process is a goal of developing human resources. One of the competencies of marine biology courses which emphasizes is that students must understand the life of various types of marine invertebrates that live in each coastal water ecosystem and must also master how to observe and research various types of marine invertebrate life found in each zone of coast (intertidal zone and subtidal). The results of the findings of various types of marine invertebrates were carried out by diversity analysis, the results were 2.0 <H'=2.363836 ≤ 3.0, meaning the level of diversity was medium. The relative density of invertebrates on various substrates includes sand 25%, density on sandy gravel substrates 9.9%, muddy substrates 11.4%, coral substrates 15%. The distribution patterns of various types of invertebrates can also be explained according to the results of analyzes including (1) clustered distribution patterns occur in Crustacea (Emita sp, Harpiosquilla raphidae, Ocypoda cursor), Gastropoda (Nerita polita, Conus sponalis), Bivalvia (Venerupis corrugate), (2) The distribution pattern is uniformly occurs in invertebrates of Bivalvia (Anadara broughtonii, Mytilus trossulus, Tridacna rosewateri, Pinctada radiate), (Diadema setosum, Holothuria scabra), Gasropoda (Strombus decorus). Proving the truth of the concept or theory of various types of invertebrates in biology courses the truth of the sea has been tested through field practicums in the coastal waters of Salahutu District, Ambon Island

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the chloroform extract of clove leaves (Syzygium aromaticum) as a source of bioactive compounds. Unlike most previous studies that predominantly focused on essential oils or polar extracts of clove, this research specifically investigates the antioxidant potential of the semi-polar chloroform extract, which remains relatively underexplored. Extraction was performed using chloroform to obtain semi-polar compounds with potential biological activity. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids, which are known to function as natural antioxidants. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay based on the ability of the sample to neutralize free radicals. The results demonstrated an increase in percentage inhibition with increasing extract concentration, indicating a positive linear relationship between concentration and antioxidant activity. Linear regression analysis yielded an IC₅₀ value of 69.40 ppm, classifying the extract as having strong antioxidant activity. In comparison, ascorbic acid exhibited an IC₅₀ value of 8.75 ppm, indicating very strong antioxidant activity. This difference is attributed to the nature of ascorbic acid as a pure compound, whereas the chloroform extract consists of a complex mixture of secondary metabolites. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting the significant antioxidant potential of the semi-polar chloroform fraction of clove leaves, thereby expanding the understanding of solvent-specific bioactive compound distribution and providing new insight into its possible application in functional food and pharmaceutical development. Overall, the findings suggest that the chloroform extract of clove leaves has promising potential as a natural source of bioactive compounds for further development.

Abstract

Creative thinking skills have become a central focus in biology education research in Indonesia, reflecting the growing demand for innovative and student-centered learning approaches. However, comprehensive evidence regarding research design and data analysis trends in this field remains limited. This study aims to analyze publication and methodological trends in creative thinking research published in SINTA-accredited biology education journals in Indonesia between 2012 and 2024. A content analysis was conducted on 121 peer-reviewed articles published between 2012 and 2024, focusing on research design, instruments, data analysis techniques, and biological content domains. The results indicate that quantitative and quasi-experimental designs dominate the field, with tests and questionnaires as the most frequently used instruments, while descriptive and inferential statistics remain the primary analytical approaches. These findings suggest the need for greater methodological diversity and deeper integration of biological content contexts, and this study recommends future researchers to adopt mixed-method approaches and advanced analytical techniques to strengthen the rigor and impact of creative thinking research in biology education.
