Abstract

Abstract

Strengthening critical thinking and collaboration skills has become an urgent need in 21st-century education; however, these skills remain relatively low among students. In fact, both are essential for navigating complex information, solving real-world problems, and working effectively in diverse teams. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the service-learning model in enhancing the critical thinking and collaboration skills of tenth-grade students, as well as to investigate the correlation between these two skills in the context of a virus-related biology topic. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group was employed. The sample consisted of two classes (30 students each), selected using cluster sampling. Critical thinking skills were assessed through tests, while collaboration skills were measured using observation sheets. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests and Pearson correlation. The results showed that the service-learning model was effective in improving both critical thinking and collaboration skills, and there was a significant positive correlation between the two. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of the service-learning model into biology instruction on the topic of viruses, aiming to foster 21st-century skills through meaningful, experience-based learning approaches.

Abstract

In the context of rapid digital transformation, the integration of the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) framework has become increasingly vital for educators—especially those teaching biology—to facilitate the incorporation of technology into instruction and promote deeper student comprehension of complex topics. TPACK comprises three foundational areas: Technological Knowledge (TK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), and Content Knowledge (CK), as well as their interrelated domains: Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), Technological Content Knowledge (TCK), and Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK). This study investigates the extent to which high school biology teachers implement the TPACK components. Employing a descriptive research design with a test-based approach, the study targets a hypothetical population encompassing all senior high school biology teachers in Sragen Regency—past, present, and prospective. A convenience sampling technique was applied, selecting 17 currently active biology teachers from 13 senior high schools across the region. Data collection utilized a structured test instrument designed to evaluate teachers’ comprehension of TPACK concepts. Results indicate that the participants generally possess a moderate level of knowledge regarding the application of TPACK in teaching.

Abstract

Modern learning focuses on active student engagement through thinking, creativity, and collaboration, supported by PjBL and AI to suit the digital era. This study explores the impact of AI-assisted project-based learning (PjBL) on students' analytical thinking, creative thinking, and collaboration skills in biology education, focusing on the circulatory system. Using a quasi-experimental design with 80 eleventh-grade students (40 experimental, 40 control) from SMAN 1 Magelang, Indonesia, the research employed MANOVA and ANOVA to analyze posttest scores. Results revealed significant improvements in the experimental group, with mean differences of 5.67 (analytical thinking, *p* = 0.001), 4.12 (creative thinking, *p* = 0.010), and 3.89 (collaboration, *p* = 0.015). AI tools enhanced analytical skills through data visualization and feedback, fostered creativity via simulations and iterative problem-solving, and supported collaboration via AI-driven task allocation and communication platforms. However, collaboration gains were more modest, underscoring the enduring role of interpersonal dynamics. The study concludes that integrating AI into PjBL effectively cultivates higher-order thinking skills, though its implementation requires balancing technological and human-centric pedagogical approaches. These findings advocate for AI as a transformative tool in biology education, provided ethical and accessibility considerations are addressed.

Abstract

This classroom action research was conducted in 2024 at SMA Negeri 42 Maluku Tengah, specifically in grade X Biology, focusing on the Plantae topic. The study was motivated by the low student engagement and learning outcomes, which were evident from several factors, including lack of enthusiasm during lessons, minimal participation in learning activities, the perceived irrelevance of the material to daily life, and overall poor academic performance. To address these issues, a combination of the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach and the Role Playing model was implemented. This strategy aimed to enhance students' comprehension by connecting the material to real-world experiences, thereby improving their academic performance. Conducted in two cycles, the study revealed a significant improvement, with student motivation reaching 98% and learning outcomes achieving 100%. Students with higher motivation demonstrated better academic results as they were actively engaged in the learning process and could relate the material to their everyday experiences. The findings suggest that integrating the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach with the Role Playing model effectively enhances student motivation and learning outcomes in Biology, particularly in the Plantae topic.
