Abstract

Digital tools have become increasingly popular in enhancing student engagement and accessibility, particularly in the context of English Language Teaching (ELT). This study explores the effectiveness of Heyzine digital flipbooks in improving engagement and accessibility for diverse learners in the Technology in ELT course at Universitas Negeri Medan. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through classroom observations, lecturer interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), surveys, and questionnaires. The findings show that digital flipbooks significantly enhance student engagement, with multimedia elements like videos, animations, and quizzes catering to different learning styles. Accessibility features, such difficulties accessing content in digital flipbooks and accessibility in mind for students with different needs, were particularly beneficial for students with learning disabilities. However, technical challenges such as slow loading times and navigation difficulties were noted, alongside concerns regarding accessibility design for students with visual, auditory, and learning disabilities. Despite these issues, 75% of students reported never feeling disengaged, and 95% of students found the interactive features most engaging. The study concludes that while digital flipbooks have great potential to foster engagement and improve learning outcomes, ongoing improvements in usability and accessibility are necessary to fully support diverse learners.

Abstract

This research is an exploration into the development and impact of innovative teaching materials in the field of Creative Arts, with a particular focus on Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a pedagogical approach that enhances the cultivation of 4Cs competencies: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity among students. This study rigorously adheres to the systematic Research and Development (R&D) model by Borg and Gall, comprising six iterative stages, namely, problem identification, needs assessment, development of materials, and validation by experts, revision, and final product creation. The targeted population for this study consists of 25 students in the 5th semester enrolled in the Creative Arts in ELT course at Universitas Negeri Medan. The research underscores the significance of PjBL as a transformative method to boost student motivation, engagement, and overall academic performance. The comprehensive needs assessment and expert validation demonstrate that the developed materials effectively promote the development of 4Cs competencies. This research goes beyond addressing specific student needs; it also revitalizes the learning journey while nurturing vital 21st-century skills. In essence, it offers a blueprint for effective teaching material development, enriching the educational landscape and meeting the evolving demands of modern education. The results of this study showcase the successful creation of innovative teaching materials that are designed to elevate the students' learning experiences and bolster their 4Cs competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how Virtual Reality (VR) can enhance students’ public speaking skills in Receptive Oral Language Learning. VR provides a realistic and interactive environment that allows learners to practice speaking without the pressure of a real audience. Through VR, students can engage in various scenarios, receive immediate feedback, and improve their confidence and fluency in public speaking. This research employed a mixed-method approach involving interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The findings indicate that VR is an effective tool for improving both verbal and non-verbal communication. Quantitative results show that 80% of students strongly agreed and 20% agreed that VR enhances their public speaking performance. Qualitative feedback further revealed that VR practice reduced anxiety and increased learners’ motivation. However, challenges such as the high cost of VR equipment, limited accessibility, and health-related comfort issues were also identified. Overall, VR is proven to be a valuable pedagogical tool for improving students’ public speaking competence and receptive oral language learning outcomes.
