Abstract

Background: Unhygienic hands can cause microorganism infection. Citronella oil contains citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol, which have antibacterial activity. Liquid hand soap removes the dirt and microorganisms; however, it commonly uses sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) as a foaming agent that may irritate the skin. Lauryl glucoside is a non-ionic, non-irritating surfactant. This study aimed to formulate and characterise liquid hand soaps from citronella oil using a combination of SLS and lauryl glucoside as surfactants. Methods: The research was conducted using an experimental laboratory method. Three liquid hand soap formulas were developed from 15% citronella oil with different weight ratios of SLS and lauryl glucoside: F1 (1:2), F2 (1:1), and F3 (2:1). Then, all liquid hand soaps were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, and foam height. Then the foam stability test was conducted after the formed foam was left for 5 minutes. Results: The results showed that all liquid hand soaps were homogeneously distributed, clear viscous liquids having a distinctive odour of citronella oil. The liquid hand soap preparations had a viscosity range of 549.7–565.8 cps, a pH in the range of 7.39–7.89, a foam height of 74–85 mm, and a stability foam of 63.52–68.91%. All formulas complied with SNI 2588:2017 criteria for liquid hand soap. Conclusion: This study presented that citronella oil could be formulated into liquid hand soap using a combination of SLS and lauryl glucoside. The optimal formula was F1 with a 1:2 ratio of SLS and lauryl glucoside. F1 had the most stable foam due to the higher concentration of lauryl glucoside, which enhances foam stability.

Abstract

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a symbiotic bacterium involved in the development of acne, is recognized for its capacity to develop resistance due to its ability to generate biofilms. According to a previous investigation, the ethyl acetate fraction derived from Zingiber montanum exhibited anti-bacterial properties against P. acnes. Nevertheless, the causative role of biofilm formation in its resistance was not previously recognized. This study aims to ascertain the antibiofilm efficacy using in silico and in vivo methodologies. In this study, in silico examination utilized molecular docking to inhibit the quorum sensing mechanism by blocking the autoinducer 2 (AI-2) signal. The target protein was AI-2 binding periplasmic protein LuxP (PDB code: 4YRZ). Following that, an in vitro test was conducted using the crystal violet staining method, which was read using a microplate reader at a wavelength of 600 nm. The readings were expressed as percent inhibition and IC50. The in silico results showed that there were six compounds in the ethyl acetate fraction that have the potential to inhibit AI-2 signaling. Curcumin showed the highest inhibitory activity. Meanwhile, the in vitro results revealed that the ethyl acetate fraction of Z. montanum obtained the minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC) of 2.5 % (w/v) and IC50 = 0.28 % (w/v). It can be concluded that the ethyl acetate fraction of Zingiber montanum could inhibit the biofilm formation of P. acnes.

Abstract

Hand sanitizer is known for its ability to kill germs quickly due to its alcohol content, making it more effective than washing hands with soap and water. However, excessive use of alcoholbased sanitizers can cause skin irritation and dryness. Alcohol is polar and volatile, leading to rapid skin dryness and reduced effectiveness. To address this, gelling agents like Carbomer 940 are added to spray gel formulations. Carbomer 940 offers high stability and low toxicity, thereby enhancing the gel’s antibacterial properties. This study aims to develop an innovative spray gel hand sanitizer using Carbomer 940. The research method used was a pure experiment, evaluating the % inhibition of microbial growth on agar media. Results showed that the spray gel with 0.05% Carbomer 940 had superior effectiveness, with 60.77% inhibition, compared to the control group using the WHO formula, which achieved 33.11%. Additionally, the spray gel had a pH of 6.5 ± 0.2, a viscosity of 135.10, and an average spray weight of 0.027 ± 0.000 g, demonstrating optimal physical quality. In conclusion, the spray gel hand sanitizer with 0.05% Carbomer 940 was more effective at inhibiting microbial growth than the WHO standard formula.
