Abstract

Literatures are meanings of everyday life as on point with Sandra Bem’s concept about androgynous sides that focuses on indicating masculinity and femininity of individuals and societies. Why Don’t You Get a Job? is a song by The Offspring in 1999 that underlines American couples’ condition where only one side is working while the other is doing nothing. Interestingly, this band shows how that situation happens to both gender. Then, how is androgynous perspective represented on The Offspring’s Why Don’t You Get a Job?? Through qualitative method, this paper exposes that man and woman are proved not to be so independent and dependent, but both should work to complement each other. That song indicates that society is so androgynous that spots roles of man and woman supported by Bem’s theory. In conclusion, the song shows society is not totally about man or woman but how each side asks other side for better deed. The Offspring asserts androgynous perspective that requires roles of man and woman, not of being dominant but to be complementary.

Abstract

This article would like to expose matter of phallocentrism in short story written by Grace Paley entitled Wants. Phallocentrism itself plays role as the dictations of values of male against female beings. Grace Paley’s short story published in 1974 and tells a woman’s perspective that is so slow and simple in wanting anything. Her ex-husband has certain dream to be achieved, but she only wants to be a good mother and be happy. Through qualitative method on cultural studies, this paper depicts dictation of a man to his ex-wife. This is in line with dictation of man in phallocentrism theorized by Ernest Jones. The woman actually has done many intangible things, but those meant nothing for the man as he wants tangible ones. The man wants to run but the woman prefers to walk. Both of them are lost in time of being together since the ex-husband’s side is too dominant for the ex-wife’s part. In conclusion, the short story explains total difference due to radical dominance instead of living dialogues between man and woman.

Abstract

Premeditatio malorum is a Stoic philosophical concept that speaks about negative visualization of conditions that may come. By imagining, Stoic people could prepare anything to the most specific aspects that may be realized. Meanwhile, post-pandemic condition is related to recovery of everything. Since COVID-19 outbreak changes our life, new normal condition should be filled with preventive actions rather than preemptive ones. Alongside with those, prolonging hope should be always kept in flowing to walk together with people in everyday life. The question is, how may premeditatio malorum contribute to dissemination of hope in post-pandemic recovery today? Using qualitative method, philosophical and cultural concepts are used to explain correlations between premeditatio malorum, living hope, and post-pandemic recovery. The reality of hope does not stand alone but should be accompanied with anticipations of bad impacts that may come. Preparing for inevitable setbacks could contribute more to optimism than being pessimistic or surrender to current conditions. It is matter of practice that will make people calm and shape further hope to amend unavoidable impacts. In conclusion, by thinking negatively, this Stoic concept could overcome negative impacts of future condition. Moreover, premeditatio malorum may provide such framework of thoughts to widen hope to its best and worst conditions that may happen afterwards.
