Abstract

Indonesia has a federation organization that brings together several Islamic organizations. This organization is known as the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). One of his duties is to issue Islamic legal fatwas to serve as guidelines for the Muslim community. However, on a practical level, quite a few fatwas give rise to polemics. In several cases of intolerance and mobilization of political interests, MUI fatwas are often used as a means of legitimation. This article wants to discuss the contestation of the MUI fatwa with the dynamics of Islamic thought in Indonesia in the context of the digital era. Data was obtained from online news documents regarding MUI fatwas in several cases with social problems. This research found that the MUI fatwa polemic arose due to the need to consider Indonesia's social setting and political conditions. Hence, Islamic law products were prone to being misused and misunderstood. This study also argues that the MUI authorities must package the fatwa by prioritizing cultural diversity, social impacts, and political tensions at that time. Thus, the MUI fatwa must be formulated apart from being based on scientific grounds and supported by good online media infrastructure. So they will be better able to contest with the new religious authority in the post-truth era. Good fatwa packaging via social media is also oriented towards finding substantial values in responding to community problems based on the principle of uniting the community (tauhid al-ummah) and protecting the community (himayat al-ummah).

Abstract

This study examines the concept of istita'ah (capability), and the problems faced by pilgrims in Indonesia with the departure regulation that implements a waiting list system. This research is purely a literature study using a normative juridical approach. Islamic law stipulates that one of the conditions that must be met by someone who will perform the pilgrimage is istita'ah (capable) which includes aspects of physical and spiritual health, financial ability, and safe situation. Unfortunately, even though these conditions have been met, it does not necessarily allow someone to go directly to Mecca to perform the pilgrimage. The reason is that there is a quota system set by the Saudi Arabian Government to balance the coming pilgrims with the capacity of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. As a result of this quota system, prospective pilgrims in Indonesia have to queue waiting for departure, with a waiting time span of tens of years. This study finds out that the waiting list system, although aimed at ensuring the smooth and comfortable in performing pilgrimage, turned out to be an obstacle, because there is no guarantee that a person, in such a long waiting period, will remain healthy, even many. some of them had died before the time of departure arrived. Therefore, the government must find a solution to suppress the waiting list so that it does not continue to extend, by setting certain criteria for individuals who will register, for example the age limit and whether or not the person has performed hajj before.

Abstract

Translating the Qur'an is a complex task that requires not only linguistic accuracy but also sensitivity to semantic and spiritual meanings. One of the major challenges in Qur'anic translation lies in rendering cognitive terms such as tafakkur, tadabbur, and ʿaql, which possess complex and multifaceted semantic dimensions. This study aims to identify the diagnostic and supplementary semantic features of these three terms using the Componential Analysis (CA) approach. In addition, it evaluates their lexical equivalents in two Indonesian and two English Qur'anic translations to assess semantic equivalence. The findings reveal that although the three terms share cognitive and contemplative features, each reflects distinct orientations and functions: tafakkur emphasizes exploratory thinking about observable phenomena; tadabbur involves deductive reflection on the implicit meanings of verses; and ʿaql denotes evaluative reasoning grounded in knowledge. The translation assessment indicates that the Hilali & Khan and Saheeh International versions provide the most semantically accurate renderings, whereas the Kemenag and Muhammad Thalib translations exhibit certain limitations. These results highlight the importance of a semantic-based approach in Qur'anic translation to preserve the depth and accuracy of the Qur'an's cognitive–spiritual message. This study contributes to the cross-linguistic understanding of the semantic nuances of Qur'anic cognitive terms and provides a methodological foundation for further research on meaning transfer and translation strategies in Qur'anic exegesis and translation studies.

Abstract

The social changes of the Palu community after the 2018 disaster affected the values, attitudes, behaviors, and perspectives of some religious groups in society, which in turn forced the Balia tradition to transform as an adaptive step. This qualitative research aims to find the transformation of Balia by using an ethnographic approach. The research location was in the cities of Palu and Sigi. The sample was determined twice using the snowball technique and convenience sampling, which resulted in five respondents. Data was collected using depth interviews and analyzed using triangulation. This study found that Balia has transformed into a new form adapted to the community's needs and demands, called Sakaya. The term Sakaya is intended for someone who can be a medium or a means of communication with supernatural beings. Sakaya is not a colossal ritual but a personal ritual. The transformation occurs in the second aspect of Balia and does not leave the primary aspect. As a result, these rituals have become more effective, efficient, inexpensive, and easily accessible to the public. Another finding of this research is that the function of the Sakaya is extended beyond Balia, which includes economic, social, and political aspects, which makes it more acceptable in the social life of the Kaili tribal community.
