Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the efforts of Chinese Muslims in practicing Islamic education in their minority communities. By using a social pedagogical approach model in Islamic education, Chinese Muslims make social and cultural issues a starting point for religious understanding. As a minority social entity, Chinese Muslims who are members of PITI (Indonesian Chinese Muslim Association), also try to transmit their Islamic knowledge not co-opted by radical Islamic religious doctrines. By using qualitative-phenomenological research methods, this study has succeeded in finding that this minority Muslim community's social pedagogy realizes by involving three elements simultaneously: teaching, acculturation, and social action in Islamic education. Through this strategy, Chinese Muslims try to become devout Muslims without reducing their cultural reality as a Chinese. In another position, the Chinese Muslim social pedagogy approach seeks to carry out the de-radicalization movement using socio-cultural instruments through academic activities in Islamic education.

Abstract

Chinese Muslims have a cultural identity as a double minority. In Islam, they are a minority within their ethnic religion and remain a minority among other ethnic groups in Indonesia. This ethnic group embraces Islam mostly because of religious conversion. The aspect of religious conversion makes ethnic Chinese come to Islam. This study aims to find the expression of Muslim in Surabaya, who are using social action tools asa manifestation of their faith to gain trust from the mainstream while maintaining their cultural identity as Chinese so as not to experience alienation in their communities. This study found that Chinese Muslim’s social theology in Surabaya serves as an articulation of cosmopolitan Islam that is successfully integrated into an inclusive Chinese identity. This also confirms that being a good Muslim is not in a binary position with being a pure Chinese. Besides, the theological vision of Chinese Muslims is expressed not only by maintaining its cultural background, but also through social movements that are inspired and based on Islamic dogmatic teachings that emphasize human values. Keywords: Social Theology, Chinese Muslims, Existential Problems

Abstract

One of the ideas that should also be formalized in the reform movement in Indonesia is addressing the issue related to minority groups. Chinese group in Indonesia is one of civil groups that may experience discrimination to date. As a minority ethnic and Muslim community in Indonesia, Chinese Muslims are inevitably in a vulnerable position. They should prove their patriotism toward the nation, Indonesia. This research finds out that the Chinese have been a community that exists way before Indonesia gained its independence: some even play a significant role in Islamization. Chinese Muslims in Indonesia also contribute to establishing the concept of nationalism in Indonesia. Additionally, Chinese Muslims seem to be successful in contextualizing a more substantial concept of nationalism by positioning Chinese ethnic as a cultural entity, not as a representative of “other nation,” and by assimilating local Muslims to play various societal roles. Besides, Chinese Muslims also practice moderate Islamic values to emphasize that their values do not contradict the national values of Indonesia.

Abstract

This research explores the extracurricular learning program at Tanfirul Ghoyyi Lamongan Islamic Middle School, aimed at strengthening students' religious character. The goal is to prepare a future generation that is creative, resilient, and independent. The study focuses on the steps taken by the school, the role of the principal and staff in internalizing religious values, and the supporting factors and obstacles encountered. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data was gathered through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data was then analyzed using condensation, exposure, and conclusion techniques. The findings reveal several key steps the school takes to strengthen students' religious character. These include formulating the goals of extracurricular activities in line with the school's vision and mission, determining the implementation team, developing curriculum programs, creating extracurricular activities, innovating learning outside the classroom, and implementing habituation, modeling, and supervision. The principal plays a crucial role in planning, organizing, and supervising the program. At the same time, supervisory teachers are responsible for enhancing religious understanding, guiding the internalization process, and training students. Support for the program comes from various sources, including the school, student guardians, the Islamic boarding school environment, the creativity of supervisory teachers, and high student interest. However, challenges include a lack of awareness among community members and parents. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of a collaborative effort involving school administration, teachers, students, and parents in effectively strengthening students' religious character through extracurricular activities. This research provides valuable insights into the practical steps and collective efforts required to nurture a morally grounded and independent future generation.
