Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the immunity factor of Acehnese loyalty to the ulama. Generally, if the ulama fail to respond to problems that arise in modernity, they are abandoned by society. Modernization is taking place very quickly in Aceh. In Aceh, even though the ulama were unable to respond to modernity, they were never abandoned by the community. The type of modernization that is the focus of the author's observation is development, politics, and economics which includes banking and trade. Using a qualitative approach, this study finds, that is in Aceh, precisely because the ulama do not respond to modernity, the immunity of loyalty to the ulama can continue. In Aceh, secular-minded society, they give authority to experts in their respective fields. Because the ulama are treated as religious experts, then when they do not respond to other fields such as development, politics, economics and other fields, they become respected. Although only given space in the field of religion, the position of the ulama remains very important in Aceh because religion is a very important part of the life of the Acehnese people

Abstract

Wahdatul Wujud or Unity of Being is a sufi doctrine that is in accordance with the well-known, inclusive and permissive views of the people of Nusantara. The teaching has proven to be an important part in realizing the peaceful and harmonious civilization of the Islamic archipelago. Unfortunately when orthodox theology doctrines which nuanced exclusive and radical dominated the Muslim intellectual discourse of archipelago, the doctrine of Wahdatul Wujud become excluded and even terminated from the stage of Islamic intellectualism of archipelago. This paper wants to evaluate critically the work of Ibrahim Kurani, Ithaf ad-Dhaki bi Shahr at-Tuhfah al-Mursalah ila an-Nabi which was written intentionally to explain the papers of Muhammad Fadhullah al-Burhanpuri entitled at-Tuhfah al-Mursalah ila an-Nabi Which discusses the teachings of Wahdatul Wujud that had been spread in the archipelago. This Ibrahim Kurani’s works is necessasry to be evaluated though it is generally accepted as the synthesis of Wahdatul Wujud according to orthodox theology, but  factually it has a very significant role in reducing this doctrine so that Wahdatul Wujud becomes a foreign doctrine in the archipelago. In this study the authors found some epistemological and academic error committed by Ibrahim Kurani to the doctrine of Wahdatul Wujud in his book. The author expects Wahdatul Wujud could be revived in scientific and academic discourse as a solution to counter the teachings of exclusive and radical Islam in order to realize a peaceful and democratic Islam as had happened in the history of Islamic civilization in archipelago.

Abstract

This article investigates the online media reporting of Islamophobic policies during the presidency of Joko Widodo, Indonesia’s current president. The study comprises a critical discourse analysis, which identifies three reporting dimensions, namely micro, mezzo, and macro. The article finds that discriminatory policies against Indonesian Muslims have triggered the emergence of news of Islamophobia in government policies. Politically, this causes Islamophobic propaganda, which, for the government, is a form of discourse struggle, the aim of which is to secure public support. Reports of government-backed Islamophobic propaganda moved the government to amend some of its policies, and facilitated the emergence of counter-narrative news, which refuted these accusations of Islamophobia. This study also shows that accusations of Islamophobia against the government are a result of the trauma many Muslims experienced, historically, long before the Jokowi presidency.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the journey of finding meaning in life, focusing on the transformation from students’ meaningless inner feelings into meaningful feelings. This research is a field study with qualitative and phenomenological approaches. It involved six respondents with an average age of 17-18 years old. It examines the meaningfulness of life for students (santri) from the perspectives of the presence of meaning and the search for meaning. The results showed that childhood is a golden period for happiness, especially with parental support. However, orphans often lose motivation and a sense of meaning in life, feeling more pressured in boarding schools with the monotonous routine of memorizing the Qur'an. Students often pursue this education due to family pressure. In conclusion, the journey to find meaning in life for hafiz Qur’an students involves stages of suffering, self-acceptance, discovering the meaning of life, realizing that meaning, and leading a meaningful life.

Abstract

THE HUMANIZATION OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION THROUGH TRANSENDENTAL ANTROPOLOGY OF HAMZAH FANSURI. Every educational plan surely has an accurate basic assumption about humanity. The failure in determining the accuracy of humanity ontology and epistemology will certainly make the failure of the initiated education implementation. Therefore, every educational implementation must have a humanity philosophical concept in accordance with its ontological and epistemological realities. Islamic education today has not have a clear ontological and epistemological foundation yet. As a result, there are many philosophical issues that arise in the implementation of Islamic education especially dehumanity. This paper examined the philosophical foundations and practices of Islamic education through the transcendental anthropology of Hamzah Fansûrî. The constrtuction of Islamic education humanization was done through Ruba'i Hamzah Fansûrî’s Syair (traditional poetry) which has been explained by his student, Syams al-Dîn al-Sumatra'î. This paper reveals that transcendental anthropology of Hamzah Fansûrî is very suitable with the values of humanity in Pancasila (the philosophical basis of the Indonesian state), therefore, it is worth being the ontological and epistemological basis for the theory and practice of the implementation of Islamic Education in Indonesia. The paper suggests that the teachings of Hamzah Fansûrî be embodied in the basis of various segments of the social sciences, especially Islamic education, in order to create a peaceful and inclusive Islam that fits the noble values of Pancasila.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the mystical dimensions of the pajonjong bagas ceremony, a series of rituals in building a new house, as part of the culture of the Batak Angkola community. In this traditional ceremony, several rituals contain mystical elements, to influence the beliefs of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama'ah. Based on the qualitative study, an ethnographic approach was employed, with data obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation of the entire pajonjong bagas ceremonial processes in the Batang Angkola sub-district, South Tapanuli. The results showed that the pajonjong bagas encompassed a high philosophical value and were highly beneficial for the community, specifically for those establishing new houses and still deeply rooted in local traditions or wisdom. However, several elements of the rituals were not explicitly studied or significant in the teachings of Islam. Various symbols were also used in the ceremony, such as coconut, sugarcane and palm sugar, chayote, and banana symbolizing usefulness, sweet speech actualization, continuity, and coolness. All these symbols were assembled and hung on the rabung bukkulan, a wooden structure used as a framework. This cultural accommodation was subsequently associated with local and Sufi mysticism.

Abstract

This article explores the influence of the digital era on spiritual practices within the context of Tarekat Sufism. Using a qualitative approach incorporating in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and content analysis of digital Sufism platforms, this study examines the changes in rituals, the evolving role of spiritual teachers, and the integration of digital technology in spiritual life. Tarekat, shaped by the experiential knowledge of Sufi masters, intersects with digital advancements enabling seamless access to a vast array of resources in cyberspace. The findings reveal that digital technology has significantly impacted spiritual practices within Tarekat Sufism. These include easier access to spiritual guidance through online platforms, the proliferation of Sufism applications and digital content, and the formation of online communities fostering spiritual connection. However, the challenges such as the risk of spiritual commodification, the reduced personal interaction with spiritual teachers, and the maintainance of authenticity in digital spiritual practices are also observed. This research contributes to the academic discourse by highlighting the intersection of spirituality and technology, offering a nuanced understanding of how digital tools reshape traditional Sufi practices. Methodologically, it underscores the utility of combining qualitative methods with digital ethnography to study the evolving spiritual phenomena. These insights provide a foundation for further exploration of the balance between tradition and innovation in the context of digital spirituality.

Abstract

The synonymy of meaning between the words khatama and ṭaba'a in the Qur'an has become an important issue in semantic and exegesis studies. These two words are often understood to have similar meanings, namely to close, but have different contextual nuances. This study aims to analyze the semantic differences between khatama and ṭaba'a, and evaluate their relevance in the context of contemporary exegesis. The method used is a qualitative method with semantic-comparative analysis techniques. The results of the study show that khatama tends to be used to describe God's action in closing the heart permanently as a consequence of rejecting the truth, while ṭaba'a is more of a locking action that is oriented towards cause and effect. In the context of contemporary exegesis, this difference is relevant to understanding the dynamics of guidance and rejection of the truth in modern society. In conclusion, khatama and ṭaba'a are not entirely synonymous, but rather have specific contextual meanings. This study makes an important contribution in deepening the study of the semantics of the Qur'an and enriching the interpretation of exegesis with a contextual approach.
