Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the mathematical concepts embedded in the traditional production of sago pom-pom in Tabarfane Village, Aru Islands Regency. Using a qualitative approach with an interpretive ethnographic design, data were gathered through direct observation, in-depth interviews with pom-pom producers, and field documentation. Findings reveal that each stage of production—washing, drying, sifting, burning, cooling, cutting, sun-drying, and packaging—naturally embodies mathematical activities as categorized by Bishop: counting, measuring, locating, designing, explaining, and playing. These activities involve geometric concepts such as cylinders, circles, and triangular prisms, alongside basic arithmetic operations and equivalent fractions, all practiced intuitively within a framework of local wisdom. These findings affirm that ethnomathematics present in sago pom-pom production not only contributes to cultural preservation but also holds strategic value as a contextual learning resource in mathematics education

Abstract

This research explores the connection between the sasi culture, a local wisdom of the Kei Islands community in Southeast Maluku, and mathematical concepts. Sasi is a natural resource management system based on the Larvul Ngabal customary law, aimed at maintaining environmental sustainability through harvesting bans on certain resources for specific time periods. Although not formally recognized, sasi practices contain elements of ethnomathematics—mathematics embedded in cultural context. This exploration found that sasi reflects mathematical concepts, including time, measurement, classification, and simple mathematical modeling for resource optimization. The article aims to describe and analyze how mathematical concepts are integrated into sasi practices, while highlighting the potential of ethnomathematics as a relevant bridge in contextual mathematics learning. Findings show that sasi practices implicitly contain at least four main mathematical concepts: (1) concepts of time and traditional calendars reflecting periodicity and estimation; (2) measurement and classification of resources using non-standard units; (3) geometry and spatiality in territorial boundary determination; and (4) simple mathematical modeling in sustainable resource management.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the implementation of the GASING (Easy, Fun, and Enjoyable) method through the traditional Congka game in improving the mathematical conceptual understanding of students at MIT Daarunnaim Ambon. The study employed a mixed methods approach using a convergent parallel mixed methods design. The population, sample, and research subjects consisted of 20 fourth-grade students at MIT Daarunnaim Ambon. The research instruments included a mathematical conceptual understanding test, observation sheets, and interview guidelines. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Normalized Gain (N-Gain), while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the implementation of the GASING method integrated with the traditional Congka game was carried out through the concrete, abstract, and mental calculation stages, creating an active, enjoyable, and contextual learning environment. The data analysis showed an average N-Gain score of 0.77, which falls into the high category. These findings indicate that the GASING method through the traditional Congka game is effective in improving the mathematical conceptual understanding of students at MIT Daarunnaim Ambon.
