Abstract

National identity is a crucial element in building unity within a country, and history plays a central role in shaping that identity. However, sometimes the focus on national history can overlook local cultural roots and heritage that are integral to the larger national identity. An Merdeka curriculum that incorporates local history is an important instrument in linking national history with local cultural roots. Although the challenges of integrating local history are many, the resulting benefits, including an appreciation of cultural diversity, local pride, and a deeper understanding of national identity, provide a strong basis for continuing this endeavor. The type of research used is qualitative. The results of this study show the importance of local history in reinforcing national identity. The integration of local history in the curriculum not only deepens students' knowledge, but also provides a stronger foundation for shaping a national identity that is inclusive, values diversity, and strengthens the bond between local and national identity.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe Appropriation of Gugah Sahur Musical Art: A Case Study of Tongklek Tuban and Tong-Tong Madura. This study aims to identify the interrelation between Tongklek Tuban and Tong-tong Madura. Tongklek Tuban, which is a typical music art of Tuban, evolves from the Patrol art in the form of music created originally in Tuban Regency. Interestingly, at first glance, Tongklek Tuban seems to have similarities to Tong-tong art that develops in Madura. To examine both art work thoroughly in this study, the authors implemented qualitative approach, employing both the literature review and documentation techniques. The results of the study reveal that Tongklek Tuban has undergone various changes in its visual form in terms of costumes, equipment, and decorations. It takes both tangible and intangible property from Tong-tong Madura. Moreover, Tonglek Tuban is experiencing another development in terms of creativity reflected to the wheelbarrow used to push the iron xylophone. Over time, the wheelbarrow has undergone a very extraordinary change in shape. At this time, Tongklek Tuban music groups are competing to form their wheelbarrows which actually look like Madurese Tong-tong music. According to the results of the study, positively, appropriation between artworks can be interpreted both positively or negatively. On one hand, an adapted culture can develop through innovation, so that the culture can remain sustainable. On the other hand, negatively, the feelings of disapproval from the owners of the original culture could emerge since they feel that their culture is carried out as an addition to the artistic elements of the appropriating subject.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana apropriasi dalam kesenian antara Tongklek Tuban dan Tong-Tong Madura.

Abstract

This study explores the processes and challenges of linguistic revitalization within the Osing-speaking community in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, in the context of rapid globalization and cultural homogenization. Employing an ethnolinguistic approach, this research combines participant observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of local cultural practices to examine how language functions as a marker of ethnic identity and cultural continuity. The findings reveal that globalization exerts a dual influence: it contributes to language shift through the dominance of Indonesian and global media, yet simultaneously creates opportunities for revitalization via tourism, cultural festivals, and digital platforms. Community-driven initiatives such as integrating Osing into school curricula, promoting Osing-language performances, and documenting oral traditions, play a central role in preserving linguistic heritage. However, these efforts face structural challenges, including limited institutional support, intergenerational language gaps, and the commodification of culture that risks reducing the language to a symbolic artifact. This study underscores the importance of collaborative strategies involving local communities, educational institutions, and policy-makers to sustain Osing as a living language, offering broader insights into the dynamics of minority language revitalization in the Global South.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of crisis communication in Makassar during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the interaction between leadership visibility, digital information flows, policy clarity, and participatory practices. The urgency of this research lies in addressing how local governments in decentralized contexts manage communication when institutional trust is fragile and citizens face unequal access to information. Using a qualitative case study approach with triangulated interviews, documents, and media analysis, four major themes emerged: the symbolic centrality of mayoral leadership, the uneven reach of digital platforms, fragmentation and ambiguity in policy-related communication, and the critical role of local actors in building trust. The findings reveal that while mayoral visibility generated short-term reassurance, its effectiveness was limited by weak coordination across administrative layers. Similarly, reliance on digital platforms amplified inequalities, excluding marginalized populations from vital information. By contrast, neighborhood leaders, religious figures, and NGOs functioned as trusted intermediaries, translating official messages into socially resonant forms. Theoretically, this study contributes to crisis communication scholarship by demonstrating that effective communication requires more than symbolic authority or technological innovation; it depends on relational trust, procedural fairness, and hybrid infrastructures that integrate both formal and community-based channels.
