Abstract

Worker bees actively forage to supply colony necessity i.e., pollens, nectar, and resin. Flight activities of the worker bees are influenced by food availability and environmental conditions. This study aimed to measure flight activities of Lepidotrigona terminata in terms of leaving and returning to the nest (including carrying of pollen and pollen type) and their relation to environmental conditions. The observation of flight activities of L. terminata were conducted from August to December 2016, at 07.00-17.00 for 1 minute with 1 hour interval. Pollen load and pollen types were analyzed by the acetolysis method. Flight activities of leaving and returning to the nest were lower at 07.00-08.00 (1 individual/min) and at 16.00-17.00 (2 individuals/min). However, the peak activities occurred at 10.00 until 13.00 (8 and 6 individuals/min for leaving and returning to the nest, respectively). Temperature and light intensity were positively correlated with flight activities of bees that carried nectar and resin, as well as leaving the nest without garbage. The returned workers averagely carried 32,696 pollen grains from four pollen types. Based on selection index values, this stingless bee species mostly preferred Araceae (â±³i=1.522) plant family for pollen resources to others, Anacardiaceae, Aceraceae, and Acanthaceae (x2=39.32, p<0.01).

Abstract

Studies on the diversity of nocturnal insects in the city of Palembang, especially in the Pertamina Bagus Kuning Complex, Palembang, are still limited, so it is necessary to carry out research on the diversity of nocturnal insects in the area. This study aims to determine the level of diversity of nocturnal insects active in the Pertamina Bagus Kuning Complex. This research was conducted in December 2022. This research was conducted using light traps as a place to catch nocturnal insects. The method used is a descriptive survey by direct observation of insects in the Pertamina Bagus Kuning Complex. The number of light traps used was 2 traps placed at 2 different stations, the light traps were placed at 18.00 WIB and collected the next day at 05.30 WIB. The results showed that nocturnal insects caught by light traps were 35 individuals from 8 species and 5 orders. The diversity of nocturnal insect species in the Pertamina Bagus Kuning Complex area based on Shannon-Weiner (H') of 1.74753679 is classified as moderate.

Abstract

Insects are vertebrate animals classified in the phylum Arthropoda. Insects are one of the animals that are very numerous, one of which is in the insecta class, so the presence of insects really affects the ecosystem. This research aims to determine the food preferences of leaf beetles (Epilachna varivestis) and oteng- oteng (Aulacophora similis) from several types of Solanceae plants. The samples used in this research were the leaf beetle Epilachna varivestis and oteng-oteng (Aulacophora similis) and 5 types of Solanaceae plant leaves including cayenne pepper leaves, bird chili leaves, eggplant leaves, ciplukan leaves and takokak leaves. This observation was carried out to find out 1). How long does it take for the beetle to find its food? 2). Which type of leaf is eaten first and which type of leaf is eaten the most? 3). How long does it take for a beetle to eat this type of food? 4). Is there a switching of the beetle's eating pattern? Based on the results of observations made, the leaf beetle Epilachna sp apparently preferred cayenne pepper leaves (Capsicum frutescens) for 30 minutes slowly and stopped by the other four leaves but was not eaten by the leaf beetle, the same as the leaf beetle, Oteng-oteng (Aulacophora similis) only liked one leaf, namely preferring eggplant (Solanum melongena) leaves for 30 minutes slowly and stopped the other four leaves but the oteng-oteng didn't eat them.

Abstract

The research about types of natural enemies of stinless bees Lepidotrigona terminata had been conducted in West Java. All natural enemis were identified morphologically and their habitat. There were 687 individuals of 14 species of natural enemies obtained in this research, i.e., Pseudeuophrys sp., Heliophanus sp., Argiope versicolor, Plexippus paykuli, Marpissa sp., Parasteatoda tepidariorum, Tegenaria sp., Nasutitermes javanicus, Paratrechina sp., Polyrhachis sp., Paratrechina longicornis, Rhynchium haemorrhoidale, Hemidactylus frenatus and Hemidactylus garnotii. Based on observation, spider, ants, and lizard were the predators of stingless bee. The results are expected as data and knowledge in the conservation and cultivation of stingless bees.

Abstract

Nocturnal insects are insects that are active at night. Nocturnal insects tend to have sharp vision, hearing and smell abilities at night. Penda Emas (Xanthostemon chrysanthus) is a flowering plant that produces nectar so that it is often attacked by various insects. Light trap is used as a nocturnal insect trap because insects are attracted to light and fragrant aromas. This research aims to identify nocturnal insects on Penda Emas plants (Xanthostemon chrysanthus) by looking at their body morphology. This research uses descriptive and qualitative methods. This method is an exploratory survey where research is carried out directly in the field. The tools used in this research were basins, lamps, insulation, raffia rope, tweezers, jars, scissors, styrofoam, needles, petri dishes, glass objects, microscopes, cameras, vials, jars, plastic and cotton. Meanwhile, the materials used are water, soap, chloroform and alcohol. The results of this research were that 10 insect species were found from 6 orders, namely the Hymenoptera order including the Tawon Kertas Dunia Lama (Ropalidia marginata), Semut Api (Solenopsis sp.), and Tawon Parasitoid (Meteorus sp.), then the Dyptera order including the Agas Jamur (Bradysia trivittata), Nyamuk (Aedes sp.), and Lalat Daging (Sarcophaga carnaria), Order Lepydoptera namely the Ngengat Hitam species (Neumichtis sp.), Order Isoptera namely the Laron species (Coptotermes sp.), Order Coleoptera namely the Kumbang Mawar Cina species (Adoretus sinicus), and the Order Trichoptera, namely the Nyamuk Mikro species (Agraylea sp.).
