Abstract

Langsa City has a wealth of plant species that need to be studied, especially bamboo plants. This study aims to explore the types of bamboo found in Langsa City. The study was conducted from April to July 2019 using the exploration method. The method of sample collection by purposive sampling. The results showed that in Langsa City there were found 4 genera bamboo namely Bambusa, Gigantochloa, Schizostachyum, and Thyrsostachys which consisted of 6 species of bamboo namely Bambusa multiplex (Lour.) Raeusch. Ex Schhult., Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. Ex Wendl., Gigantochloa apus (J.A. & J.H.Schult.) Kurz, Gigantochloa atter (Hassk.) Kurz, Schizostachyum brachycladum (Kurz) Kurz, and Thyrsostachys siamensis Gamble. The most widespread bamboo distribution in Langsa was found in Langsa Lama and Langsa Baro amounted to 5 species.

Abstract

Prior to initiating the conservation effort, conducting a bamboo species inventory in a specific area is crucial for obtaining information about the diversity status of the species in that region. Species inventorying is a fundamental step in ensuring that conservation efforts are targeted, effective, and based on sound scientific data. Regrettably, status of bamboo diversity in Sumatra is unavailable. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the status of bamboo diversity in Sumatra. The study gathered data from literature review. It covered bamboo species, their statuses (endemic, introduced, ex-situ conservation, and threatened), and encompassed the main Sumatra Island and surrounding smaller islands. Species were re-identified and validated. Conservation status was assessed based on IUCN categories. There are 73 species of bamboo in the Sumatra region, representing 10 genera: Bambusa (11 species), Chimonobambusa (1 species), Dendrocalamus (10 species), Dinochloa (2 species), Gigantochloa (26 species), Melocanna (1 species), Neololeba (1 species), Phyllostachys (1 species), Schizostachyum (19 species), and Thyrsostachys (1 species). Eighteen species of Sumatran bamboo are known as introduced species, and 30 species are endemic to Sumatra, with the majority belonging to Gigantochloa (15 species). The least represented are Bambusa and Dinochloa, each having one endemic species. Bambusa heterostachya, Dendrocalamus giganteus, and Dendrocalamus membranaceus fall into the “least concern” (LC) category on the IUCN Red List, while the remaining 70 species have not been evaluated. A total of 44 species have been planted (conserved) in botanical gardens in Indonesia, while the remaining 29 species have not yet been conserved.

Abstract

Desa Tuapejat adalah sebuah desa yang terletak di kepulauan Mentawai dengan hasil budidaya masyarakat salahsatunya adalah talas. Talas merupakan tanaman lokal yang melimpah di wilayah ini, namun pemanfaatannya masih terbatas pada konsumsi tradisional, dan bahkan talas kadang hanya dijadikan sebagai makanan ternak di wilayah tersebut. Untuk meningkatkan nilai perekonomian masyarakat maka telah dilakukan kegiatan pelatihan pengolahan umbi talas menjadi berbagai macam makanan di desa Tuapejat. Kegiatan diikuti oleh peserta mitra dengan latar belakang ibu rumah tangga dan anggota PKK desa Tuapejat. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam pengolahan umbi talas, meningkatkan diversifikasi produk olahan umbi talas untuk menciptakan nilai tambah dan untuk meningkatkan pendapatan masyarakat melalui pemasaran produk olahan talas. Program ini melibatkan sosialisasi dan praktik pembuatan berbagai olahan talas, seperti keripik talas dengan aneka rasa, nugget talas, cake talas, bola-bola talas isi cokelat, dodol talas cokelat, dan keripik talas balado. Peserta mitra diajarkan bagaimana pemilihan talas yang baik, cara mengupas, pengolahan dan pengemasan produk yang sudah jadi. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa para peserta, terutama ibu-ibu, mulai memproduksi dan menjual olahan berbasis talas secara kelompok maupun mandiri. Tim selalu memberikan pendampingan terhadap peserta mitra untuk memantau dan memberikan penyuluhan agar peserta mitra dapat meningkatkan produksi dan penjualannya. Kegiatan ini berkontribusi pada peningkatan keterampilan peserta serta membuka peluang usaha baru yang dapat meningkatkan pendapatan keluarga.
