Abstract

This study aims to analyze changes in the implementation of the Sayur Matua death ceremony in the Simalungun community in Saribu Dolok Village, Silimakuta District, Simalungun Regency. The method used is a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview technique with one key informant, namely Mr. Simarmata, a community leader who understands local traditions. The results of the study show that the implementation of the Sayur Matua ceremony has undergone various changes, both in terms of structure, symbols, and meaning. These changes are influenced by several main factors, including modernization, the entry of foreign culture, and shifts in social values among the younger generation. Traditional elements such as Gonrang Sipitu-pitu are still retained, although in a simpler form and not as complete as before. These findings show that there is a dynamic between cultural preservation and the need to adapt to the times. This research is expected to be a contribution to the study of local culture, as well as a consideration in efforts to preserve intangible cultural heritage, especially in the context of the Simalungun indigenous people.

Abstract

This study examines the preservation of the Jaran Kepang art form by Sanggar Wahyu Satrio Putro in Binjai City using a qualitative approach. The objectives of the research include: (1) adaptation and innovation without compromising traditional values, and (2) passing down Jaran Kepang to younger generations. Jaran Kepang is a traditional Javanese art that portrays the skills of horseback warriors through dynamic and captivating dance movements, accompanied by gamelan music. Although this art form has existed since the Majapahit Kingdom, its development outside Java, including in Binjai City, North Sumatra, reflects a cultural transformation. The study applies a qualitative method through non-participant observation, interviews, video recordings, and audio documentation. The findings reveal that the preservation of Jaran Kepang by Sanggar Wahyu Satrio Putro is not merely an act of safeguarding cultural heritage, but also a strategic effort to maintain the relevance of traditional arts in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of faith and culture in the celebration of the Stations of the Cross and Good Friday at GKPA Sibadoar, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency. Good Friday is an important day for Christians to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. This research aims to describe the manifestation of faith and culture in the Good Friday worship and the Stations of the Cross performance at GKPA Sibadoar. The study uses a qualitative approach with Koentjaraningrat’s Religious Ceremony Theory to analyze the worship, and Milton Singer’s Theory to describe the cultural performance. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and audio-video documentation. The results show that the Good Friday service at GKPA Sibadoar is conducted solemnly and simply, emphasizing Scripture readings, prayers, and reflections on Christ’s suffering, thus strengthening the congregation’s solidarity. The theatrical performance of the Stations of the Cross involving church youth serves as a medium for transmitting faith and expressing local culture. Furthermore, the hymns sung during worship feature strophic melodic patterns, predominantly stepwise intervals, and hanging contours that support the contemplative atmosphere. This study reveals a harmonious integration between religious and cultural values in the celebration of the Stations of the Cross and Good Friday at GKPA Sibadoar, which strengthens the congregation’s faith while preserving local culture
