Abstract

                                           ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Analisis Reinkarnasi dalam Film A Dog’s Purpose yang Disutradarai oleh Lasse Hallstrom”. It is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this research is about the reincarnation delineated and the impact of reincarnation towards the character in the Film A Dog’s Purpose. This research includes the concept of reincarnation, film analysis, and character analysis. The writer used two theories, such as the theory of film analysis by Klarer in his book “An Introduction to Literary Studies” (2005) and the theory of character analysis written by Stanton in his book “Introduction to Fiction” (1965) to identify, describe and analyze the data. The result of this research shows that there are four reincarnations that occurred in this film, such as first reincarnation, second reincarnation, third reincarnation, and forth reincarnation. Each reincarnations has several unique impacts of reincarnation towards other characters in the film.Keywords: Reincarnation, Character, Film, A Dog’s Purpose, Dog, Impact

Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Hedonism as reflected in a film The Great Gatsby” is a research that mainly focused on the analysis of hedonism lifestyle; aspects and properties in the film namely. This research emphasize the theory from Well & Tiger the AIO to search the form of aspects of hedonism in the film meanwhile the theory mise en scéne to search the used of properties in the film, by the end, the results shows two findings, they are; First, from Well & Tiger interest include The Jazz Age and the flapper, activities include Wall Street illegal businesses, and opinions include the characterization of the characters. Secondly as the results of properties from the theory of mise en scéne there are; alcohol, Rolls Royce, and branded fashion that pictured the hedonism style itself.Keywords: The aspects of hedonism, The Jazz Age, Hedonism lifestyle.

Abstract

                                            ABSTRACTThis research is entitled "a psychopathic analysis of Michael Myers in the Halloween film produced by David Green." The thing that is done to research this research is that the writer first watches the film and then understands the contents of the story after that the writer collects data analysis or discussion Internet and this research also uses Stanton's theory of psychopathic characteristics in Michael Myers and this study also aims to identify psychopathic characteristics and also analyzes the factors that cause the main character to become a psychopath. It can be caused by several factors, for example, such as environmental factors, movies and also the internet and from this psychopath disease it can harm us, such as the occurrence of criminal acts. It is hoped that this research can be useful for readers and further researchers so that this research can be used as a reference, especially in analyzing psychopathic characters through film objects.Keywords: Psychopathic analysis, characteristics, films

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACTThis Skripsi entitled “Anxiety in the Novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher” is intended to be one of the requirements to accomplish the “Sarjana” at the Faculty of Humanities Manado. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the kind of „anxiety‟ and the effect of „anxiety‟ to the characters in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The characterization of the characters, include the identification of „anxiety‟ are described. In terms of methodology, the combination of two approaches applied namely the intrinsic as well as the extrinsic ones. The concept of „anxiety‟ and its categories include the characters, are two concepts representing the extrinsic and the extrinsic ones. The psychological theory about anxiety by Freud in Minderop (2010) and supported theory by Davison, Neale and Kring (2012) and also paradigm by Roberts (1983) are used to be completed by a descriptive analysis. The results of this research show that the characters Clay Jensen, Hannah Baker and Mr. Potter tend to have anxiety. Clay Jensen categorized as objective anxiety and classified in phobia disorder, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, Hannah Baker has objective anxiety and classified in panic disorder and post traumatic disorder, and Mr. Porter has objective anxiety. The effects are recklessness of the character Clay Jensen and depression of the character Hannah Baker and Mr. Porter. Abstract

                                                 ABSTRACT       This research is entitled “Idioms in the Serial Film John Wick by Chad Stahelski”. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the kind of idioms, as well as to analyze and describe the meaning of idioms in the serial film John Wick by Chad Stahelski. The descriptive method is used in this research. The data were collected from the film John Wick Series 1, 2 and 3, then analyzed based on the theory of Fernando (1996) and Heasley (2007). The result of this research shows that idioms can be found in three kinds. The idioms are pure idioms, semi pure idioms and literal idioms. The meaning of idioms cannot be understood if translated literally but idioms can be understood through the context being discussed. This research can provide knowledge about the meaning of idioms in semantic studies, especially for readers. It also can help students of the Faculty of Humanities, especially students majoring in English Department to examine idioms in using different objects. This research can be used as a reference for further research as well.Key Words: Idioms, Form and Meaning, The Series Film John Wick, Semantic Analysis.

Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT        This research is entitled “Orientasi seksual dalam film Brokeback Mountain karya sutradara Ang Lee”. It is written to fulfill the requirements to complete undergraduate education majoring in English literature, Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. This study focuses on the sexual orientation depicted by the actors in the movie Brokeback Mountain. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by Bogdan and Biklen (1982) and used two theories to identify, classify, describes and analyze types of sexual orientation in Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain, the theory is the theory of J. Michael Bailey in his journal “ Sexual Orientation, Controversy, and Science” (2016) and theory from Mario Klarer in his book “An Introduction to Literary Studies” (2005). Based on the analysis of sexual orientation in the film Brokeback Mountain, it was found that the two main actors Ennis and Jack have an interest in each other, but on the other hand they have wives so it can be concluded that the two main characters in this film have a sexual orientation, namely bisexual.Keywords : Sexual Orientation, Literature and psychology, Film, Brokeback Mountain

Abstract

                                                  ABSTRACT       This research is entitled “Striving for Superiority of August as Seen in Wonder Film” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the bachelor’s degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. This research focus on the psychological condition of August, the actions striving for superiority of August. The purposes of this research are to identify, classify, analyze, and describe the striving for superiority actions of August and the factor that causes the striving for superiority of August. This research used descriptive qualitative method by Bogdan and Biklen (1982). In identifying, classifying, and analyzing the data, the writer used two theories of individual psychology by Adler to analyze the striving for superiority and to analyze the factor causes striving for superiority by Adler (in Boeree, 2005:135). The results of this research are August did two actions striving for superiority, that are compensation and superiority complex. The factor that causes the striving for superiority of August is an action for filling of a desire and potential, which encourages for attaining of a goal.Keywords: Superiority, Inferiority, Wonder, Psychology

Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This research entitles “Expressive act in the Film Divergent by Neil Burger”. The aims of this research is to identify, classify, and analyze the expressive act utterances and their functions in Divergent film. This research used descriptive method. The data were collected from conversation among characters, then classified and analyzed according to the concept of Searle (1970). In collecting the data, the writer reads some pragmatic books pertaining to expressive act. After that, the writer watch the film and looks the whole story of the film to obtain good understanding of the context of the story in the film. Then the writer identified and classified the data into function of expressive act. The collected data were analyzed descriptively in terms of the function of expressive act found in the film Divergent based on Searle’s theory. The research showes that the expressive act can be categorized into six categories, those are apologizing, pardoning, praising, thanking, congratulating, and condoling, and how the function of expressive act used by the characters. Abstract

WATASEN, S.S., M.Hum3     This research is entitled “Tone in A.E Housman Poems”, the topic that focused on five poems based on purposive sampling. The objective of this research is to identify, clasify and analyze the data also describe the tone in figurative language of those poems. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from A.E Housman poems, and in analyzing the data, it used theory by Laurence Perrine (2018; 863), and the theory also support by Edgar Roberts (1983: 138). The result of this research shows that the tones in A.E Housman poems consist of; praise, death, optimistic, worship, sympathy, cynic, sad, and antipathy. Abstract

                                                   ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Rags to Riches as Reflcted in the Film A Knight’s Tale by Brian Hegland” It is research that focuses on Rags to Riches analysis, particulary showing the idea based on American Dream concept that riches is not the impotant element to live but happiness. In identifying, classifying, and analyzing the data, the writer uses the theory of McGlinn (2005) about the idea of rags to riches, and the theory of Literature by Wellek and Warren (1956) in order to analyze the intrinsic approach. The method employed in this research is descriptive method by Fraenkel dan Wallen (1993). The writer analyzes the idea of Rags to Riches found in the movie A Knight’s Tale by looking at the characters, plot, setting, but mainly on the main character: what the person says, what the person doesincluding, what the person thinks; what others say about the main character, what others do (that may help indicating what the main character could do and does not do). The data were collected from the movie entitled A Knight’s Tale. The result of this study shows that there are three elements reflected by the character of the movie regarding to the idea of Rags to Riches; they are: hardworking which divides into plan, sacrifice, and motivation; personality which consists of kindhearted, helpful, dilligent, respectful, and responsible: luck which has two types such as sudden luck and undefined luck. There are also four parts of characterization development includes personal description, opinion and disposition, talks, and reaction.Keywords: Rags to Riches, American Dream, Characterization Development.
