Teaching writing in senior high schools provides students with knowledge, experience and strategies of writing simple texts to more complex ones. This research aims at looking at how writing skills are taught at senior high schools in Riau Province-Indonesia. Specifically, the research answers the research questions about teaching materials, methods/strategies used by English teachers in the teaching of writing and students’ attitude towards writing skills. The samples are second year English Department students of FKIP Riau University coming from different cities and regencies in Riau Province. The data were collected through distributing a set of questionnaire. The results show that most writing materials consist of linguistics knowledge such as sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation and lack of writing skills and strategies like brainstorming, drafting, revising and editing. Moreover, most teachers are product oriented in their teaching of writing. Finally, most students (65.9) have low attitude towards writing skills. From these findings, it can be concluded that: writing materials need to be focussed on writing skills and strategies, teachers’ knowledge and skills on teaching methods/strategies need to be upgraded and students’ attitude towards writing skills needs to be improved. These findings can be used as a reference to do some improvement in the teaching of writing in senior high schools in Riau province.

There were 40 students from 6A class chosen as samples. The instruments were translation and writing tests. The translation test aims to measure the ability of the students in translating an Indonesian-English text. The writing test aims to measure the students’ ability in writing a descriptive essay. The data were obtained by calculating the translation and writing test results. Based on the calculation, it was found that the students have good translation and writing ability. Besides, the value of the correlation coefficient obtained was 0.521 which means that there is a positive correlation between students’ translation and writing ability. The correlation is categorized as fair correlation since the value of the correlation coefficient obtained is 0.521 which is in the range of 0.400 - 0.599. Considering the fact that there is a correlation between students’ translation and writing ability, it is suggested that the students should also concern about and improve their translation ability because it will also improve their writing skill.

This research was aimed at analysing students' strategies in giving compliments. This was descriptive qualitative research using a qualitative approach accompanied by descriptive statistics. This research involved 39 EFL students as the participants in the academic year 2019/2020 selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a DCT (Discourse Completion Test) containing several situations where the students were expected to give their compliments. The result showed that the students used many kinds of strategies in giving compliments. The explicit strategy was the most used by the students. Furthermore, the single explicit strategy appeared the most within overall strategies that appeared in the DCT. This implied that the students prefer to give a direct and simple compliment. One strategy in giving compliments appeared out of the classification which is congratulation attached to an unbound semantic formula.

This quasi-experimental research aims at looking at the effect of Journal Writing technique on the ability in writing a paragraph. Specifically, the research answers the research questions about the students’ ability in writing, the effect of Journal Writing technique on the students’ ability in writing, and the students’ attitude toward Journal Writing technique applied in their Writing class. The sample are one class from the second semester of English Department students in 20172018 academic year. The data were collected through writing tests and the distribution of a set of questionnaires. From the results, nearly 60% of students’ ability in writing is at Average to Good level before the treatment. After the treatment, 56.76% of their ability is at Good to Excellent level. To test whether the increased score is statistically significant or not, the data were analyzed using t-test. Having t-obs (8.26) which is higher than t-table (2.030), there is a plausible reason to believe that the teaching of writing using Journal Writing technique significantly affects the students’ ability in writing paragraph. The data from questionnaire showed nearly 64% students have ‘high’ attitude toward Journal Writing technique applied in their class.
