Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study was conducted by using One-Group Pretest-Posttest design to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using ‘Six Thinking Hats Strategy’ on the ability of the second year students of SMP Telkom Pekanbaru in comprehending recount text. The sample of the research was 31 students of class VIII.b and obtained by using simple random sampling technique. 25 multiple choices of recount text was the instrument of the test. The students’ scores were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel 2010 and Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) 23.0 for windows. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (64.64>52.25). Then, it also showed that t-test was higher than t-table (10.51>2.04) at significance level of 5%. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using‘Six Thinking Hats Strategy’ on the ability of the second year students of SMP Telkom Pekanbaru in comprehending recount text.Key Words: Effect, Six Thinking Hats, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstrack: The research was aimed to find out the effect of gallery walk strategy toward students reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The design of this research was quasi-experimental research with an experimental group and control group pre-test and post-test. These two groups were selected to be a sample by using cluster random sampling. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that t-test score was 2.351 while the t-table was 2.001. Since t-test score was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of gallery walk strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.Key Words: Reading, Reading Comprehension, Gallery Walk

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out if there is a significant correlation between the interest in listening to English songs and vocabulary mastery of the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The sample of this research consisted of 36 students which was taken by using Cluster Random Sampling Technique. The data were collected through questionnaire in order to measure students’ interest in listening to English songs and AVK test to measure students’ vocabulary mastery. The results showed that the students have high interest in listening to English songs and have average ability in mastering vocabulary through Aural Vocabulary Knowledge (AVK). Further, the significant correlation was discovered between both variables with a moderately positive correlation.Key Words: Interest, Listening, English Songs, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru in comprehending hortatory exposition text. This research focuses on students’ comprehension about hortatory exposition text in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, finding meaning of difficult word, finding references, finding restatement, identifying the generic structure, language feature and social function .The data were collected using the multiple choice test. The test contained 40 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the result of the data analysis, it is found out that main idea (56.25) is classified as mediocre, the mean score of finding factual information is also (56.25) and classified as mediocre, the mean score of finding meaning of vocabulary (64.06) is classified as good. Meanwhile, the mean score of finding reference (64.38) is classified as good, the mean score of finding restatement (68.4) is classified as good. Meanwhile the mean score for the generic structure is (61.8) classified as good, the mean score for identifying language feature is (68.7) classified as good, and the last one is the result of the mean score of the identifying social function (63.7) is classified as good also. As whole, the researcher got the final result for the students’ ability in comprehending hortatory exposition text is (63.04), it means that the student ability is classified as good.Keywords : Study, Ability, Hortatory exposition text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether or not the use of Task-Based Learning method can improve the reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 2 Teluk Kuantan. The type of the research is a classroom action research. The subject was class VIII5 which consists of 31 students. Test and observation sheets were used as instruments to collect the data. Test used to measure the students’ progress in every cycle during the classroom action research. This test consisted of pre-test and post-test. Observation sheets used to observe the teacher’s and students' activities in the classroom. The level of achievement in this research was 75, based on the standard minimum criteria of achievement of English subject in SMPN 2 Teluk Kuantan. The research finding showed that the implementation of Task-Based Learing method could improve the reading comprehension of the students at the first and second cycle. Based on the data analysis, the students’ scores improved from 59,03 in pre-test to 77,90 in post-test. Thus, the implementation of Task-Based Learning method could improve the reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 2 Teluk Kuantan.Key Words: Task-Based Learning Method, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This Pre-experimental research aims to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using Two Stay Two Stay Strategy on reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kandis. The sample of this research is 35 students of XI IPA 1 chosen by cluster random sampling. To measure the students’ reading comprehension level, pre-test and post-test in form of recount text are given before and after treatment. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 52.27 and the mean score of post-test is 79.92. It means the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. In addition, the value of t-obs is higher than t-table (11.66>2.03). Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kandis.Key Words: Effect, Two Stay Two Stray Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Recount Text.

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out the perception of the third yearRambah Samo junior high school students toward Whatsapp for English learningmedium. This research uses quantitative method with a survey approach. The sample forthis research included 42 third year SMPN 5, Rambah Samo who experienced in learningEnglish through WhatsApp as learning medium. The instrument of this research was aquestionnaire using a Likert-type scale. Based on the recapitulation of perceptionindicators, it is known that the third year students of SMPN 5 Rambah Samo goodtowards this learning medium. The score obtained is 74.4. They admit that WhatsApp isan interesting learning medium. This can increase their self-confidence, create creativityin thinking, encourage them participate well and bravely in group discussions. On top ofthat, using WhatsApp they can understand the material better. And they admit that, using WhatsApp as a learning medium is time and cost efficiency.Key Words: Perception, WhatsApp, Learning Medium.

Abstract

bstract: Code-switching is a term in linguistics referring to using more than onelanguage or variety in conversation. Code-switching occurs when a speaker alternates between two or more language (bilingualism/multilingualism) or language varieties. The phenomenon of code-switching in Indonesia nowadays is quite easy to find and use by many people, especially in the South Jakarta, as they called the people who use code switching as “Anak Jaksel”. This study analyzes the types and reason of code switching that occurs in a YouTube Podcast of Deddy Corbuzier entitled The Art of Being Poor episode. The research is using a qualitative method, the researcher collecting the data through the utterances of host and source person in the video. The total of 94 data from the whole 69 minutes duration of the video is showing Intra-sentential type is the most showing type, representing 55 times (59%) of the total number of code switching occurences. While the most showing type is Talking about particular topic, representing 42 times (45%) of the total number of code switching occurences. These finding is imperative for educators to comprehend the functions and motivations behind code switching. When being use appropriately, code switching can serve as a valuable tool to enhance student learning and facilitate more effective teaching practices. By broadening their understanding of code switching, students can enrich their knowledge of English and enhance their communication skills.Key Words: Analysis, Code-switching, YouTube Podcast.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to determine whether there is any significantcorrelation between watching English-subtitled movies and the vocabulary mastery ofsecond-semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. Thisresearch used a correlational research design. The number of samples were 38 studentsof the second-semester English Study Program. This study used a probability samplingmethod. In conducting this research, the researcher used questionnaire to obtaininformation on the students’ activity of watching English-subtitled and vocabulary test(VLT) to find out students’ vocabulary mastery. The data were analyzed by using SPSS21 Version. The findings and results of the research showed that the correlation betweenwatching English-subtitled movies and their vocabulary mastery is very strong.Key Words: Correlation, Watching English-Subtitled Movies, Vocabulary Mastery
