Abstract

Abstract: Mangroves are one of the coastal ecosystems with high productivity, and their associated biodiversity provides a range of ecosystem services. The aerial roots of mangroves partly stabilize this environment and give a substratum on which many species of plants and animals live. Above the water, the mangrove trees and canopy provide important habitat for a wide range of species. These include birds, insects, mammals, and reptiles. Below the water, the mangrove roots are overgrown by epibionts such as tunicates, sponges, algae, and bivalves. The soft substratum in the mangroves forms a habitat for various infaunal and epifaunal species. At the same time, the space between roots provides shelter and food for motile fauna, such as prawns, crabs, and fishes. Mangrove litter is transformed into detritus, which partly supports the mangrove food web. Plankton, epiphytic algae, and microphytobenthos also form an essential basis for the mangrove food web. Due to the high abundance of food and shelter, and low predation pressure, mangroves form an ideal habitat for a variety of animal species, during part or all of their life cycles. As such, mangroves may function as nursery habitats for (commercially important) crab, prawn and fish species, and support offshore fish populations and fisheries.

Abstract

Mangroves play a vital role as bioindicator plants in port areas with the potential for non-essential heavy metal contamination. This study aimed to determine the potential for phytoremediation of lead heavy metal in mangrove vegetation resulting from port operations. The research was conducted in the mangrove ecosystem of Lembar Harbor, West Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Substrate, leaf, and root samples were collected using a purposive random sampling technique and analysis for testing the lead heavy metal content using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed that the average heavy metal content of lead accumulated in the substrate in each mangrove stand (14.35 ± 2.711 ppm) was higher than the average heavy metal content in the roots (5.48 ± 2.300 ppm) and leaves (3.55 ± 1.623 ppm). Further analysis showed that nine out of 10 mangrove species act as a phytostabilizer against the lead heavy metal with an average translocation factor of no more than one (0.59 ± 0.176). Only Rhizophora stylosa showed the ability for phytoextraction with a translocation factor more than one (1.488). All types of mangroves in the Lembar Harbor area had a bioconcentration factor lower than one, with an average leaf bioconcentration factor of 0.25 ± 0.115 ppm and a root bioconcentration factor of 0.39 ± 0.161 ppm. The ecological function of the mangroves in Lembar Harbor is more specifically an excluder plant for lead heavy metal bioaccumulation with a biological concentration factor (BCF) < 1 and phytoremediation (FTD) < 1, which can be affected by the low accumulated BCF of leaves and roots.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the morphometric anatomical wings of the fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis Complex. The species used in this study consisted of 11 (eleven) species. The analysis technique of the wings of Bactrocera dorsalis Complex, i.e. the right wing of each individual was analyzed using Morphometric landmarks with 15 anatomical points. Digital images of wings are scaled in size and scale using Adobe Photoshop CS3 software. The results of anatomical point digitization are processed into MorphoJ software v. 1.06b. Digitization data of anatomical points of wing shape was collected using Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA).  The results of the Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA) showed that there was a grouping of each species. The grouping of Bactrocera dorsalis complex wing types is based on the similarity of the percentage of cumulative values of CVA1 and CVA2 tests. Groups B. carambolae, B. minuscula, B. occipitalis, B. papayae, B. floresiae, B. philippinennsis, Bactrocera sp. 23, Bactrocera sp. 25, and Bactrocera sp. 26 grouped because they have similarities in wing venation. The difference in wing venation is found in Bactrocera sp. 27 and B. sumbawaensis because they are far from the group B. carambolae, B. minuscula, B. occipitalis, B. papayae, B. floresiae, B. philippinennsis, Bactrocera sp. 23, Bactrocera sp. 25, and Bactrocera sp. 26.
