Abstract

The Way Besai Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) is located in West Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, with a capacity of 90.4 MW and utilizes water from the Way Besai River. The availability of stable water discharge is highly dependent on the vegetation conditions in the catchment area. This study aims to examine the diversity of flora and vegetation sustainability in the Way Besai hydropower plant area using an exploration method divided into six observation lines. The results showed that there were 57 types of plants belonging to 21 families. The most common species are sonokeling (Dalbergia latifolia) with 140 individuals and seripit (Crypteronia paniculata) with 113 individuals. The families with the highest number of species are obtained from the families Moraceae and Fabaceae. The types of the Moraceae family are dominated by Ficus spp., which acts as a source of animal feed, while from the Fabaceae family, there are more types of multipurpose plants (MPTS). The diversity of species and evenness of flora around the Way Besai hydropower plant is relatively high, as shown by the diversity index value (H') of 3.281 and the evenness index value (E) of 0.812. Although this value is relatively high, the maintenance and conservation of flora still needs to be carried out intensively to maintain the stability of the water discharge of the Way Besai River. These results confirm that the vegetation around the Way Besai hydropower plant is still relatively sustainable, but sustainable conservation efforts are needed to control land conversion that has the potential to reduce the water discharge of the Way Besai River.

Abstract

Marginal land is land that has various limiting factors that inhibit plant growth, both in terms of its physical and chemical aspects. This condition is generally formed due to anthropogenic activities that significantly change soil characteristics. One example occurred at the Itera Botanical Gardens, specifically during the construction of the Sumatra Embung (reservoir). The Sumatra Embung construction process caused excavated soil to be stockpiled in the surrounding area, resulting in changes in the soil profile and physical and chemical properties. Soil quality degradation is reflected in the suppressed growth performance of plants around the reservoir area. Species of plants have been planted at the location with different initial treatments. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the growth rate of Casuarina equisetifolia treated with block compost four months after planting in the field. This study used a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with a split-plot design. Data analysis used Minitab 19 software, followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% level. Observed parameters included plant height, stem diameter, and canopy width. The LSD test results showed that the K2 treatment (without mycorrhiza + block compost formula 2) provided the best growth response across all observed parameters. Plant heiht K2 increased by 111.33 cm, diameter by 1 cm, and canopy width by 75.9 cm. These results confirm that block compost has slow-release properties, as evidenced by consistent plant growth trends as in previous studies. Meanwhile, the application of mycorrhiza did not show a significant increase in growth compared to the treatment without mycorrhiza.

The global population status of the Long-Tailed Macaque (LTM/Macaca fascicularis) was recently reassessed, resulting in its reclassification from Vulnerable to Endangered due to an estimated population decline of approximately 40% over the past three generations. To better understand and validate its updated IUCN status, we conducted a population study on Tabuan, Legundi, and Umang-umang Islands in Lampung Province, located in the southern region of Sumatra, Indonesia. On the other hand, management challenges arise due to its current International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status, even though it is locally regarded as a pest by the local population. To establish effective and sustainable management strategies, updated population data is crucial, particularly in regions with limited information. This research aimed to address the need for population status data in Sumatra. As part of a broader study focusing on the distribution of M. fascicularis in Sumatra, this study specifically targets the understudied small islands located in the southern region of Sumatra Island. The research was conducted from April 25 to May 4, 2024, on three islands within Lampung Province: Tabuan, Legundi, and Umang-umang Islands. Data were collected using the transect method, covering a total distance of 43.42 km. The findings revealed an estimated total population of approximately 9,948 M. fascicularis individuals, distributed as follows: 6,523 on Tabuan Island, 3,415 on Legundi Island, and a single group of around 10 individuals on Umang-umang Island. These findings provide insights into previously underrecognized and underpublicized populations of LTM in Southern Sumatra, elucidate the potential for colonization of new territories by LTM on the surveyed islands, and underscore conflicts with local communities in specific areas. Therefore, it is imperative to intensify management efforts to improve habitat conditions, mitigate conflicts, and enhance the overall success of LTM conservation and management strategies.
