Abstract

Deforestation makes a loss of 30.2% of the forest on Borneo from 1973 – 2010. Information about tree species has been logged still few. The aim of this study is to identify the types of trees that are sought and logged on Gunung Palung National Park. The method used was interviews with 45 loggers who had joined the UMKM program in collaboration between Yayasan ASRI, Health in Harmony, and Gunung Palung National Park Office. A field survey was conducted to find out the number of active loggers cutting down on Gunung Palung National Park. The result identified 15 families as tree species which mostly logged inside the park. Bengkirai (Shorea laevis Ridl.) and meranti (Shorea Roxb. Ex C.F.Gaertn.) are the most logged trees species. The frequency of logging can cut down a tree on average 10.6 trees per week or 533 trees a year for one logger. On 2018, the park already lost 34,286 trees from logging activity. The information about logged trees species is important for the conservation effort. Especially how to save species that are vulnerable and endangered.

Abstract

Monitoring forest cover to find out deforestation activities in a national park serves as an important task. This study aims to analyze forest cover changes in Gunung Palung National Park from 1989 to 2018. The method employs visual interpretation aided by supervised classification with the maximum likelihood method. Remote sensing data involved 18 Landsat images from 1989 to 2018 path/row 121/61. The results indicated that Gunung Palung National Park had 97,148 hectares of primary forest losing its 10% of its forest (since 1989). The primary forest decreased to 72,684 hectares in 1997 and 69,851 hectares in 2018. To date, primary forest cover has been found stable with secondary forests reaching to 25,050 hectares occupying 26% of Gunung Palung National Park area. Deforestation in Gunung Palung National Park was due to illegal logging and forest fires as a result of El Nio influence. The results of the analysis informed that there was an insignificant deforestation in Gunung Palung National Park during in the period of 2016 - 2018. In sum, conservation programs are encouraged to sustain, despite a decline in deforestation activities at Gunung Palung National Park. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis perubahan tutupan hutan di TN Gunung Palung dari tahun 1989 2018. Metode yang digunakan adalah visual dibantu dengan klasifikasi terselia dengan metode maximum likelihood. Data penginderaan jauh yang digunakan adalah 18 citra Landsat tahun 1989 2018 path/row 121/61. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sejak tahun 1989 TN Gunung Palung memiliki hutan primer seluas 97.148 hektar atau telah kehilangan 10% hutannya. Luas hutan primer menurun menjadi 72.684 hektar di tahun 1997 dan menjadi 69.851 hektar ditahun 2018. Saat ini kondisi tutupan hutan primer dalam kondisi stabil dengan hutan sekunder mencapai 25.050 hektar atau 26% dari luas TN Gunung Palung. Deforestasi di TN Gunung Palung disebabkan oleh pembalakan liar dan kebakaran hutan akibat pengaruh El Nio. Hasil analisis tidak ditemukan deforestasi di TN Gunung Palung selama rentang 2016 2018. Program konservasi harus tetap dilakukan walaupun telah terjadi penurunan aktivitas deforestasi di TN Gunung Palung.Kata kunci: Taman Nasional Gunung Palung, konservasi hutan, deforestasi

Abstract

Cajuput oil plays a pivotal role in the production of various products, particularly essential oils. This growing demand has led to increased exploitation of woody plants, raising concerns about the sustainability of raw material supply. To support the cajuput oil industry, silvicultural interventions such as optimizing planting techniques are essential. The optimal growth of cajuput seedlings is a critical factor in ensuring successful cultivation and consistent production. One alternative to enhance seedling growth is the use of kasgot (maggot residue) as a weaning medium. Kasgot, a by-product of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larval digestion process, has been recognized for its potential to improve soil and growing media fertility. This study aimed to determine the most effective dosage of kasgot for promoting the growth of Melaleuca cajuputi seedlings. The research was conducted over a two month (January"“March 2025) at the Forestry Nursery of the Kupang State Agricultural Polytechnic. A completely randomized design (CRD) was employed, with five treatment compositions of weaning media: MK0 (soil:sand = 1:1), MK1 (soil:sand:kasgot = 1:1:1), MK2 (1:1:2), MK3 (1:1:3), and MK4 (1:1:4). Each treatment was replicated three times. The results demonstrated that the MK1 treatment (1:1:1 ratio of soil, sand, and kasgot) was the most effective in supporting the growth of cajuput seedlings. Keywords: cajuput, growth, seedling, weaning medium. Abstrak Minyak kayu putih memiliki peran penting untuk mendukung berbagai macam produk, terutama minyak atsiri. Hal ini berpengaruh terhadap lonjakan ekspoitasi tanaman kayu yang dikhawatirkan akan berdampak pada terbatasnya suplai produk. Upaya silvikultur yang dapat dilakukan untuk industri minyak kayu putih adalah optimalisasi kegiatan penanaman. Pertumbuhan yang optimal dari semai kayu putih sangat penting untuk memastikan keberhasilan budidaya dan produksi. Penggunaan kasgot sebagai media sapih merupakan salah satu alternatif yang dapat digunakan untuk memaksimalkan pertumbuhan tanaman kayu putih. Kasgot (bekas maggot) adalah sisa proses pencernaan makanan dari belatung maggot lalat tentara hitam (BSF) yang dapat meningkatkan kesuburan tanah dan media tanam. Riset ini bertujuan mengkaji dosis yang efektif dari pemberian kasgot terhadap pertumbuhan semai Melaleuca cajuputi. Riset ini dilakukan selama dua bulan (Januari-Maret 2025) di Persemaian Jurusan Kehutanan, Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Kupang. Riset ini menerapkan rancangan acak lengkap. Perlakuannya adalah media sapih yang terdiri dari komposisi tanah, pasir dan kasgot. MK0: (1:1), MK1: (1:1:1), MK2: (1:1:2), MK3: (1:1:3) dan MK4: (1:1:4), dan diulang sebanyak 3 kali. Hasilnya menginformasikan jika kombinasi media sapih paling efektif untuk pertumbuhan semai kayu putih adalah perlakuan MK1 (tanah + pasir + kasgot) (1:1:1). Abstract

Kayu lontar (Borassus flabellifer L.) merupakan salah satu jenis palma yang potensial dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan konstruksi, kerajinan, maupun bioenergi, namun informasi mengenai karakteristik kimiawinya masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis komponen kimia kayu lontar asal Pulau Timor secara kuantitatif. Sampel berupa serbuk kayu ukuran 40–60 mesh dari tiga bagian batang (pangkal, tengah, ujung) kemudian dicampurkan agar mewakili variasi sifat kayu sepanjang batang, kemudian dicampurkan untuk mendapatkan hasil yang lebih merata dan representatif. Pengujian yang dianalisis meliputi kadar air, holoselulosa, alfa selulosa, lignin, zat ekstraktif (air dingin, air panas, etanol-toluena, NaOH 1%), serta pH. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kandungan kadar air 9,35%, lignin 23,91%, holoselulosa 79%, alfa selulosa 43,57%, serta pH 3,53. Kandungan ekstraktif relatif tinggi, yaitu etanol-toluena 17,62%, larut air panas 8,33%, larut air dingin 6,57%, dan larut NaOH 25,19%. Komposisi ini menunjukkan bahwa kayu lontar memiliki kadar polisakarida struktural yang tinggi serta ekstraktif non-polar dan polar yang berperan dalam meningkatkan ketahanan alami terhadap jamur dan rayap, namun pH asam dapat memengaruhi kestabilan dimensi serta interaksi dengan bahan perekat dan logam. Secara keseluruhan, kayu lontar berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan bangunan, kerajinan, dan sumber bioenergi, dengan perlakuan pengawetan tambahan untuk meningkatkan durabilitasnya baik di interior maupun eksterior.

Abstract

Teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) is a plant that produces raw materials for the wood industry, which is very popular due to its high quality and selling value. Procurement of teak seeds can be done in two ways: generatively and vegetatively. One problem in cultivating this plant is the inhibition of seed germination due to dormancy. Teak roots experience physical inactivity, namely tough skin. One technique that can be used to break seed dormancy is through chemical treatment. This study aims to determine the concentration of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and the appropriate soaking time to break the teak seeds dormancy. This research was conducted for two months in the Permanent Nursery of the Department of Forestry, State Agricultural Polytechnic of Kupang, from 15 November 2022 until 15 January 2023. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor was the concentration of a sulfuric acid solution (control: K0, 75% H2SO4: K1, 80% H2SO4: K2, and 85% H2SO4: K3). The second factor was the soaking time (T1: 45 minutes, T2: 50 minutes, and T3: 55 minutes). The two factors was combined to produce 12 treatment combinations as a whole. Each treatment was repeated three times and used ten seeds, so the total seeds used were 360 seeds. The results showed that there was an interaction between the concentration of sulfuric acid solution (H2SO4) with soaking time length, where the combination of 75% sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration and 45 minutes of soaking time gave higher results than other treatments, so it can be said that this combination is better at breaking teak seed dormancy.

Abstract

Manganese (Mn) mining in North Central Timor results in open land conditions that can change soil qualities. The aim of this study was to determine physical characteristics and chemical properties of the soil in the ex-manganese mining areas. The study was performed from June – September 2021. Soil characterization was carried out at selected locations where manganese mining was carried out both traditionally and using technology. The soil characteristics measured were texture, water content, bulk density, mass density, porosity, organic matter content, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic C, total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P), total potassium (K), and total Mn. The results showed that the physical characteristics of the soil on ex-Mn mining land from 5 villages in TTU, NTT are dominated by sand texture which results in low water content (3.39 - 9.46 %), soil porosity (14.96 - 59.31 %), and high bulk density (1.18 - 1.49 g cm-3). Characteristics of soil chemical properties showed low pH (< 7), organic matter (0.06 – 0.81%), organic C (0.03 – 0.22 %), total N contents (0.05 – 0.22%), and high total P (14.77 – 61.44 me 100 g-), K (66.66 – 71.18 me 100 g-), and Mn (18.802 – 24.055 ppm) contents. Land must be reclaimed Reclamation can be done by land management, top soil conservation, planting pioneer crops or cover crops.

Abstract

Palmyra wood (Borassus flabellifer L) is a widely distributed palm species in tropical Asia, including East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Its wood has potential applications in construction, handicrafts, and bioenergy, making anatomical and fiber morphology studies essential for understanding its value and utilization. This research used palmyra wood samples from Timor Island, Kupang, in the form of discs with a diameter of approximately 30 cm, taken from the base, middle, and upper parts of the stem. Test specimens were prepared in 2 × 2 × 5 cm dimensions, and analyses were conducted following standard procedures. The results revealed that palmyra wood possesses anatomical characteristics typical of palms, namely collateral closed-type vascular bundles irregularly scattered within parenchymatous ground tissue, with phloem located outside the xylem. Fiber morphology exhibited a gradual reduction in dimensions from the base to the tip of the stem, with fiber diameters ranging from 38.48 to 15.64 µm, wall thickness from 17.09 to 6.92 µm, and lumen diameters from 13.02 to 5.42 µm. The number of vascular bundles also decreased from 3.0 at the base to 1.21 at the tip, with bundle density ranging from 0.49 to 0.20/mm². Overall, palmyra wood exhibits stronger mechanical properties at the base of the trunk, as demonstrated by the anatomy and morphology of its fibers, thus increasing its biological durability. These findings highlight its potential as a structural material, craft resource, and bioenergy feedstock in dryland regions such as NTT.
