Abstract

This study was motivated by students' low self-confidence and English speaking skills, which were influenced by weak learning motivation and limited learning media that lacked variety. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers an innovative solution through interactive applications that can function as personal practice companions. Preliminary study results from interviews with students at MA Model Zainul Hasan show that 75% of students have below-average speaking skills, which is caused by a lack of confidence and limited time for practice. This study aims to determine the effect of using AI as a practice companion on improving students' confidence and English speaking skills. The method used is pre-experimental with a one group pre-test and post-test design, involving 84 students as samples. The research instruments are confidence questionnaires and speaking skill assessments. The results of the analysis using the paired sample t-test showed a significant increase after the intervention: the average confidence increased from 58.95 to 67.08 (p = 0.000), and speaking skills increased from 55.67 to 66.17 (p = 0.000). These findings prove that the use of AI can significantly improve students' self-confidence and speaking skills. This study contributes to the use of technology in English language learning, particularly in developing students' speaking skills and self-confidence. Abstract

The integration of technology in foreign language learning has become essential in higher education. However, students often rely on online translation tools without proper verification, resulting in inaccurate language production. This community service program aimed to enhance students’ understanding and skills in utilizing online translation tools as Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) at Universitas Hafshawaty Zainul Hasan (UNHASA). The program employed preparation, implementation through interactive training, and evaluation stages. Conducted on June 17, 2025, the activity involved 27 students from various study programs. The results indicated improved conceptual understanding of translation tools, enhanced English writing skills, and increased learner autonomy and confidence. Evaluation results revealed that 92% of participants found the program highly beneficial and 88% intended to apply the acquired knowledge in their learning activities. This program contributes to strengthening students’ digital literacy and serves as a sustainable model for technology integration in language learning.

Abstract

English proficiency is recognised as one of the academic strengths promoted at Madrasah Aliyah Model Zainul Hasan; however, the overall competence of students remains relatively low. Several factors contribute to this condition, including limited environmental support, insufficient opportunities for practice, challenges in pronunciation and grammar, and low learner confidence. To address these issues, a community service programme was designed to introduce students to the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its pedagogical potential in English language learning. The programme consisted of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In the preparation stage, the team identified Grade XI students with low English proficiency based on information provided by the homeroom teacher and subsequently arranged a targeted activity schedule. The implementation stage, conducted on 28 May 2025, involved delivering material on “The Use of AI in English Language Learning,” followed by practical sessions using Duolingo and Grammarly. Students explored key features of both applications and completed exercises related to grammar, pronunciation, and sentence construction. The session lasted for two hours. During the evaluation stage, the team documented challenges encountered and collected feedback from school partners to refine future activities. Overall, the programme enhanced students’ understanding of AI-based learning tools and increased their motivation to engage in independent English practice. The accessibility and interactive nature of Duolingo and Grammarly contributed to students’ improved confidence and willingness to utilise AI applications in their learning process .
