Abstract

This study aims to examine how different genders are represented in Indonesia's grade eight English textbooks. The primary goal of this research is to ascertain the various gender representations and how language and images are used in the English textbook "Think Globally Act Locally." The study employs Fairclough's (1989) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) frameworks, specifically the description, interpretation, and explanation. Analyses are divided into five categories: Authors' genders, character genders, issues centered on men or women pictures and visibility, and linguistic traits. Additionally, the images have been subjected to a critical image analysis using the Critical Image Analysis program. The investigation's findings reveal that gender prejudice or stereotypes persist in the English textbooks used in Indonesian schools, despite the government's efforts to promote equality and fairness in education through the country's educational policy. Lastly, the study offers some pedagogical implications and recommendations for resolving gender inequality in the educational materials used in English classrooms.

Abstract

Students often do not understand or know the meaning of foreign language vocabulary, especially English. Usually, they only learn English vocabulary from the material the teacher taught them. Therefore, this study explores another teaching strategy, the vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS). This study employs qualitative research and descriptive case studies. The study involved with 33 participants. However, of the 33 volunteers recruited, 6 were recruited for interviews. Use thematic analysis as well as data analysis techniques. The results show that VSS serves learning activities that make students self-directed learners, encouraging them to learn new vocabulary with enthusiasm. On the other hand, student collaboration in learning becomes a challenge because it requires collaboration. In conclusion, VSS is a potential instructional strategy to support and equip students to learn vocabulary correctly.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis analyzes the cultural content within the English textbook “Pathway to English” designed for 10th-grade high school students, published by Erlangga in 2022. Employing a qualitative descriptive study approach, this research centers on the textbook materials, excluding exercise items. Data comprising text and images are categorized according to Cortazzi & Jin’s (1999) cultural categories and Moran’s (2001) cultural dimensions. The results of the analysis reveal that the Target Culture category and the “persons” dimension predominantly feature in the acquired data. These findings indicate the necessity for teachers to develop supplementary materials to cater to students’ needs in comprehending diverse cultures within the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). As a result, students can be exposed to a more comprehensive and profound learning experience, potentially enhancing their understanding of global cultural diversity.
