Abstract

Selama pandemi COVID-19, semua kegiatan dilakukan “dari rumah”, misalnya bekerja, belajar, dll. Oleh karena itu, pemerintah Indonesia menerapkan sistem Distance Learning (DL). Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali persepsi guru bahasa Inggris mengenai proses pembelajaran yang mereka lakukan selama pembelajaran jarak jauh. Penelitian ini melibatkan dua orang partisipan. Partisipan merupakan guru bahasa Inggris di SMA di daerah pedesaan Karawang, Jawa Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain naratif (Clandinin & Huber, 2010) karena berfokus pada sudut pandang partisipan terkait topik. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara semi-struktur melalui Google Meet dan wawancara tatap muka. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa WhatsApp dapat mendukung pembelajaran online. Peserta menyatakan bahwa materi yang disampaikan dapat dipahami oleh siswa, dan mereka nyaman karena WhatApp sangat mudah dan terjangkau. WhatsApp juga mendukung pendidikan karakter siswa yang dapat membuat mereka bertanggung jawab, percaya diri, dan mandiri. Siswa dapat mengemukakan pendapat mereka sendiri melalui pertemuan virtual untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara mereka.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi pengadopsian serta penerimaan Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) dengan guru EFL dari salah sekolah menengah pertama di Indonesia sebagai partisipannya. Selain itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi guru EFL dalam memutuskan pengadopsian MALL serta mengetahui bagaimana cara mereka mengakomodasi faktor-faktor tersebut. Data penelitian didapatkan melalui wawancara semi terstruktur, lalu data tersebut dianalisis menggunakan teknik tematik analisis. Dari hasil analisis tersebut, hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa factor sekolah, seperti kolega, siswa, dan pelatihan guru merupakan faktor yang paling berpengaruh dalam pengadopsian MALL. Selain itu, faktor internal seperti effort expectancy juga turut andil dalam pemilihan aplikasi mobile yang digunakan dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

In Indonesia, Participation in Teacher Professional Development activities depends on the availability of the programs and the rotation in school (Shinta Sari et al., 2020). A recent study has found some of the essential features of effective TPD are missing in Continuous Professonal Development (CPD) program. One of them was that The PKB program has not targeted teachers based on years of experience (Revina et al., 2020). Specifically, Among EFL teachers, there are only some engaging with TPD program are reported to have a positive impact on their professional lives (Cirocki & Farrell, 2019). Therefore, This qualitative research use narrative inquiry, aims to know more about the effective strategies of TPD among EFL teachers and how EFL teachers develop their TPD. The subject of the research was two EFL teacher who has been teaching English language for many years and has a lot of experience in teaching English language throughout their career. The findings from two participants indicates that for over more than 20 years of experience as an EFL teachers both participants realized how crucial Teacher Professional development to learned new knowledge and develop their professionalism from experiences throughout their entire career. By having benefits from developing extensive reading, attended some workshops and joining English community as subject focused learning related with English language teaching and the benefit of technology. Keywords:  Teachers Professional Development, EFL teachers, Narrative Inquiry

Abstract

Social networking apps have emerged as potentially useful new tools for improving second language vocabulary acquisition. The current research compares the growth of academic vocabulary knowledge in English. The purpose of this study is to compare the perspectives or views of the Department of English Education at Singaperbangsa Karawang University (UNSIKA). Online learning conducted during the Covid-19 Pandemic students using WhatsApp group media to traditional vocabulary instruction methods. The qualitative research method used in this study is a descriptive design with an explanation of the form of narrative related to the views of students in online learning during the pandemic. Data was collected through interviews specially semi structure interview based on interview guideline and data analysis by involving three students in the online learning process. The findings provide information about the learning process as well as the advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp media. The interview results show that students in general have a positive attitude toward learning vocabulary through WhatsApp group media. However, technological limitations, unfamiliar presentation, and learning activities may prevent students from participating in a WhatsApp media lesson.

Abstract

Currently, students are asked to be able to understand literacy in reading. However, to understand literacy, of course, it has to go through the right strategy especially to beginner reader students. The purpose of this study is to determine the strategy of students in reading English text through perspective from automatic information processing (AIP) in reading. The method for this study used interviews and observations of one participant conducted in the second-level high school. This study also uses descriptive case study as research design. This study shows 5 things that should be reviewed in reading English text, namely attention, decoding, comprehension, switching in reading and automaticity. However, the five things found in this study are still rarely noticed. Therefore, this study also aims to allow educators and students to know what steps to do as a strategy to be able to read and understand the text of reading in English especially for beginner reader.

Abstract

Speaking is one of four crucial skills in English language learning. The pupils communicate and share their thoughts by language in their everyday life. They use language to make an order, to communicate with others, to express their emotions, thoughts and ideas. Speaking is one of the subjects in an English Education Department, the researcher inspired to evaluate whether the debating method increase the student’s speaking skill or not, especially during the outbreak of the corona virus. As the impact of this virus matter, education is one of some fields got impacted, so schools and universities are closed for more than a year. The new way of teaching learning could be a challenge for both students and instructors. Moreover, there is a need to know on how the students’ perception toward the teaching learning process via video conference, was it feel the same. However, this paper investigates the EFL students’ perception of speaking courses through the debating process during the pandemic. This study employing qualitative narrative inquiry. The data gathered from some the experiences of three Indonesian EFL students in university. The author was done collected the data conducted a semi-structured interview using a call through messages application. The study found that the participants’ perceptions toward speaking course conducted via video conference encourage their critical thinking, their team-work, students’ social skill and their interest towards the subject. It seems that the debate technique is impacted the students positively by promoting their critical thinking, social skill, team work and students’ satisfaction towards the subject.

Abstract

In the context of teaching language, a suitable teaching approach in the classroom affects teaching reading to language learners to be successful. The extensive reading can be used as an alternative approach to teach reading which provides many advantages for language learners specially to foster their reading skills. Many researchers have been conducted the extensive reading study, however, the majority of existing studies about the solution to teach language using extensive reading does not appear to be helpful to find students’ preference from the component of extensive reading. Therefore, this present qualitative study attempts to explore students’ preferences in the component of extensive reading. The findings present that the highest students' preference from the component of extensive reading is easy reading. Meanwhile, the smallest students’ preference from the component of extensive reading is about teacher orientation & guide. A future researcher is suggested to study extensive reading in other aspects besides exploring students' preference to increase the quality of next extensive reading implication to be better.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know: 1.The effect of linguistic intelligence on English students’ speaking skill, 2. The effect of interpersonal communication competence on students’ English speaking skill, and 3. The effects of linguistic intelligence and interpersonal communication competence collaboratively on English students’ speaking skill. The method used in this research is quantitative. To collect the data of this research, writer uses interview and questionnaire. Interview is used for collecting the data of students’ speaking skill, and questionnaires are used to collect the data of linguistic intelligence and interpersonal competences. The participants of this research are 30 students, the English department students in the third semester at University of Singapebangsa Karawang, as the sample taken randomly from the number of students consisted of about 180 students. The result of the research showed that the effect of linguistic intelligence and interpersonal communication competence collaboratively toward students’ speaking skill with the regression Formula : ? = -2.448+0.607X1+0.379X2.  Keywords: Linguistic Intelligence, Interpersonal Communication Competence,                   Students’ English Speaking Skill.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify EFL teacher’s attitudes based on the 2013 curriculum assessment in the Senior High School. It is aim to give illustration to the teachers on how to do on the 2013 curriculum. This research used qualitative analysis and narrative inquiry as a research design, The reason is narrative inquiry is related to the theme of this research, where this study wants to find out how attitudes are related to the practice of a teacher when assessing students, so this is closely related to narrative inquiry which focuses someone to tell experiences that have occurred. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted to obtain information about the EFL teacher’s attitudes about the assessment. The results of this study there are three important findings, namely: teacher’s emotional response to the assessment based on 2013 curriculum including teacher feels enjoy, accused, challenged and confused, the teacher carries out the aspects in authentic assessment well, and teacher uses alternative tools to carry out learning.

Abstract

In this digital era the progress writing assessment changes rapidly to monitor and determine students writing has developed tools in order to assessing the students’ writing automatically to help the teacher. The tools called Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) which are more commonly known as computer-generated feedback. In other hand, Grammarly as one of developed AWE program is effective to help teachers in correcting EFL writing. Most previous study, however, are primarily concerned with students’ improvement and perceptions using Grammarly. While, limited study taking yet on Teachers’ perception on the effectiveness of Grammarly application as a tool of writing assessment. This research aimed at investigating teachers’ perception on the effectiveness of Grammarly application as a tool of writing assessment. This research used the qualitative approach with descriptive case study design. The subject of the research was three EFL teacher who has been teaching English language for many years and used grammarly as a tool for writing assessment.  The findings from three participants indicates that the teachers respond positive perception. Positive perception refers toward that grammarly had helped the teachers in assessing students’ writing assessment effectively and efficiently at gramamar, punctuation and spelling features based on principle assessment by (brown, 2004) that is practically, reliability, validity, authenticity and washback.
